Charles Dormer - Background Story

My first attempt at the background story for Charles.

With a pained grin Inspector Charles Dormer opened the door to the Chernogorsk Police Station for the first time since the world went to hell. As the door creaked open the sunlight streaming in through the open windows caught the dust hanging in the air. It was both the same, yet different since he had been here last. There were the same grimy walls, tacky floor tiles and rusted old bars; but the bustle, light, and noise of the station was eerily absent. With a faint smile he thought back to how naive he had been when he first entered this building. The fresh-faced and eager Metropolitan Police liaison to the Chernarus Police Department. "Observe and assist" was his remit yet he couldn't help but feel he was just another box to be ticked on the UK's International Development Program.

He had been hoping for a posting in Novigrad, with its regular flights back to the UK and a strong signal for the BBC World Service. Yet upon landing in Novigrad International Terminal he had been informed, in the curt manner shared by all Chernarussians, that his posting would be in Chernogorsk, the industrial grey city in the North. With a cheery nod he'd accepted a lift to Chernogorsk, raising his eyebrows as his police driver engaged the car's blue lights to get through traffic and force slow vehicles to yield. The issues that the Chernarus Police Department faced became even clearer to the Inspector as he started working with them in Chernogorsk. A lack of training and equipment meant it had to rely on the CDF for any large scale disturbances. This was coupled with a complete lack of accountability or strong leadership, resulting in corruption from top to bottom. Although this was not unusual for a country recovering from civil war like Chernarus, it was to prove fatal in the coming months. Sam remembered October 10th very clearly. It was the date that the Commissioner of the Chernogorsk Station, after everyone returned from the manhunt in the woods, had handed him his ceremonial hat and Makarov pistol to thank him for his help, even when Sam had very firmly explained that the United Kingdom frowned upon handguns. With a sigh he had strapped the gun to his hip, reasoning that he may as well enjoy it whilst in Chernarus.

Looking down he saw that same gun, now grimier and well used, but with the cyrillic letters still clearly engraved on the handgrip. As he walked up the stairs to the Commisioner's old office he remembered the panic and frustration that had been present in those last few days before chaos. He remembered the hushed phone calls and the closed meetings with successively more eminent Doctors, CDF commanders and government officials. After checking the building thoroughly for any trace of a remaining police presence, Inspector Longton turned his back on Chernogorsk District Police Station. With a groan bordering on despair he crossed it off his ever shortening list of stations and set off down the road once more.

He was determined to observe, and to assist.

Was looking for something to read while my hand were preoccupied with a crunchie, and this was a good pick. I loved all the little details - the engraved Makarov, dust in the air, the overly optimistic outlook of Sam even when he gets reassigned upon landing. And the lines about the officer abusing his lights in traffic and the ignoring of the Sam's thoughts about receiving a pistol made me laugh. I liked it, good writing
