COMPUTER TECH

So I was looking around and couldn't find a computer tech thread.  Just a load of "My PC Build" threads.  Wouldn't it be nice to come to one thread where questions can be answered and technology can be discussed?

Like how bout dem 6th generation i7's and i5's?  Thinking about getting one with the new build I am working on.

Or maybe you want to know about hard drive writing speeds and how they effect your recordings of DayZRP for that dank report you are working on. The possibilities are endless!  I have been lurking around the exkode forums and found it might be time to move to an SSD for recordings.  But first I actually need a powerful rig to handle all this crazy stuff.

ANYWAY!  Discuss computer things.

Those 6th generation CPUs look cute and all, but new Intel tech is always a bit of a gamble, personally I'd go for those cheap 5th gen i7s while you can, very fast, easy to overclock. Buying a Skylake build won't make it futureproof and might even cost more.

At the moment I bought an upgrade to my computer last year, I bought an i7 4790K (Devil's Canyon) and it's not gonna become shit anytime soon. Skylake might be a lil bit overkill at this point in time, same with DDR4 RAM. That being said, my 4790K is a stock 4.0Ghz and I overclocked it to 5.0Ghz (something I would do with great caution), and it runs games ridiculously smoothly.

If you're worried about running the latest games, you'd be surprised how cheap you can go to still run it. 16GB of ram only became necessary around this year/last year, since 8GB of ram was more than enough, should you have 1600-2400Mhz. If you wanna be able to sit there like "Fuck my PC is cool." then go for a Skylake/DDR4/GTX 900 build. If you're looking for a PC that is equally badass, cost effective and probably still gonna make you go "Fuck my PC is cool.", then go for a Haswell/DDR3/GTX760/960 build.

I've got a i7 6700K and to be honest its fantastic, but very expensive. Because the tech is so new you will need a 1151 chipset to run a 6th gen so you will need a new motherboard. I haven't noticed any performance issues and I can play most games an ultra and it handles it. I used to have a 4790K and that was great for its price so I can recommend one of those more. My build at the moment is a 970, i7 6700K, 16gbs of DDR4, MSI B150M motherboard, 600watt PSU, 1 250gb SSD, 1 1 terabyte HHD, all that inside a BitPhoenix Prodigy M. Minus the peripherals and OS it cost me around 1500-1600 AUD (1069-1140 USD) about 3 months ago and I couldn't be happier.

I've just built a new rig and decided after some advice from the community to future proof it. It worked out at only being about £50 more to make everything 6th Gen compatible. I already had a nice case, PSU, DVD drive, Graphics Card from my old rig. Only thing that I need to upgrade now is the graphics card and maybe more Ram, my rig:

Intel® Core™ i5-6600K Processor (3.5GHz, turbo to 3.90 GHz)

Asus Z170 PRO GAMING Skylake USB 3.1 ATX Motherboard

G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 8 GB (4 GBx2) DDR4 2400 MHz Memory Kit - Blazing Red

EVGA NVIDIA GTX 750Ti FTW with ACX Cooling

Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive

Corsair 120mm Hydro Series H80i Digital High Performance Rad All-In-One Liquid CPU Cooler

That's a nice rig.  Think I'm going to go with 6th gen then and I will reuse my GTX 680 from this PC.  Basically I'm replacing everything except the case, hard drives, and gpu.

Personally I would get a better GPU, as that GPU will start to fade out in the coming years. It's a very good budget GPU though, I will give it that. I just see so much money spent everywhere else, when GPU and CPU matter most.

It is something that I'm already looking at. The graphics card was out of my old rig and due to the cost of other things it was always something that I was going to replace at some point. I'll also look into getting some more Ram.
