That's what i'm clearing up. some people were getting on to me about my radio post where i'm working on a vaccine.

Yeah you can try to create a vaccine anytime, you just can't actually finish it and say that it is working.

I've seen people RP as scientists / doctors all the time, trying to find a cure. As long as you don't actually RP that you found the cure you should be fine.

Well i think it would be pretty cool RP if he lied saying he completed the vaccine (but didn't really) and sold it to desperate survivors for a large price....of uh...beans?

I did the a similar thing with a character and others 

have as well.

Unless you are claiming to know more about the infection than you possibly could know.  There is likely more to your backstory, but just creating a vaccine shouldnt be a lore breaker.

I could see this leading to some very interesting RP scenarios. You could finish the cure, and test it out on a willing subject (get OOC permission first). You could think up some bad side effects to roleplay and potentially kill them in the process.

As stated above, as long as it doesn't work, you're fine.
