Original Groups are hard to make.

Recommended Posts

It's hard to make "original" groups now. It seems that every idea has pretty much been taken. Some people get upset that groups are copying other groups which is understandable but making groups that are completely different from others is difficult.

Here are some group ideas already taken. And it's a big list:

Mercenaries

Casino(Gamblers)

Rebels

Army

wisdom/knowledge group

Nationalist

SO MANY survivor groups

illegal business (drugs/human trafficing)

A FEW "All walks of life" groups

A couple "Police/law enforcers"

"shady" groups; reapers, etc.

gangs (biker gangs, etc.)

And there are more that I could list.

How are people supposed to make original groups when most original ideas are taken and sooner or later there wont be any more original ideas.

Just because the concept of the group like the examples you mentioned yourself, are commonly used, the background and execution of said idea is what makes the difference, people have made plenty of similar groups in the past and provided some great RP.

Just because it's used doesn't mean you can't, as long as the backstory fits with the lore.

A lot of people have criticized "The Casino" saying that it copies the Gamblers (who aren't even around). It isn't even established yet completely and the background lore isnt even complete yet and people are saying it's too much like the gamblers.

Try making a group of survivors that think they are controlled by someone. Actually, they don't even think, they're just puppets of something outside of their universe. Everyone of them is controlled by a different person, which are called.. Wait for it.. Gamers.

 There will always be those kind of people around, besides like you said yourself Gamblers aren't around anyway so I don't see why you should stop.

Your comment may be a bit narrow.  Sure some groups seem to have a similar "theme" to others but that doesn't necessarily make them the same.  I don't know if you are going off the group threads or from IG experience but personally speaking, just because a specific group seems to fall into a certain category doesn't mean that it is the same as another group that may be pigeonholed into the same category.  They will likely have their own goals, group dynamics etc etc which will distinguish them.

I think there are also groups which are sometimes hard to pigeonhole, for example, "The Jackals" as sometimes you really don't know what you are going to get with those lot.

Also, to prove that there may be some original ideas, I quickly thought of 2 that may not have been done:

  • "The Cherno Mimes" - group focused on trying to spread the "joy of mime" to the survivors of Chernarus (obviously there is a flaw here in that they are screwed when they put themselves in a box to keep out the zombies);
  • A "reverse bandit group" - hold people up but instead of taking anything they drop supplies/ammunition/weapons and force their hostages to take them to help ensure the survival of humans;

Admittedly I have not tried to start a group, but I think saying there are no more ideas left is like saying that everything has already been invented.

The Traveler    118

  • A group of "nut jobs" who believe the apocalypse has come, and humans are now being judged by some "uncomprehending force", they worship weapons, being eternally grateful for what they believe to be the gifts of these forces, granting the ability to survive the inveitable demise of their species.
  • A group of arrogant "survival nuts" (The ones who actually happened to have "zombie plans") who are now convinced they are the world's only hope, all because they were weird enough to actually have a plan for this, but have only just recently come out of the forests and, in turn, know nothing about the zombie lore apart from old clichés such as films and comic books (Hilariously getting stuff wrong all the time)
  • A group of Budhist monks whom, even with the oncoming apocalypse, stay by their ways, never harming anyone, not even zombies. HAve them be vegetarians, would-be peace keepers, medics and good Samaritans. Never firing a single shot or throwing a single punch ...

 Need I go on? That was 10 minutes work... stop complaining about your writers block and go find inspiration instead, it's what I do :P Go on a walk, go to the local art or history museum, there are triggers for great ideas everywhere, you just have to look :3

"When one door closes, another opens. But we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door... that we do not see the one that opened." -Alexander Graham Bell

Huehue. We're the 1st Law/Police group. I claim it!

Also no.... just.... just no....

tin can lids can be reshaped into improvised arrowheads in real life... hint to the devs.

At the end of the day a group idea is nothing without the people who make it work.

You mention the Gamblers, I think of Johnny Denver, Darion, Pauly.

I think of Aylcone I think of Alyssa, Reiner, Buddy.

I think of the Inmates and remeber Joffery, Carlos and more.

I think of the trust and there's The Chief.

See what I am geeting at?  It's often not the group idea that is remembered vividly.  It's the people.

Making a group idea that is original is tough, but even if the group isn't all that unique, if the people, the characters that come to play ever day are, and you can build your group upon that very thing;

That's what really sets things apart in my mind.

I agree with many of the others, it is the characters that make the group, though sometimes its the group. Also keep in mind the rule of the internet, if you have thought of it, it has been done. Here especially with the fact that the Mod ran for how long and had numerous groups. What I thought had been an original idea, the Chernarus Post, a group of previous postal and delivery employees trying to restore mail routes (Think the Postman with Kevin Costner) what could be more original right? Well apparently back in the mod days a group had a package delivery service. Admittedly ours was rather indeptly designed, but in the end I just didn't have enough people interested in being couriers, nor did we have Persistance at the time, so delivering letters and items could become difficult. That mixed with the logistics of making contact with a client and the reciever made it difficult since we could not just leave packages to be picked up. I hope to bring the group back once they devs settle things a bit more.

My point is, even if its not an original idea, it can still be creative and fun to play. Chances are if that is the case it will be fun to roleplay with and people will appreciate that.
