i have been trying this lately to mimic the sound of wearing a gas mask in game. i have had a couple instances were my character had to take it off because some people couldn't fully understand what i was saying.

what's your thoughts on this?

It's been done before.

Some people try to mimic it like you while some use voice changers. It's interesting to see when done well, but if done poorly it can be quite annoying.

EDIT: Here is a video of the exact mask they have in DayZ. As you can tell when he puts it on there isn't much of a difference in sound anyways.

I have considered and tested just putting him hand between my mouth and my mic when planning new characters that wear face attire like gas masks. I have found that I need to seriously articulate and push my voice when doing it, but I can be understood just fine.

I really like the dedication to other people's RP experiences. Just find something that doesn't hold you back but gives the right effect that suits you, I suppose. =]

Realistically, the respirators in game would not give any "optional" output of your voice. they are not made for using in conversations. If they add modern respirators however including voice enhancers, then sure..use them. Now though it´s just too messy. Also, never understood the point in running around for hours in those old masks. Try it IRL and try it outdoors when you have hunger and sleep deprivation. It´s not a knitted ski hat exactly.

Gasmask are used for chemical attacks and so on - temporarily.

I dont think it makes sense to wear them all the time.

Maybe try it with a respirator?  They are used to prevent inhalation of noxious substances.

You could try out and put something in front of your mouth to create a soud like that - if you really think its needed.

You should always try out with friends to make sure people actually understand you.

I have seen people doing it from time to time and I didn't enjoy it that much. It feels a bit too forced, maybe it was the program people were using.

My opinion is, just talk normally.

Yeah, I've seen people who's done it very well, but others... Eh, not as well. Moral of the story: Unless you want your character to 24/7 wear a gas mask, don't create a special sound effect for it.

That's a very useful video.
