What Would You Like To See Integrated Into Role-Play?

Recommended Posts

I feel like there are various different opinions on things people are just downright bored with... Getting used to doing generally the same thing over and over again can lead most to be sort of blind to new and interesting ideas.

Me and other members of my group are always looking for new styles of role-play and new things things to add to role-play in general... Plus, I assume there are a lot of other community members who are trying to add something interesting to the table. So I thought, why not ask on a public thread?

What I'm asking is, what would you guys like to see integrated into RP? It doesn't have to be something specifically that you would like to see more of, but anything that crosses your mind.

Not sure if this has already been done or not, but I've been doing this with all of my characters since day one in this community.

I try to have all of my characters focus on one simple goal throughout their time in Chernarus. It could be simple, it could be complex and require planning. For example, Norman Casey's ultimate goal was to get his name known and feared throughout Chernarus, leading to mass holdups/robberies. My female alt, Abigail Ambrose, is in search of true love in the apocalypse, and tests men by seeing how much they can 'protect' her, (ie. robbing people for her, sticking up for her, getting her in high places). My newest character, Gary, is focused on taking the wrongdoings of others and turning it around on them. One person told me that he cut out people's eyes, but for good reason, so Gary captured him and poked his eye with a knife. He had noble intentions for hurting someone, however it was still a wrongdoing, so Gary did something similar back, but not AS bad. Had he took out someone's eye for the sake of taking out someone's eye, Gary would have cut out both of his eyes completely.

Most people who are relatively new to the server just 'survive', and that's all people tend to do these days. It gets boring and bland when people always just RP themselves, and never branch off to make a character with some effort. My first day on the server the first person I ran into was Robert Tam, and that was one of the best RP experiences I ever had. The character was so interesting, and so fun to interact with. I generally look at other people's characters as stories that are in the process of being written, and you can effect the outcome.

To answer your question, I would like to see more character's that aren't people's real selves. It gets blander than Cornflakes. When I joined this community, I was under the impression that people's characters would be something out of a popular title like Heavy Rain, or The Last of Us. Instead, it seems as though it's people meeting and greeting. No one's scared of anything, people shake hands, no one's nervous of disease, and it seems unrealistic. In Layman's terms, generally more realism and emotion as Frank said.

[align=justify]One thing that I've noticed is - as Frank stated before - that people are not afraid. There are very used to daily routine - even when reading through radio chatter most of them have some kind of shootout or torture in the background. Yes - you can say the famoust 'This far into the infection..." but really? For example for my character the fear against zombies always remains - even if there would be a cure, infection free world, my character would now be nervous and try to spot any threat.

[align=justify]But what I would like to see? Maybe when there's base building someone decent will try to start a town. Like a real community where you can walk the streets, visit neighbours - place where PLAYERS respect eachother no matter of their aligment. I don't say it has to be a Care Bear town, but something that will give this amazing vibe where you know you can get mugged/killed but also when you see a house you think "Oh, Jake lives there". Something similiar to towns in "Jericho" TV show or "The Last of Us". Because now most of these long term events, encampents end up being raided daily or burned to the ground in fireplaces, when noone is around.

[align=justify]I think wishing something is one thing but having ALL community members grown up enough to do so is the other thing, and that thing is very hard two achieve with constant flow of different players - because it can take only one player to ruin something many were building.

If you are bored of "different day, same shit" RP then i suggest to do something like my friend Johnny Thunders did to have some nice story and action RP within our and some other groups:

http://www.dayzrp.com/t-The-disappearance-of-Percival-Winsor

So make up some story with some plot twist and directed RP without letting other members know the details and you'll have some fun :)

Other thing is (but i assume you already did it) is to try to make totally different character than previous one. Or try to find an idea for group which was never done before.

Upon seeing the most recent changelog for the .59 update that is up and coming, I have started to forumulate an idea for either a group or a playstyle. I'm sure everyone has had their fair share of 'survivalist' gameplay where they hunt for their food in the forests (berries or game) and avoid towns as much as possible.

I'd like to propose a feudal-like society where players farm and hunt, carry blades and maces and rather then horde equipment-- only use the Courier bag (improved or standard).

I think this would bring an interesting experience for all involved.

I have high hopes for the random server events that were announced for the future by DayZ dev team. That should add a twist and an objective for the players so there's always something to do and they don't have to run around aimlessly.

it sort of like that but from what ive been reading there will be more stuff like Helicopter crashes will be dynamic events so you will the helicopter flying around before it goes down. Aswell as they hinted very much to Supply drops from planes.

I think people need to think more about how they would react to RP like Torture and things like that. Realize that these things can be very traumatic.

Link to comment

1)It annoys me when someone is tortured or injured - People seem to only feel pain for 10 minutes when suddenly, they act like nothing happened!

2)I think people should start talking in-game when they speak on teamspeak (ic) - You often come across people which suddenly go silent... You question them as they reply with "Sorry, there is a lot of radio chatter..."

3)I would love to see more character development! I come across people that ONLY want that gun you have in which they then provide limited role-play.

4)Robberies... Don't you hate it when people capture you? Suddenly you leave with completely different clothes and little gear? My old group never robbed for gear, at the end of the day your victim came on to have fun not to lose their green checked shirt...

More gritty, dangerous, and hostile apocalyptic RP. I want to see people wearing ruined gear (as I often do) without having to be questioned about it. I really enjoy the sort of rag-tag rugged survival groups that waste nothing and are trying to scrape by the skin on the back of their necks. I like seeing people be cautious, but not cowardly. I like seeing people who are immediately suspicious towards others in a realistic and confrontational manner. I don't understand the mindset of being friendly -- I really don't. At least not initially.

Things should be tense and dire. I'm hoping that zombies coming back will help ease survivors in this direction. I remember this sort of RP being a lot more common in .55 when loot was very scarce.

Also -- The amount of people that run away from me (and my group) before even encountering us sucks!

Personally, I would really like to see people portraying the situation a little more realistically. It's been a year into the apocalypse. You aren't going to see many people welcoming you with open arms after the first second you meet the person, nor will you be telling that person who you are, let alone your backstory on your very first meeting. I want to see more hostilities on the first encounter with someone. I'm not saying initiations or shootings, but I want to see many more cautious people.

My character has almost always been like this, even from the beginning. One case in particular many months ago I spotted someone near where my character lived. I shoved a gun in his face and demanded to know why he thought he could come near my home. The interaction was short, as I sent him back the way he came, but I enjoyed the interaction. I didn't have any intentions of shooting the guy, or robbing him, I just wanted to portray my character as realistically as possible. So in my opinon I would like to see more of that when it comes to the shorter interactions. Once you get to know the person, then you can start to let your guard down, but not by much. Once you get to know the other person very well, then it might be time to show the more human side of your character (the one without his guard up). For instance, Tucker is going to always be sketched out when he sees a new person, and for a while, he will be that way. Once you get to truly know him though, he opens up to you, and is willing to show the true side of him that not many get to see. Otherwise, expect him to be sketched out and borderline hostile with you.

Anyway rant over, I just wish we could see more of this in the community.

Cant wait for people to get crushed by said supply drops.

Even if the random events work well, im sure that there will be alot of funny moments involving them.

I would like to see more people trying to keep their hostage alive for RP. I've seen quite a few reports, and I know there are probably instances that aren't reported, where hostage takers just straight up kill their hostage for whatever reason. You didn't do what I told you to do? Bam. You said something aggressive, yelled at me, when I told you shut up or die? etc? Bam.

I've seen a few instances personally where hostage takers actually go out of their way to try and keep as many potential hostages alive as possible, even when there's a firefight where they have KOS rights against the hostages. And I have to say it's a lot more gratifying for both parties I feel, then simply using your KOS rights and calling it a day. I'm not saying everyone should suddenly become passive, loving, hippies who want to protect everyone. But considering NLR, if you kill your hostage they can't even remember the situation they were just in, making it awkward to even bring up to them in the future. (Remember the other day where I shot at you and your friends? No? Well...) I mean, you can't even really remind them, since it's kind of bordering on causing them to break NLR.

I'm even more confused by people who torture, mutilate, and perma-scar their hostage only to execute them at the end of the rp session. I'm assuming you're doing that stuff to teach them a lesson? Make them fear you? Spread your name and fear to others? Kind of hard to do that when they can't even remember how they got it done to them. Oh these scars? I don't remember, I must have been knocked out by...uhh...someone?

There was a situation IG for one of my characters months ago, where the brother of this guy I just watched blow his brains out decided to point a shotgun at me and my character's love interest. He initiated, and my group had KOS on him, however one of my group mates got the drop on him and he became OUR hostage. We could have technically killed him, but thanks to taking him hostage there was a lot of interesting rp and debating about letting him live when he could potentially come back someday and try to kill us again. We let him go, we were all able to remember the event, and it became a platform for potential future rp interactions between all of us. I'm sure that's just one example out of many people could provide.

Oh there's a lot of things I'd like to see integrated into roleplay but to suffice it , I'll do so in a few points.

1) People actually developing storylines: I am absolutely sick of seeing the same bullshit on the server over and over. Group A and Group B have a bad encounter- Group B calls Group A names - Group A declares war on group B and goes around robbing or initiating on every person as they may be in Group A. It's a year in the Apocalypse but it sure as hell doesn't feel like it. It's not attitude nor the lack of tools available alone, It's the fact that no one can make something or stick to a concept which leads to my next points.

2)People unwilling to Permadeath... - Personal dislike of it - when someone refuses to permadeath after multiple ocassions, multiple executions... it becomes a circle of kill respawn kill with no further story development because no one ever dies. Since this is the case like many have stated - There is no fear of the loss of your character, there is no worry to losing your current avatar's life as you will just respawn. So lack of fear which I think delves into the idea of Permadeathing as well as the endless cycle of respawn/death.

3) People unwilling to take their rp new places and are fine with sitting in the same old bullshit cycle. Bandit Greenmountain rob for gear, rinse & repeat. Walk around, gather supplies, talk to people make friends, walk around more. I am anxiously awaiting another Lore Event that can have an affect and get the server involved into rp on a global scale. A lack of direction. While people should make their own direction, I hope to see more Lore Events.

Pretty much it..Lack Of Fear, Lack Of Direction, Lack of Interesting Storylines. These reasons are why I cannot bring myself into RP. I can imagine others have these same thoughts. RP is stale because...there's nothing that changes, people continue a story and then suddenly drop it for a new concept 3 weeks later, or the opposite happens when people make groups that stay around forever but do literally nothing nor have any prominent goals. That's my thoughts on the matter. I do want to get back into RP, but I've tried forcing myself in but there's just nothing grabbing me. It's not RP as a whole as I am very active in other RP mediums, it's just DayZRP.

Hmm... It seems like everytime someone tries to make a 'community' of sorts like how you explained in DayZRP, it either gets destroyed by groups who enjoy taking down places of 'safety' such as these, or it gets corrupted by various members of that community looking for new and interesting RP that normally conflicts with the group as a whole.

In my personal opinion, the most successful 'community' was The Colony. It thrived for a good, long period of time, and it was eventually attacked which led to its downfall. I guess, if you could consider Dolina as a community we could say that was fairly successful and it lasted for a really LONG time. It was more of a peaceful gathering place like how green mountain used to be long long ago.

Gm wasn't a peaceful gathering place, it was made of people mostly who were new to rp and decided to run up to you and ask for a mag or pulse check you then run away and provided rather bad rp. That's why everyone thought the place was cancer.

Ah, personal opinion I suppose. I see your point though. I thought it was a pretty peaceful place when I first started RP. Never really ran into many problems up there during my numerous hours and days spent up there. I guess that's what I mean by it being generally 'peaceful' - not too many hostilities. Sure the RP wasn't that great but at the time, it was the place where everyone would come to just hang out.

Dolina was definitely a 10x better peaceful gathering place though RP wise. A lot of the times, RP was really heavy and interesting during its prime. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.

[align=justify]Yeah, sadly that's how it is. I'm not mad ad raiding camps, stealing or hostile RP - but with a good taste. But when done on daily basis or just to be a dick - like burning down the summer camp full of tents belonging to Olsha and Blackwood - ruins the fun. I know the IC reasoning behind some of these situations, but it's a game and we are grown up people and even with hostile RP we're not here to ruin someones day are we? I really loved the vibe that Olsha town gave me, when I found it by accident for the first time. Lights in windows seen from far away. Then the summer camp full of tenst just lined up, looking like a true refugee camp. Amazing. I heard a lot of good about The Colony, I've been to Dolina few times with different characters and I admire people just trying to achieve what they want, no matter what. In some cases there's just lack of mutual respect between players in general, not IC.

[align=justify]I've never been to GM but I've heared that yes, there's a chance of bad RP but also a lot of good RP situations are up there, even if they're hostile one. So it's just pure luck like everywhere you go - you can end up with amazing RP or bad RP.

[align=justify]Edit:

[align=justify]Yeah that's what I've noticed to. To make you feel better your 'This is bullshit' still rings in my characters head and that meeting in Dolina had a pretty big impact on him. :P And as stated before lack of development is pretty strange and the 'stale' term is accurate.

Its always nice to see something new, but I don't think people need to try very hard.

Some people try so hard to be different their character or even group could come off as trolly. I'm sure we've all seen some RP that doesn't make much sense, but a lot of the time people just don't want to be an average joe when it comes to their RP. It can defiantly be hard to find this balance, but as long as you RP with confidence and the RP you are trying is well researched you shouldn't have a problem.

I would personally like to see more people trying to get to know each others characters better. A lot of the time people will just ask, "where you from?" "how did you get here?" "are you Russian? :troll:" Small talk is great, but for a place where a zombie apocalypse has struck it seems like people's social skills have gotten even worse. I just think that if you see another living person that experience should be a lot more meaningful. I guess this might change when zombies are back in the game.

Wait a minute ... Bandits robbing people for nothing?

Anyway, I'd like to see less executions. Why? Because most people do not perma kill their character after an execution and there is no character development after the execution for the hostage. Find another way to RP the hostage situation out.  I do believe that as hostage you will have to give your hostage taker a reason to release you .... Just be creative :).

Like yesterday I was talking with FlashCrack since they executed me and I felt like all the RP was lost since I can't remember anything due to the NLR. We both agreed on the fact that there was no character development at all for my character and Flash gave me permission to remember all the RP situation but I just can't remember how I died.

I must add that while being taken hostage I gave it several ways to go so that I'd be released, like giving them information ( can always be false, be creative ) or I even tried to convince them that I could help them to stop the war. It's really important to take the initiative and give them a reason to release you ... It could bring up alot of RP opportunities!

Within the brotherhood we decided to stop executing characters that will not perma kill themselves. All for RP sake. I hope you all take this in consideration because it does not make any sense to execute someone and meet the person the next day. It just makes it awkward ...
