  1. Growing up in the states, my family didn’t have a lot of money. The so-called American dream had never worked out for us. With no real education it was hard to find a job, and at age 23 I decided to move overseas to Europe to try my luck. I put together what little money I had, went on a train ride heading towards New York. There I found a work on a fishing boat working out of Tasiilaq – Greenland. It wasn’t a huge boat, there was the captain, and my boss Salik, and a Ukrainian called Oleksandr. It is worth knowing that Tasiilaq isn’t a big town, about 2000 residents, but it didn’t matter, most of the time we were out on the seas. And I loved it! For the first time in my life, I felt happy As years went on, it got harder. There were not as many fish as before, and money got harder to come by. In the end, Salik got very ill, and had to stop his business, that also men, letting me and Oleksandr go. With money in our pockets but no job, Oleksandr suggested we moved to his hometown of Sevastopol. He had family there, and we had the opportunity to start over. As luck would have it, we had enough money to buy our own small fishing boat. And just work the two of us out of the Black sea, catching Horse Mackerel. Time went on, and life was good. The only thing I regret, was that I never married and fathered children. But when I had the age to do so, is was no place in my life where I could do so. But all considered, I felt my life were where it should be. One morning I woke to the sound of Oleksandr knocking on my door! Somethings going on in Chernarus. It was unclear to me what was going on in the beginning, as the news report didn’t tell us a lot. Later that afternoon Oleksandr had come into contact, with a relative living in Sochi. That evening he didn’t say much. I don’t know if he knew anything, and I was too afraid to ask, as I thought I would not like the answer. I woke up the next day and the apartment was so quiet. It was odd, as Oleksandr always were up before me. I went into the living room and kitchen, but he was not there. I knocked on this door, but no answer. I went into his room which I found empty as well. I found a note on his desk “My dear friend John I’m sorry to leave like this, but the things I heard from Sochi yesterday have made me realize that I have to go help out the best I can. Things in Chernarus is bad. I’m gonna pick up my great cousin Andrii, and we will try to help people out of there I’ve taken the boat, but hope to see it return back to dock safe someday” As days went by, the reports started coming in got worse. People started to hoarding food from the supermarkets, like this would be the end of the world. Although I didn’t know, that it actually was the end of the world, I decided that I would not sit by, while the things were going to shit in Chernarus, if Oleksandr left to help out, so should I! And I couldn’t stop thinking, that if had I asked him that evening, would he had told me, and ask me to come with him. I now felt like I had led my only real friend down. I needed to go help him and Andrii If I couldn’t find them, I could always go home I thought. So I went out from Sevastopol, traveling over Crimea, and a few hours later I was in Kerch ready to travel through Russia. But the border guard would not let me through. I was not the only one there trying to get to Russia, there must have been a few thousand people. “Due to the situation down south, we can not let you through”. That was the “official” statement we got told. And we were asked to go back to our homes As night was falling upon Kerch, I went to the docks to watch some of the ships. The next train home was due to 02:00 AM, so I had some time to kill. There I met a wired looking man. He sat on deck of a boat just gazing out in the air. I sat down and we started to talk. He was from Novigrad, and as he was telling me about what he had seen I only now started to understand what was really going on in Chernarus. It was now clear more than ever. I needed to find Oleksandr! As morning struck my chin, I found my self still being on the man’s boat. He was nowhere to be found on it, I didn’t even get his name. without thinking twice, I saw this as my opportunity to get to Chernarus. So, I set sails heading towards the coast of Chernarus. About 10 hours later, I received a radio transmission from the coast guard, that I could not go any further. Not that I didn’t expect this, as I knew what was going on in Chernarus, of course there would be something trying to keep everyone out from there. I lay at bay near Poti – Georgia. There I traded the boat for a car and some money to a family that was leaving, the mainland in search for a safer place on the coast of Bulgaria. Now I took a 400 km drive north, northwest. I saw very few people on that trip. It was almost like people had vanished. About 100km from the boarder to Chernarus were a checkpoint setup by NATO. I turned off my headlights and parked about 700-1000m away and waited for the dark to come crawling ind. As night fell upon the landscape, I took my backpack and went into the wood, there I crossed the checkpoint and headed for the Black Mountains. And that was where I was it… the first infected that I came face to face with. The growling sound that came out of it send shivers down my spine. I took a hold on my old fish knife and stood still. Then it saw me. With a howl like scream it charged me. I was to slow to react and it rammed into me. Laying on my back with that thing on top of me. I managed to get a grip on its neck with my left hand and drill my knife into its head. It fell down on me, lifeless… dead… Luckily for me I next infected I came across were not before entering Chernarus, and many after that making my way down south in hope of finding Oleksandr and Andrii. Now im here, in Chernarus, trying to find my friend, and I’m not gonna stop until I know where he is, or what happened to him
