Loot over RP, Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So I'm just killing time around that abandoned settlement located in Kabanino, minding my own business when I encounter this guy crawling around town, I go up to him talking and what not, and all that he seems to do or care about is crawl and look around while not responding to any of my questions, which seemed quite sketchy at first. Eventually, he said something about waiting for his friends or so and out of nowhere people start swarming the town, appearing from every single hole located in the wooden walls. They start asking me for things like my gun, jacket, maybe if I'm a trader or so and well, to all of these questions I answer with a clear no. Anyway, I end up giving my jacket away since I had about 6 to 8 people around me with guns and just when I think they're going away, somebody yells from outside the house that I had just relocated myself in ''Everybody in the compound put your hands up'' To which I thought that maybe a rival group to the one that was just with me is attempting to initiate on them from outside the compound (Kabanino is surrounded by walls from that old player made town called tombstone). I walk out with my gun out, yet lowered, asking the guys that were just with me about what's going on since I thought that they were pretty much done with me, and the second I turn around, one of these guys runs up to me from the corner, firing immediately, of course, no questions or answers given.

Throughout this entire encounter little to no roleplay was given and all that they seemed to care was, well, my loot. Anyway, for the first part I'm not entirely sure if this is report material really or if situations like this happen often in the server nowadays so yeah, I'm posting this here because I would like to know what you guys think about these types of situations or the loot over RP problem that has been going on according to other community members. I would post a video about it but I was sadly not recording at the time of the incident, anyway let me know what you think or if things like this have happened to you before.

Its a looting game with shooter elements what kind of people does this kind of game draw?

If you feel wronged make a report

If you feel like there was a lack of roleplay, a prioritizing of gear over roleplay, or an invalid kill, file a report in the Support section.  It may not go quickly because you don't have video evidence, but it'll still go through the process and as long as you aren't filing it with malicious intent or knowing no rules were broken, you are definitely within your rights to file a report.

Sorry you had a shitty roleplay situation though, if it is as reads, hopefully you'll gear up quickly again and jump right back into the roleplay.

3.3 You may not focus on out of character gains to the detriment of RP. For example, "rule play" is prioritizing things like kill rights or OOC information above more appropriate IC actions or behavior. Always prioritize role play over rule play.

Well, there is that and the fact that I didn't really understand who was initiation on who, now I don't believe that a report like this without video evidence would be taken that seriously and there's also the chance of having it to be classified into an invalid report. I do feel just a little confused since its the first time that an encounter like this has happened to me with this kind of behavior from the secondary party, development, and outcome. Kinda wanted to know how other people felt about it or if similar situations happen daily.

I would but I wouldn't like to have it classified as an invalid report and get a two-day ban, know what I mean? - Like I said, this is a first to me.

I hate that this is a mindset that even needs to be had now, but that's a whole different discussion.

Sit on the situation for a little bit.  Make sure you have the server time noted down for future reference, then sleep on it.  Give it a few hours, give it a day.  Then, think back on the situation and ask yourself, "Do I still feel shorted by this situation? Am I bothered enough by it to create a report?"  If the answer is yes, do it.  Reporting something that you genuinely, after time and thought, feel is a rulebreak should never result in a false report verdict, lest we get more people scared of filing a report, even if they have legitimate grounds to.

Good luck man 🙂

Your probably right, without a video this might be a tough report to get anywhere with.

I wouldn't worry about a false report, (hopefully, strange things do happen) for the most part if the report isn't malicious or  spiteful, you should be ok.

In cases where the evidence isn't there staff would just close it, and most times if it isn't a rule break they'll let you know and close (most...times)

I mean... If the initiation was "everybody inside the compound, hands up" and you're inside the compound, I reckon anyone would be able to tell you that the initiation was meant for you too. The moment you kept your gun out and walked outside, you became non-compliant, and fair game to the initiators. In my eyes the only rule break someone might argue happened in the situation, is you not complying to  6-8 people thus NVFL'ing.

Next time I'd suggest complying, because that's the only way to get RP out of an initiation.

As Mak said if there was an initiation, even not directly towards you, walking out with your gun out is not always the smartest idea

+1

Always put your weapon away if you're close to a robbery initiation but don't hear it, I get that people want to be able to shoot back in case they start taking shots, even though theres a few that are quick to shoot on here, nobody will fire on someone with a weapon on their back (I hope).

Unfortunately a lot of new players only join this community so that they are excempt from being shot on site while they do their merry little thing of hording as much military grade gear as possible and hoping they'll never come across another player who wants to rp with them.

I don't actually remember the last time I've properly looted. I usually spawn my clothes in from the item shop and I get my food from either my group friends or from killing infected. I don't really ever search houses for anything really. I just find that boring. I look for people to RP with instead.

Looting is part of the game

If there is a initiation just comply to get rp

As with a lot of new roleplayers, their mindset for DayZ is still about gear and loot, whilst giving some RP in order to get that.

It's a shame, but with time everyone learns.

I also completely agree with what @Peril said further up the thread.

Reading this over quickly you state plenty of times that you received no roleplay. If you talk to the people (if you manage to get their names) and help then with constructive critism that should be best. But if you feel like a rule has been broken, you’re more than welcome to report them.

Even though this is a shooter looting game, we have this as a roleplay server too and it should be served.

Roleplay > gear.

I only really loot hard if I need a certain "Look" for my character. For example Milo is a reporter so I always make sure to get him a press vest and something that makes him look really snazzy like maybe a coat or something. To me loot should serve to bolster the RP experience not hinder it.

As long as I get my purple stuff and matching outfit on, I don't really care what guns I'm carrying. I can Rp perfectly fine with just a tire-iron in my hand.

But I think the issue sometimes is that base-level of trust that remains from the DayZ basegame and mods.
I totally get it, that nervous  A & D spam, to make yourself a moving target, that heartbeat rising up, wondering if the person will shoot you or not.

I mean after getting screwed on Arma 2 multiple times back in the day, I always shot first before asking questions through my arma 3 and DayZ SA regular server stint. So I still get my heart rate elevated when I meet -anyone- even on this RP server xD   It's just muscle memory.   So I can totally understand if some people have an advanced version of that still stuck in their system and can't quite cope to the atmosphere of "letting go" and just rp'ing out the consequences of the situation instead of going for an upper hand to make yourself feel safe.

Bottom line.   Don't be afraid to give out RP, don't be afraid to lose gear even as a consequence of choosing to RP >  Winning. This server has rules, so if you spot someone doing gearplay > roleplay.  Or just give bad rp as a excuse for stealing all your gear, report it.  Learn to let goooooo~

I have found there is much RP to be had when you have a lot of loot.

I get talked to a lot and traded with when I carry my Field pack on my back and one in my hands. I have yet to get robbed, and I've even had people volunteer to escort me to settlements for trade.

This one guy wanted my scar and I gave it to him after I gave him a flare and told him it was a "vape." It was probably the best thing ever.

Gear is good for roleplay. The one time I did get robbed was because of gear, in fact, my friend gave @N-Tox the weapon he used to rob us. I'm not too proud of it either.
