Reyna Ashton

“Light and goodness are the same in the sense that, they always create a darker opposite. With less light, there is always more room for a shadow.”

Reyna awoke groggily from her beautiful dream world to the sound of a small girl screaming. She looked around her room starting from the door all the way to the opposite of her room, that being the window. For the most part, her room seemed to be empty and clear of any sort of danger - the only sound that could be heard was the rustling of the branches and wind pushing against her window. Reyna closed her eyes once again, preparing to drift off back into her awaited slumber, until she heard another piercing scream. She lifted her torso off of the bed with haste, leaning back on her arms, using them as support. Reyna could hear the young child begging and pleading for her life - matching that of her younger sister’s voice... Jessica, Reyna said to herself. The screaming was coming from her sister’s room, to the right of Reyna’s bedroom just at the end of the home’s short hallway.

Reyna could feel a deep, paining shiver being sent down her spine. She tried to lift herself off of the bed but proved to be absolutely powerless - her body felt paralyzed. She heard a few more screams coming from Jessica’s room, and would try yet again to push herself off of the bed, but it was to no avail. She thought to herself, This has to be a dream… this has to be a dream. I-I can’t move… This isn’t real, none of this is real - She closed her eyes quickly, squinting her eyelids together, before opening them again. She looked to the left of her bed; on her nightstand, lay her medication that seemed to be full, showing she hasn’t taken any in quite a while. Reyna took a deep breathe and quickly snatched the pill bottle and unscrewed the top. She heard yet another scream, and out of fright, she dropped the bottle with a fearful gasp - it fell on edge of her bed and rolled onto the ground; all of its contents being scattered all over the floor. She leaned down to grab one of the pills, and she noticed half of her metal baseball bat sticking out. Reyna narrowed her eyes for a moment, and in that instant, she made the decision to pick up the bat with her right hand and finally lift herself off of the bed with her left.

She slowly made her way to the door, being careful to walk as quietly as possible so that there were no creaks coming from the old, small home. Reyna gripped her bat in the middle with her right hand, slightly raising it in the air, ready to smash the face of any intruder. She slowly and gently turned the knob on her door with her left - The door slowly crept open with a few quiet creeks being heard. Her heart began to race, it felt as if it was about to pop out of her chest; her breathing deepened. The woman peered her head out of the doorway, carefully peering down the left of the hallway, and then looking to the right. She nodded to herself, reassuring that no danger was present in the hallway; she takes yet another deep breathe before moving to the right of her room, towards Jessica.

Reyna carefully gripped her bat with both hands, pulling it back slightly so that she would have plenty of momentum to strike - she walked slowly and cautiously. Once Reyna came into the realization that there had been silence for a while, she almost immediately heard yet another sharp, piercing scream of her ten year old sister. Adrenaline hit Reyna and she ran to the end of the hallway and opened the door with haste. She looked to the right corner of the room that was closest to the door, and there stood a large, dark figure man peering over a rotting, decayed female child that looked to be dead for weeks. With all of her force and rage, Reyna smashed the metal bat into the back of the dark figure's head; he fell to the left, laying on his side - seemingly unconscious. She could see tears that had been streaming down the man’s face before the blow. Reyna positioned herself so that her feet were directly behind the man. Before she could think, her eyes widened, she lifted up the bat above her head, and smashed the head of the dark figure like it was a piece of fruit; blood spurted onto her light colored sweat pants, and her favorite sweatshirt. She lifted up her bat yet again above her head and slammed into the man’s head once more, accompanied with a loud scream, before tossing her bat to the side and falling on her ass. Her arms rested together on her knees and her head lightly pressed up against her crossed arms.

Reyna took another deep breath before lifting up her head and looking at the dark figured man’s corpse. She peered over his dead body and noticed her sister’s necklace… Jessica’s... necklace. Her eyes widened once more as everything started to fall into place, fear and disgust slowly started to peer over Reyna’s face. She quickly looked over to the direction of where the decaying child’s body lay, and soon found that it was no longer there - She quickly lets out a loud gasp of despair; tears begin to stream down her face as if her eyes were made of water themselves. In shock, she looks back down towards the dark figure’s body as it slowly takes the form of her father. No… No… No... NOOO! - Her breathing starts to become more shaky and violent as she is overcome with despair. Reyna quickly moves the necklace to the side, confirming if her father’s birthmark that is normally on his chest is on this man’s body, which was originally covered up by the necklace. Once she spots the birthmark her eyes widen once more and her head slowly starts to nod in realization of what she had just done. I’m so sorry… I’m so sorry Daddy… I’m so sorry. Reyna quickly looks behind her as she hears a creaky step. What have you done Reyna, what have you fucking done! - Her mother, Heather, screamed to her, with her right hand behind her back. He’s her mother chokes on her words for a moment, he’s dead. You… You killed him! Reyna looks back at her father’s corpse, and she quickly covers her mouth followed with hysterical cries and remorse that are muffled by her covered mouth… She stands there for a moment, sobbing.

H-He killed Jessica Momma, he killed Jessica! Her mother shakes her head in emptiness, her eyes slowly turned cold and dark. Reyna… Jessica died three weeks ago. Reyna shakes her head in denial - NO! H-He was over Jessica a few minutes ago, she was laying here… dead. She points to where the body used to lay. Her eyes widened as she noticed that where once lay her sister’s dead body was now a small, wooden stand with pictures of Jessica and a few lit candles. Reyna gasps again, before screaming NO NO NO NO!

Heather slowly pulls her right hand from behind her back, a 44. magnum revolver can be seen. Reyna’s breathing deepens as she realizes what is about to happen… MOMMA! - She screams. Please don’t do this Momma I’m so sorry… I-I didn’t mean to. M-My medication. I haven’t taken it in a long time. I’m so sorry! She reaches over and grabs a picture of her younger sister, and holds it tightly against her chest, closing her eyes for a moment and accepting her fate. Nothing happens for a solid minute or so, so she opens up her eyes slowly. Her mother had put the magnum to her temple. Before Reyna could even react her mother said, I’m sorry, Reyna, I couldn’t help you… I failed you. Heather pulled the trigger as a tear escaped her right eye, the gunshot echoing through the whole house as her body flopped onto the floor with a loud thud.

Woah this is such an intense and sad story. Describing a schizophrenia's thoughts and making them seem reasonable is a great task, and you make it possible. Her misunderstanding, thinking that her sister had just been killed by a stranger is a perfect example of how she cares and want to do the right thing, but struggle to understand the situation. Very touching story and I'd like to see you write more Coreena <3

Wow, I really appreciated this (: ! I might later on, in the future... perhaps when I start playing this character again. She does a lot of silly little things in character, and I definitely want to share them!

Working in healthcare, I can speak from experience while saying this is a very realistic interpretation of how something could happen from the perspective of a mental health patient. It's honestly refreshing, most times when someone talks about schizophrenia, dissociative identity disorder or other perception altering illnesses, people act like people just snap out irrationally and without any reasoning ability. I have a feeling the OP either has done their research or has had experience with people who have a disorder. +1
