New role player, what should I do/not do in RP?

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty new to role playing in general, but have really grown to love the idea of it from watching live streams. I know no meta-gaming but besides that what should I know before stepping foot into legit RP? Thanks in advance for your words.

Check out the links that I put in your intro thread. They should give you a good understanding of the do's and don'ts. Make sure you read them as knowledge is power. The Guide section will be very useful to you. :)

Some tips: read the reports (useful to understand rule breaks and how to avoid doing them), do not do the "bandit dance" (when talking stand still, it's not pubs, nobody is going to snipe you), keep ic and ooc separated.

And also the other tips that I gave you on the other thread could be quite useful :).

Along with reading our community and standalone rules, Samaritan has given you a good set of resources to check out. Go to the Guides and Tutorials section for tips on most topics including how to make your roleplay better. It's not difficult, but in my opinion, there is an art to it as well. If you use common sense, realize some things will be limited by game mechanics and just let your character organically go where he or she likes, you'll do fine.

It starts out like a "roleplay," but I think you'll quickly find that your characters take on a life of their own. If you let them and go with your instincts, the roleplay is usually richer, more intricate and interesting. If you have questions, many senior members of the community are happy to help, along with any of us in staff. Feel free to jump into our Teamspeak channel if you have any questions or ideas you'd like to run past someone.

Most of all, have fun :)

My advice is play a friendly character at first and try not to to banditry. Once you have played for like one month you can slowly try to play hostile and see how it works. Way too many new people think that playing bandit is easy and they always end up in the report section.

Where is Green Mountain? I've heard the name before, but as I've had very little ig interactions and even though I have tons of hours of play time in pub servers I still don't know my way around very well.

If you go to the town of Zelenogorsk you will see a large tower in the distance. It is a compound known as Green Mountain. If you can't see it when you first enter Zeleno, try going to the school in Zeleno. If you still can't see it turn your render distance up.

As stated DON'T start of as a bandit (IMO), learn the rules inside and out first by playing ingame not just reading them then consider it, perhaps try to befriend some experienced players ingame and observe how they RP. Goodluck :)

Also, you might want to avoid being a retard/insane person at first. It is really difficult to pull that off correctly, and you might get yourself reported for trollRP/badRP if you do it poorly.

Also, don't be quick to point your gun. It doesn't take much to give others KOS rights on you.

And of course, only use OOC chat when you absolutely have to. If you gotta afk for just a couple seconds, you could just say you gotta wee, and go to a bush. Most people will understand, and if they don't, well, people usually don't point guns at people with their pants down in fear of them turning around quickly and spraying them down with piss.

When you're initiated on by more than one person, COMPLY. F2 is used to surrender. There's a good chance that if you run into a group of people they'll wind up initiating on you. Just go with the flow -- The people who initiate on you are required to give you good RP, otherwise they shouldn't be initiating. So, when you're inevitably robbed, relax and enjoy the experience.

WOw! Thanks everyone, btw I dont think I'll ever really choose to be bandit, never have yet in my 70+ hours of gameplay on Steam. Id like to farm and give out/trade food... idk yet though.

And its so cool to see all of you replying to my posts, I've seen a lot of you in all the other threads I've been reading yesterday and today. It's cool BeanZ haha

I'm awaiting approval! Thanks to everyone for all the tips and what to read up on, still reading some guides and lore stories. Hope being new to role play I wont be too bad if we run into eachother in game. I'm so stoked to finally try and have fun RPing instead of being KoS when players realize I'm trying to RP lol.

Nonononononononon.

OP, If you're initiated either by 1 or 100 bandits... learn to quickly check your surroundings, think ahead, and plan an escape route, all this within 5 seconds. If you strongly believe there is a chance you might make it, try it; If after doing all that you don't seem to have figured out an intelligent way of getting out... comply.

Always be prepared.

Do you think encouraging new players (who have probably never been initiated on before) to try escaping if they BELIEVE there is a chance? Montanez, how many people have we  (and our groups!) murdered in this game because they did EXACTLY that and it was a mistake?

hahaha They should just enjoy the RP bandits provide. I enjoy your RP and if I was rolling solo, you bet your ass I'd comply! I've had pretty good luck with complying and then finding an opportunity to escape. I think your tip is better suited for experienced players who have kicked a lot of ass before or are confident in their abilities.

really liked your response, that'd be way more useful for experienced players.

I have about 70+ hours in pub servers... rarely have i walked away from hostile interaction lol... but i still mainly roll solo... And i probably will with my first character here on DayZRP, but i will always be a friendly (i think lol) I want to be a farmer who helps every one fight starvation. Trading or giving food away. I know Ill have to deal with bandits and probably start over new, but thats just what i want to do (for now) But RIGHT NOW, Im having issues trying to get TeamSpeak... I got the server download from a thread that I cant seem to find again, but Im still on the TeamSpeak webpage, and cant get the client download... idk what is up with this, kind of frustrating...

Don't forget to tip-toe in your J's when it comes to sexual rp, as a new person you should probably just avoid things that can be viewed as sexual rp until you've had a chance to see some of the reports around it. Although the rules may allow it (to certain extents, with limitations), there's still the potential to cross a line by accident and it's not something you want to get slapped with in a report.

When it comes to rape, don't, straight up. There's only been one person that I can think of who rped a character that had something like that, Volke, and he had to jump through some hoops getting permissions etc. Most people however, even people who have been here for a long time, shy away from anything involving rape in their rp, for good reason. It's easy to make a mistake, definitely not something you want to get in a report.

Speaking of permissions, everyone needs it when it comes to certain actions. You wanna leave a scar on another character? Cut off a toe? Finger? etc? You have to ask for permission to do it.  //Permission to perma-mark, leave a scar on your cheek?   //Permission to perma-mark, cut off your right hand's pinky?  etc. Try to be clear what it is you want to do, but also try to keep it short.

That being said, why do you want to keep it short? Because you don't want to have excessive OOC. Things like.  //lol, that's gr8 m8.  Or constant lines of OOC things in chat aren't going to do you any favors, try to keep any OOC things you have to say to a minimum, it might be frustrating at times but it's definitely beneficial since it could spare you being in a report.

Don't go OOC in voice, excessive OOC in chat is one thing, and everyone might have a slip up from time to time. If you accidentally go OOC in voice, get back in character and try not to let it happen again, play it off in some IC way.

RP > Gear, you'll get robbed, probably a lot. The less you care about your things, the better, trust me.

Abuse of game mechanics, this is usually a pretty bad hit when it comes to reports. Don't loot cycle, do yourself the favor, don't do it. If and when someone gets caught for loot cycling, and generally they do, it's a straight up perma-ban.

Reports in mind, if you feel like someone is breaking a rule as you are rping with them, don't go OOC to tell them that. Let the situation play out, follow the rules yourself, and if you feel a rule is broken bring it up afterward either over TS, or by asking a Staff member, or putting up a report against the accused. But again, don't talk about these things IG.

I'm sure there's plenty of other things that could be said, and advice people could give. But most importantly if you have specific questions about something, don't be afraid to ask. The staff team is very helpful, and can probably answer just about any question you can think up. Just remember, better safe than sorry.

And have fun out there! Hope to see you IG sometime.
