As someone who grew up in a small town this is 100% true. It's so easy to tell the people who didn't grow up in a small town.

Where I'm from the main drug is meth. We don't have cows though. Just trees... a whole fuck ton of trees. Oh and snow.

I spent a huge chunk of my childhood in a tiny little shithole town filled with racists and way too many churches for its population. Weed was the drug of choice there so I guess I got lucky with that one but dear god I hated that place with a passion that will never end. I was so happy to get out of that place. And now when i have to go through the town to get somewhere people always say how cute it is and its like "No I lived here its not cute its the seventh level of hell."

Yeah that was my life. It got nowhere near as bad the moment I went to uni about 30 minutes away with a population of 20K. Moving to the east coast in 13 days to a town with a population of ~ 100. This will be fun.

You have my sympathy, Also is it not a huge culture shock when you escape that small town? Like I went from that tiny town to one about 5 times the size and it was so damn weird for me that we didn't have to drive an hour to get to a damn Walmart because there are two in the city I live in now let alone to any actually good shops.

It wasn't too bad because of how close the larger "city" was. The thing about the Upper Peninsula is there are towns clumped semi close together then a WHOLE lot of nothing for awhile until you reach the next clump of towns. So because of this I got used to the town. Then I ended up staying about two days a week there, then I moved. Now Delaware is going to be a whole different story. I'm moving to Amish land.

Oh you were one of the lucky ones then, for us there was nothing good within almost a hour and a half of the town I grew up in.  Aside from horses, so that was the one perk I got was learning how to ride a horse as a kid.

      I would have loved that!

Though I wouldn't count -30 F temp winters as lucky. Being in the larger town was nice though. It is right on Lake Superior. If I open the door leaving my building and look left, I can see it in the distance. To be fair though, there wasn't much good in the larger town except a walmart until a few years ago. The economy went full fail mode when the SAC base got shut down in the 90s. Recently its going fail mode because the mines are starting to close. Thats another "Perk" of small town life. A horrible economy.

Joules you are talking to someone who lives right on lake Ontario :P -40 Celsius or worse in the winter is almost expected here trust me I know ALL about that one, there was one winter where my dad and I were litteraly frozen inside our house because it got so cold and we had to call the fire department to get us out.

Strange it gets that cold off of lake Ontario. Goes to show I have no idea how climate works. lol

Almost died a few times when heat went out and it was down that low. Thank god for the existence of cars! lol

People used to drive from my current town to a little island people live on across the ice in the winter, that stopped after the ice got too thin and some peoples cars broke through. It still gets painfully cold in the winter though. Like I live in a place where it hurts to breath and I dont know why I still willingly live here lol

We must be crazy to live in places like this. It's quite funny, people keep saying I'll miss this place. Nah. I'll only miss the lake, but I'm trading a lake for the Atlantic ocean so... thats an upgrade. Yeah you should probably like... not live there anymore? I'm told its easy to leave and impossible to come back. Hopefully thats true, because I have no intention of coming back. Place is like a black hole sucking all the joy out of your life.
