    Too many crazies (?)

    Take Walking Dead for example, both the comic and the show, which is extremely well written all around. Now think of all the traits that make the vast majority of the characters who are successful at surviving the collapse of human civilization exactly that - successful. Insanity is never one of them. Prudence, aggression, resourcefulness, strength and all that good stuff? Sure. Babbling like lunatics to imaginary friends or chewing off their own feet? Not so much.

    Interesting. Did not know zombies could swim and/or fly aircraft. Off topic, but.. By 2015-03-15 the United States government has fallen, China started nuking their own country, and every where else is a wasteland full of undead with small pockets of survivors. By the way, the U.K. began taking in refugees to the point they were flooding the country, it could be assumed that everyone else began as well, and that's how the infection spread, and we don't even know if this virus is airborne, it very well could be. There are many ways the infection could have reached these locations. And I believe after 2015-03-15, the only place completely infection free was Greenland (or perhaps it was Iceland), because they completely isolated themselves and were blowing up refugee boats as they approached the island. Russia actually pulled their forces from the border rather quickly seeing as pockets of infected were popping up in areas of their country. Greenland knew what was coming and needed to protect their vital supply of fermented shark treats. Hákarl I think? Anyway, I should bewn up on my lores. Still, yeah, crazy probably wouldn't last long. At least not this long.

    I kinda wish DayZRP had gone with an Altis Life or Takistan Life server for ARMA 3. There is so much potential depth to the RP in those mods.

    There is nothing in the lore which states that the quarantine has failed worldwide. As far as the lore we're working with is concerned, there is some question as to how effective the quaratine has been, but there is nothing to suggest that the infection has spread beyond Chernarus and the surrounding area, including Takistan and possibly several other states. If I'm not mistaken, the Russians to the north are still holding the line. And I think what the OP is getting at is that crazy people wouldn't last long in this sort of collapse. If you've lost your mind, yes, it's entirely possible, but you don't make for a very convincing "survivalist". Surviving for years in this environment really would require a semblance of sanity, planning and personal control. At least, that's what I got from it. The crazies would be long dead, probably form craziness-related craziness.
  6. And I would argue that there is no such thing as "tasteful racism". Oddly enough, when I see people defend racism in role playing environments, it's almost universally because it's linked to an inherent desire to keep things from becoming too restricted in terms of what we can and can't do with our own characters. Which is ridiculous. On DayZRP we can't kill anyone without meeting certain criteria, we can't steal someone's vehicle without encountering and interacting with them first, we have to ask permission to force feed, scar, torture and/or execute someone, and so on. The entire system is built on rules that ensure that everyone involved gets something out of it. As such, there are a billion ways to be hostile without resorting to blatant racism. The problem is that in order to unlock those billion ways, you have to be creative. Innuendo. Reference. Applied context. And on and on. In this case, the OP enjoyed the experience. That's fine. In fact, that's great. It still isn't something DayZRP should ever interpret as acceptable as far as a violation of the community's principles go. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed a TON of RP here, and none of it involved anyone spouting off about "kebab eaters" or otherwise using any terminology that relates directly to real world racial tensions.

    Gear RP? Should I be mad?

    "Gear" is one thing. "Food and water" is another. I was under the impression that survivors of robberies and whatnot need to be left with these essentials upon request so as to provide for a "reasonable chance of survival". If that has changed and victims can now be left with absolutely nothing, that's something I'd like to know about for sure. We always, always, always used to leave people with a can of whatever when they were released.
  9. Like you, I'm invested in the characters that I create. However, I have willingly let them die off when the circumstances call for it. My first character, Jiri Janik, died when the old "Refinery" (mod era DayZRP) was overrun during a special server event. He was accidentally shot when he wandered out into the fray, and it seemed fitting for him to die there on the very same railway tracks he had spent his life travelling down. As for my new character, I think things would be very much the same. When he dies from, let's say, falling or a glitch or something not entirely heroic, he will wake up in a daze and his "death" will be explained by something similar to a loss of consciousness or near death resulting in severe memory loss. However, if he is involved in something wonderful as far as RP is concerned and loses his life because of it, I'm all for that. And I'll start all over again with someone fresh.

  12. Hello DayZRP! I doubt anyone playing right now remembers me, but I just resubmitted my WL application and I'm hoping to get back into the action ASAP. I found myself missing the DayZRP atmosphere, despite my overall diminishing interest in DayZ itself. I'm actually quite keen on meeting some of the newer community members, so keep a look out for me if I'm given the thumbs-up to return. I'm all about living out in the wild you know, so in case you were wondering, yes, that's me over in those trees fiddling with my campfire and trying to get the worm to stay on the stupid rusty hook that took me forever to find and now... What the Hell... Where did it go now? I know it's around here somewhere...

  14. First off, it doesn't surprise me that Lue is waiting for a fix. He was waiting for a fix back when I left, so that makes perfect sense. We ended up playing a lot of Rising Sotrm with Zodiac and White Dynamite while we were waiting for Rocket to do his thing. As for Animal and Joe being active, that's fantastic. Good to hear. I was Jiri Janik the drunken Czech hobo back in the day when I was with Lost & Found. We did a lot of stuff with the Watchers back then. Even after a few sour encounters, we made it work. Then I bugged off.
  15. Thanks, Carib and Luna. I appreciate the welcome. I'm guessing that a lot of my old pals are probably gone, as that's how it generally goes, particularly after almost 2 years. Rampage (Papa) is still around I see, and has made his way all the way up to Admin no less! Also, Terra. But maybe some people here know if some of the other guys like Lue, Animal, Archer, Zebb Ryans and Sweet Joe are still kicking around in either the mod or the Standalone shard? Anyone? Yes? No? Graham crackers?
  16. Hello DayZRP! Press here. Was out of commission for quite a while as my wife had twins (TWINS, BASIL!) some 5 months ago and there was, well, absolutely zero time for fun and games. However, my lovely lady has been ever so impressed with the way Press here has stepped up and dived into fatherhood that she has decided to cut old daddy-o some slack to play some video games at night! Far Cry 4 and some other titles were on my "To Play" list, but so was DayZRP, because although Standalone has become bearable (barely), nothing really beats this community. For those of you who don't know me, I started off with the Free Medics, joined the awesome guys over at Lost and Found for a while, and finally ended up trying to get something going with the FM Defense Squad people before the wee ones came along and threw a couple of tiny monkey wrenches into the machine. I have no clue who's still here and whether or not there's anything in particular I want to do once I get everything up and running, but yeah, I should be around. For good times. And such. So, hello everyone! Again. Looking forward to running into (or away from) you.

I was just wondering if the lot had some kind of long-term enclosed parking feature, but something like that would likely require the sort of structures with locks you can only put up in Epoch. Quick question about this - If a player parks a vehicle of any kind at the trade post, obviously stealing it isn't above board as the rules clearly state that you can't steal people's possessions when you're there. I just haven't been to the TP yet, but I was planning on going either tonight or this weekend, and I wanted to know if you park something there... can you leave it there when you log out? Is the vehicle considered to be "safe" once it's parked at the TP, or once we log out are those vehicles considered to be "abandoned" and therefore free game for other players?

So far it's been a bit of a hassle micromanaging Saif's inventory in order to keep enough fresh food and water on him at all times (8 blocked slots), but it can be done, particularly since he doesn't have a lot of other stuff he needs to be hauling around. My biggest issue now is finding a way to be useful. Allow me to explain what I mean by that. I always feel like "surviving" isn't really enough to keep DayZ interesting. Hell, all we really need is food and drink, and if all you wanted to do was make it as long as possible, you can do that by staying in remote areas all by your lonesome, but that's not why we're here, right? We're here for the interaction. And since I like to develop characters over time, I like them to have a "thing" that they have to focus on; doctors look for injured survivors or go "on call" like the Free Medics used to do, military clans work together to move on objectives, bandits are looking for people to rob, and so on. With a guy like Saif, it's hard to find that purpose, so I'm considering some alternatives that require a bit of character tweaking to make him more interesting by allowing him to have more structured adventures. Some of the things I've considered include converting him into a soldier of fortune who will work for other survivors in exchange for something tangible like sandbags, tents, vehicles, weapons and ammunition, or perhaps he's more of a travelling merchant who peddles some of the more difficult items to find such as stash supplies or vehicle parts. I'm also working on bringing back one of my other old characters who worked in the settlements as a mechanic, so maybe I'll keep that job for him. Either way, I'll work something out.   20. ال صُوفِيّ ("The Sufi", A Character Outline for Saif al-Mansur) "How can you defeat an enemy who looks into the barrel of your gun and sees paradise?" Preamble I recently decided to return to DayZRP after an extended break in order to kick back and have a little fun, but I had no desire whatsoever to resurrect my old character, the drunken Czech hobo Jiri Janik. My clan, Lost and Found, have (for the most part) moved on from DayZRP, and I decided it would be best to cook up something fresh and start again. So I came up with the idea for Saif al-Mansur, outlined below, and before I started working on a proper RP series for him (using a combination of sound files, writing and video), I wanted to put together this post and share it with the other roleplayers here in order to get some feedback and perhaps some new ideas that I can integrate into the character, personality or otherwise. I appreciate you guys taking the time to read this, and I look forward to being back in action over the next few weeks. Background For this man, who sees life as a constant struggle between the righteous and the sinful, the pauper and the noble, the chosen and the irredeemable, the cataclysm that has befallen the world makes perfect sense. The lines that once separated right from wrong have grown thicker in his eyes and have become easier to identify, and the spiritual demons with whom he had been engaged in constant mental warfare since he was a child suddenly materialized in the form of mindless, shambling corpses bent on slaughter. Hollow vessels, as it were, into which El Shaddai could pour his wrath, his vengeance, and enduring and insurmountable purpose; to cleanse the world of the fickle faithful and the hopeless faithless. Saif al-Mansur, whose name means "Sword of Mansur" after the early modern Islamic revolutionary Mujahideen Al-Imam al-Mansur al-Mutawakil 'ala Allah, is a wandering warrior-philosopher from North Africa who joined up with Takistani rebel fighters over a decade ago. He is a strict adherent of the mystical branch of Islamic faith known as Sufism, and views the "outbreak" that has rocked humanity and reduced it to a collective of vagabond survivors as a test God expects the pure and devout to pass by navigating their way through a new earthly paradigm rife with disease, terror, and morally bankrupt people designated as obstacles to be overcome. To this end, Saif regards bandits and militaristic ideologues as enemies of God, and heroic survivors as God's tools of reconstruction. Although he still identifies himself as Mujahideen, an Islamic warrior, he no longer believes that Islam is the only path to God. Rather, he has come to the conclusion that other religions and perennial philosophies of existence that supersede religion are indeed "good", provided that they also encourage people to be "good" by performing great deeds which further the cause of humanity as a whole. Characteristics Saif abstains from eating canned foods and drinking soda unless the circumstances are dire (he is literally about to die of hunger or thirst). Instead, he hunts and fishes for halal meat (no pork) and drinks only water and tea. When he finds a can of iced tea, he gets very excited. It's like a little gift from God just for him. He covers most of his face and rarely speaks, and when he does he chooses his words very carefully. For the most part, he communicates through elaborate emotes that explain exactly what he is thinking or what he is doing. Saif has little or no interest in weapons other than powerful rifles that allow him to hunt and survive more effectively, although he is not opposed to using silenced weapons of all kinds if he happens to come across them or is able to trade something for them. Years of fighting against Russians and his homeland's government forces high in the mountains have also made him accustomed to all known variations of the Kalashnikov and different types of explosives, although he does not particularly enjoy carrying them. He abstains from using LMGs and SMGs as he believes them to be devilish and soulless in both design and application due to their rates of fire. If you were to encounter Saif on the road, his first impulse would be to trade with you if you appear to be amiable, but he is never particularly keen on travelling with others. When he wants to be around others, he heads to locations where he knows survivors gather together (settlements and trading posts). He would certainly rather die with his gun clutched tightly in his hands than part with his meager belongings, therefore he makes a poor potential target for bandits. However, given the right set of circumstances, he would certainly play along with a quality robbery or abduction. He is always willing to provide medical attention to wounded survivors, but he isn't a particularly skilled medical practitioner, and he prefers to treat his own injuries with simple bandages and holistic healing methods (consuming fresh food). For Saif, drugs are never the best solution to a medical problem, the fact that most narcotics are manufactured in the west notwithstanding. As far as mercantilism, Saif really is a bartering man at heart. He brings food, water, medical supplies and special weapons to the table, as well as survival supplies such as tents, compasses, maps, tools and sandbags. Whenever he finds vehicle parts, he generally leaves them for more mechanically-inclined survivors to discover and do something with. His preferred methods for getting around are by foot and by bicycle (by far his favorite).

  24. Yeah Alfie... can you figure out why people are a bit shocked at how awful the $20 Standalone is... after a year and a half of development... and we're still in "early alpha"? "Early alpha" has become the universal excuse for "We didn't do what we planned to, but we need money, so take this thing that sucks worse than what you have, pay us for it, and we'll finish it..." Soon™ April of 2012 was when the Standalone process was announced. I have no clue why people are so forgiving of the awful state the Standalone is in. None whatsoever. Maybe just pure fanboyism. Take that as an insult if you want. It isn't.
