Hardcore, fully immersive, RP-centric survival group

The idea for Res Publica began as a personal, character experiment: have a character that only uses TS as an IC radio, that would permadeath upon dying, and that had a set flaw. This way, I would be forced to play DayZ as an even harsher survival game: I made a point not to use apple trees, so that I would physically have to search for canned food. The result was the greatest experience I’ve had in this game to date.

As I talked to members of our community, old and new, an idea began to take shape: something along the lines of Our Harbor, Cerna Liska, and Coldwater blended together into a True Neutral group dedicated to making the game more fun. In short, Res Publica isn’t just a group: it's a whole different way of playing DayZ.

When people ask how the Society For Classical Preservation was founded, the answer comes in the form of an Ernest Hemingway quote: “It happened very gradually, and then very suddenly.”

Alexander Riley was born in 1964 in Scotland. He served in the British Army during the Falklands War before studying ancient history at Harvard. After getting his degree and moving back to Scotland, he started working at Edinburgh University as a professor of Roman history. There, he met fellow professor Jack-William RockGram. The two took a liking to one another and there shared interest in roman history made them fast friends. The two taught alongside for years, and founded an extracurricular society for students interested in learning more.

As the society grew larger, its members became more radical. The group began to transform, under the guidance of Jack and Alexander, into a society furthering the reformation of a Roman style political system. The group took part in marches in Edinburgh, London, and Newcastle, and as the years progressed the group became more and more devoted towards their cause.

In 2012, the Society was kicked off campus (along with Alexander and Jack-William) for hosting a Roman-style orgy. The two professors were convicted of sleeping with students, and kicked off campus. To escape any actual prosecution, the Society’s core members moved to Chernarus. Alexander and Jack began teaching at Novigrad University, leaving the past behind.

When the Syrian Civil War broke out, members of the Society thought they take advantage of the chaos to further their plans. Under the guise of an “archeological dig” they surveyed the failed state as a possibility for there new nation. Circumstances did not favor them, however, and the group returned to Chernarus with large amounts of roman artifacts in tow, “defending” them from ISIL. In reality, these artifacts became the cornerstone of what was quickly transforming into political cult.

After the outbreak, the Society saw the opportunity they had missed in Syria. Banding together the group moved to the heart of the outbreak, seeking to establish there state among the rubble of old.

OOC

> Educate members about Roman history, traditions, lifestyle, and general awesomeness

> All members will have permadeath characters

> Strictly enforce realism and immersion through limited TS use, IG radios, etc, etc

> To destroy Shazzam's group. ;)

IC

> Build a library to preserve the lost arts, culture, and knowledge stored in books but forgotten after the outbreak.

> Actively recruit for the Society a core cadre of intellectuals in all fields of study, proficient in the liberal arts and STEM to form the cornerstone of our renaissance.

> Seek to educate the people of Chernarus of forgotten knowledge by hosting free-to-attend classes in everything from history to survival skills.

> Form a functional, egalitarian government encompassing the best of all Classical values, stemming from Plato's Republic and based along the lines of early Rome.

> Preserve all old world knowledge, especially history, but also technology, science, and medicine.

> Destroy those who would use our assembled knowledge to further regress the world into the new dark age.

This group is a heavy immersion-intensive role play group.

You will be required to make a new character upon your character's death in-game. However, due to the state of the game, and the state of the server, there are some conditions:

> Any death to natural causes (infected, sickness, dehydration, etc, etc) results in a permanent death.
> Any execution at the hands of captors results in a permanent death.
> Any death during offensive PVP (as in, you are on the initiating side) results in permanent death
> Any death during defensive PVP (being initiated on) is taken on a case to case basis due to the proliferation of mass-initiations recently.
> Any death due to a glitch or a rulebreak is temporary, e.g. standard DayZRP rules towards death apply.

Each character submitted for the group is required to have one major flaw. These flaws can vary from anything i.e you are unable to use an automatic rifle, you are unable to do anything medical to yourself and/or others. The flaw you submit with your character will be reviewed by the current members before we discuss the possibility of you joining the group.
A few more examples of flaws are as follows:

Spoiler

I'm happy with that. Never too many neutral survivor groups, I like the focus on internal RP and realism, including permadeath. If you stick to your policies and goals I bet this will be brilliant.

Recruitment into Res Publica comes in two stages: the IC phase and the OOC phase. IC must always come first - we will not discuss recruitment with you until you’ve approached us in-game, and been ICly accepted.

The OOC phase happens after/during the IC phase, where you will come into TS for an interview. I have a list of prepared questions, plus some randoms I’ll throw in your direction. I intend for Res Publica to have extremely strict recruitment standards, as to show our dedication towards high quality RP.

However, in order to meet the group’s minimum membership requirement, the IC phase will be waved for the first five members.

PM @Sylva for more details.

He will still cry. I shall see to it :trolle:

Lore is complete, and as such, I am ready for the infinite worthless bickering constructive criticism that DayZRP shall give.

This looks neato. If I was able to play DayZ I would probably join but me graphics card done broked.

I like to see this though honestly. I wish you luck and I hope it goes far. It's definitely one of many good steps that can be taken to improve RP for oneself and others.

Well, that’s the idea. Make the game harder hahaha. Make it play like an actual survival game again :)

You post a Hardcore Survival group.
7 hours later, a serial killer group, who will inevitably be hellbent on making your life miserable, is posted.
Talk about timing.

I really like the idea of this, but you may invariably get some people who disagree when you say their death should be permanent and leave the group because of the sheer amount of danger you lot are consistently gonna be in, as you alluded to. Saying that, may want to clarify how strict those permadeath rules you have are.

Other than that, yeah, like this idea, I just think you're gonna have a hard time because of it.

We're going to be extremely strict with them, at least for now. We'll see how it turns out in game.

As for mass or pointless initiations, we're just going to ignore the deaths; but if its legitimate hostile roleplay that furthers the lore of our group and its characters, than we'll accept the consequences. But as for the famous "You have a military weapon, 10 secs drop weps," like, fuck that shit.

Hello @Sylva, the graphics and overall layout of your thread are very nice. I like what you did with the hyperlinked member pictures. I also admire the intent of this group. However, there are a few issues that need to be addressed.

  • While your background is a nice personal narrative for Alex Riley it explains next to nothing about the creation of the group. Remember that group backgrounds should not be a back story for any one member. Also, where is Plato or any of his teachings present in your group lore? Considering you have goals and even the title about The Republic you would think it would be mentioned n the group lore. You need to explain why the group is using an ancient text as the foundation of their beliefs.
  • Your last two goals seem to contradict one another. You want to be isolationist, but you also want to establish a rp hotspot? I'm afraid you can't have both on this server. Along the same lines, goals 2 and 5 seem very similar. Is your home to become the hotspot or are they to be separate? If they are to be the same then one of these goals should be cut.
  • Lastly, what exactly is your group? After perusing your thread it isn't very clear what your group wants to be. I understand what it wants to be on an OOC level, but IC'ly, what is your groups identity? Your goals and group lore should reflect this.

If you have any questions or need help, let me know. Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate the time you took in reading through everything and replying. I think its also safe to say your probably the only one besides myself who has actually read the lore :P

The narrative about Riley is supposed to show how the original three members of the group met, and why. I’m in the process of writing up identical lore posts for how each of the members of the group actually joined. The idea (and why I related the group to Coldwater) is that all the lore of the group is made in game. But of course, you need something to start with: which is why I included the bit about Riley.

You are right, about the goals. I will change that after I post this. As for part two of that point, we haven’t decided yet.

Our group is simply a bunch of survivors banded together trying to survive. Yes, we want stability, yes, we want security: but as for how we actually achieve that, it’s to be decided in game. Some of the group says we should form our own independent government. Others say live under Anarchy’s influence or even the Socialists’. All of that is decided through role play. The TeamSpeak meetings that most groups have don’t happen in Res Publica. EVERYTHING is done and decided in game, and in-character.

But in terms of our “uniqueness” I think it’s a nonissue. As it says in part one of the lore, conflict is by no means inevetable. Groups are more alike than different - it just comes down to one town not being big enough for both.

As for our identity...it’s exactly that. Ragtag survivors that worry more about finding there next meal then adhering to some old world ideology.

I hope this answers your questions. I will be available on TS later today if you would like to talk more.

Cheers,

Sylva

I do have a question though, how is someone ICly supposed to find out about a group etc? Other than mindlessly wandering around hoping to run into someone from a group since the map is fairly large is there a way that someone can ICly find out about a group outside of in game mechanics?

Well, how would you find a group IRL? I don't like the concept of, oh, I magically know this groups radio frequency, and they've agreed to meet me, despite them not knowing who I am at all. Would you trust a stranger on the radio? Especially under Chernarus' present circumstances?

It really just goes to how realistic you play. But for us, realism (and thusly, immersion) is paramount.

That's also why one of our goals is set up a safe place for Res Publica to set up. If we are constantly at one place, RPing, people will associate us with that location, making it easier for potentials to find and join us.

Especially if that place is a RP hotspot *hint hint*

I LOVE the character flaw aspect of this! Why is this not used more commonly? Really interesting idea here.

Everything here looks dope if implemented properly, which is always the gamble when you start a group. Looks like everyones up for the task!

I just think you may want to focus on what you're going to bring to the table communtiy and server wise. How you'll really impact it, reigning in your ideas so they're less broad. Then when you got that refined, focusing on building up the characters so they know what they want to do in a sense. Or just use the goals your charcters have to fuel your affect towards the community.

Do not be afraid to hostile RP too! Internal is easier, trust me, but you can get away with hostile and not end up in a report weekly. Hostile rewarding for both parties and not with just loot... :P
(may be harder with the constraints but who knows I got some optimism left)

I hope to see you all ig sometime. Best of luck regardless. Looks promising. ;)
