Outbreak Start Date

Okay, so I am quickly posting this to clarify something with some people in this community.

Somehow, people seem to think it's been like 2 or even 3 years since Patient Zero.

As far as I am concerned, and correct me if I am wrong here, it's only been 1 year and 4 months since the outbreak started.

I played an ALT character with amnesia during my real character's break the past month and when I kept asking since how long this started to people, I often got 2-3 years as an answer. Now obviously, people seem to have forgotten the actual date and seem to think it's been much longer.

This is caused by the fact it started in 2014 and we're now 2016 (Looks like 2 years) but calculate OCT 2014 to FEB 2016. There's your answer.

Just want to make this post to refresh everyone that about the actual start date since some people seem to think this all started when DayZ was released, rather than the actual DayZRP Lore. The date is not based on Standalone release or for some, mod release hehe.

If you thought this, perhaps a short trip to the lore page will help refresh our minds about this lore :) I mean it's probably been a while and we forget things sometimes ;) I check in often for the same reasons.

I personally don't even play as knowing the actual date in game to be honest. I find that this route works well enough for me since the server runs at 6 times speed and often you can go through a few different day/night cycles in one session.

I think people get suspicious of the outbreak being so current to the world. At least a year ago for example - you could use some sort of cultural reference from that time and it would kill the tone of the RP - even though it's applicable.

Protip: If you don't know the timeline and somebody asks you how long - Answer with a vague euphemism!

This is indeed weird how some would think that. Well, good on you for helping them Roach. ;)

Thanks! I have ran into couple that had done the same thing. I mistakenly started my RP as it was just a month or so after the Outbreak, then during a lore recap realized my mistake. Required me to change my RP slightly.

What about a hilighted spot in the lore about the current time elapsed since the outbreak, or a question in the white-list application, to make sure new comers realize the time frame? I know the last paragraph in section 2 explains it to people, but some must forget or skim over it.

Regarding the Lore broadcasts, who came up with those? Specifically the two small nukes used. Slight shocked to see where I live mentioned like that. :)

They may be oblivious to the lore defined date, but it makes sense for characters to lose track of time and simply state X amount of years. I doubt that memorising how many years/months/weeks/days/minutes/seconds it has been is a priority in an apocalypse.

Yeah... but 3 years? I got that a lot haha There's a huge difference between 1 year and 4 months and 3 years.

Also a lot of people do Birthday RP and lots of things happen around dates, well at least for me and some I know anyways hehe ;)

Thanks for the clear up. :)

Well you could also justify this simply: It's hard to keep track of time / dates without modern technology.

I know that personally my character doesn't carry around a calendar and tick off the days.

But that's just finding excuses I guess.

Cant speak from experience, but I doubt it. Unless you are keeping track of time, I think it would be very hard to know exactly how long it would have been. Best personal example I can give is going out on new years. It was nearly two months ago, but feels like at least 5-6 months to me. Especially when you consider that people no longer have commitments or deadlines to make. Its not like they have work to get up early for in the mornings or anything to really do day to day. So the days will just blur together and people will lose track of time. All they will know is that it has been a long time, leading to people guessing how many years.

Good idea to clear this up now and again. Thanks Roach :)

Just a suggestion in relation to this but would it be possible to have a timer on the front page counting since the outbreak occurred?

E.g.

Time Since Outbreak:

Years/Months/Days/Hours/Minutes/Seconds

If the date of the outbreak happened after the release of DayZ couldn't someone technically RP someone that used to play DayZ?

Yeah... and get a nice old bad RP verdict very likely. :D

There's always counting the winters and summers, though. It's easy enough to estimate how much time has passed, at least enough to know that it hasn't been several years. :P

I didn't think about that. You're smart :D.

+1 to this.

I met someone a few weeks back who thought the infection had started two weeks ago.

started timer from 1st of February 2014.

... why from that date exactly? Am I not understanding something?

Nope. I know it starts at october 2014, but I dont know what day exactly so I went with the first. Feel free to edit the timer to suit the lore better.

I'm kinda hazy on the date as my character has no idea how long its been and doesnt care

my bad I used february lemme fix it
