Doctor Harper stares blankly at himself in the mirror on the wall. The sound of rushing water from the sink fades out everything else in the background. He looks down to his hands which are shaking under the steady flow of water and is disgusted at the sight of the dirt and blood that slowly turns orange as it runs off his hands and down the sink. He begins to scrub off the blood as hard and fast as he can, grabbing the bar of soap in anger he rubs it into his hands, the soap starting to turn a murky orange.

The Doctor then slowly raises his head to stare once again at himself in the mirror. He doesn't look like he has changed one bit but in his mind he knows what happened in the last few hours has made him a different person. He looks himself in the eyes and thinks if he could have done anything different, then the memories hit him and all he can do is watch as the past re-surfaces.

3 Hours earlier

"We will be landing in about 2 minutes doctor. Here you should take this for your safety!" the Private shouts over the headset as he holds out a Makarov pistol to Harper who is sitting directly infront in the cramped helicopter, "you shouldn't have to use it as we will be there but if things go south its probably your best option! Just take off the safety, point and shoot! Its really simple!". Harper takes the gun and stuffs it into the gun holster on his vest, "Hopefully I wont have to use it! This should be a simple case in a remote area that hasn't been hit yet!" Harper shouts back.

The helicopter starts to descend towards the crash site. Harper looks behind him out of the small round window to see the two cars in different directions off the road, the cars are a complete mess and a body of a person can be seen laying unresponsive on the road. One leg looking twisted, an arm either under the body or completely torn off and a pool of blood stretching out around the chunk of meat. Yes a chunk of meat, that's how Harper saw it as he knew the person there would be already dead, probably thrown from one of the cars when the high speed incident occurred.

Harper grabbed his bag containing medical supplies and dashed from the helicopter. Running straight over towards the body in the road he saw the grizzly state of the accident. The left arm was severed off, the skull cracked open and brain matter could be seen across the road surface. Harper didn't need to check the pulse he knew this guy was already gone and continued to run towards one of the cars.

The sun had just started to go down behind the trees as Harper approached the vehicle, he turned of his torch located on his vest and looked inside the car. In the front was a woman laying against the steering wheel, her body lifeless, blood dripping down her face and turning her blonde hair red. Harper lent into the broken side window and put his fingers on her neck. There it was, a very faint pulse, not much but it was something to work on. As he looked across to the window screen he could see it smashed as if a person was thrown through it, he turned his head back to the woman and noticed a small hand in-between the driver and passenger seats. He immediately pulled his hand from the vehicle and looked through the back passenger window that was undamaged, the light of his torch shone through and exposed the body of a small young boy, his neck twisted in a unnatural way, his body motionless and his eyes open staring back at the doctor, the pupils fixed and dilated.

"Doc! This girl didn't make it! No pulse and brain all over the steering wheel!" Harper heard this, his eyes still staring at the small boy. He started to experience shock, his hands began to tremble. He had seen accidents before, mostly the survivors being pulled into the A&E on a bed by the ambulance crews. He knew the person shouting this was the Private by the other vehicle, "OK! we have one person still alive here! Its not 100% certain but I think she may make it!" Harper shouted back as he pulled his gaze away from the back seat of the vehicle and got himself back in the right state of mind. He moved back to the front of the car and pulled at the driver side door, it started to budge but not enough to properly assess the patient, Harper looked over his shoulder and shouted to the Private "We got anything to cut this door off! Or even better the actual roof!" The private noded and ran back to the Helicopter.

A couple of minutes later a few soldiers run over with a set of jaws, Harper finishes putting the central line into the patients chest and holds the saline bag up outside the window of the vehicle. Within a few minutes the roof and door is detached from the car and lifted out of place by the soldiers. Harper now has a better field of view of the patient and can see that her legs have been crushed by the wreckage. He instantly grabs the Sphygmomanometer and wraps it around her exposed arm. He takes the blood pressure reading and shakes his head. "We need a surgeon now with an amputation kit! and I could do with another Belt!" Harper shouts as he pulls off his belt and wraps it around one of the exposed thighs, the Private instantly gets onto the radio.

A small Helicopter lands on the road opposite the wreckage. Out jumps a woman with blonde hair and a surgical bag, she ducks and runs over to the wreck as the small Helicopter starts to ascend blowing up a cloud of dust. "I didn't mean for them to send you!" Harper shouts to the woman over the loud sound of the Helicopter. "They didn't! I volunteered!" The woman shouts as she pulls open the bag and begins to pull out various surgical tools. "Oh I forgot one thing" she says in a panicked voice, the sound of the helicopter now faint in the distance. "What have you forgot, you knew what was.." Harper starts to say concerned but is interrupted by the woman's lips hitting his. She slowly pulls away from him and looks him in the eyes "I was concerned about you, you said you wouldn't go out on runs". Harper can hear some of the soldiers in the distance chuckling and the faint sound of a wolf whistle or two. He ignores this and thinks of the patient, "Lets talk about this later Sarah. This woman needs her legs amputated and we should stay focused on her".

Harper looks away as he holds pressure down on the left Thigh. The sound of the saw can be heard going back and forth along the bone, its a sound Harper hates. "Doctor Harper! Radio message from HQ! It sound urgent! Something about one of your patients!" shouts the Private from the other side of the wreckage. Harper nods and stands up, a soldier runs in to take his place. Harper begins to walk around the wreck and takes the radio from the Private.

"What's the problem" Harper says into the radio as he turns back to look at the patient in the wreck, "Yea give him another 3 milligrams of Morphine and monitor his pressure" as Harper speaks he notices a deep gash on the patients passenger side arm and looks at it carefully. He never checked the patient properly and he knew it, slowly the arm starts to move as if the woman was beginning to wake up, "If the patient gets worse contact doctor Rostov im busy out here!" Harper shouts in frustration, he notices the woman's arm stop moving, her head slowly turns to his side and he can see the blood red eyes. "Sarah!" Harper shouts as he throws the radio down, the Woman's head turns quickly towards Sarah, her teeth snapping as she fights the seat belt holding her in place and sinks her teeth into the soldiers neck. Harper instantly grabs the gun from his vest and fumbles around with it, Sarah falls back away from the woman in a state of panic. The woman pushes the soldier away and starts to wriggle free from the chair, her eyes fixed on Sarah, her teeth snapping and a deep growling comes from her throat. Harper manages to flick the safety and fire a shot which misses the woman by inches. Sarah starts to crawl back in fear not getting to her feet, The woman pulls herself free, the sound of her remaining leg snapping and ripping echoes as she falls out of the wreck to the floor inches away from Sarah's leg. The sound of a shot echoes around the trees. Sarah is still fumbling around with her feet until he realises the woman is lifeless, the hole in the side of her head. It wasn't Harper that managed to kill the creature but the Private, who begins to walk slowly towards the injured soldier clutching at his neck on the ground and unleashes the fatal shot to put him out of his misery.

"Harper! We need you in here!" the voice snaps the doctor back to the present day. He shakes his head and instantly grabs the towel next to the sink. Drying his hands he turns around, throws the towel to the floor and walks back into the room cramped with hospital beds and patients.

I don't really know what to say. So much in this world has changed, mainly for the worse. I'm now travelling around with a group that like to torture to get information.

Don't get me wrong these guys seem to be doing a good job at making this country work again. The communist ideology is something that I feel must happen if we are to get back on our feet, but the torture, is it worth that?

Just the other day they instantly held a man up at Green Mountain because he refused to give information, we took him inside the building and I was ordered to hurt the man to make him talk. I just couldn't do it, I looked the Polkóvnik in the eyes and said 'I'm a doctor, I heal not torture'. His eyes stared into mine and I could see he was frustrated with me. So one of his men took my place slicing into the mans leg, I patched him up then applied pressure to the wound as hard as I could to make him talk. Its not like me to do this but if I want to stay safe its better for me to take part right? The man got beaten to an inch of his life and all I could do was stand there and watch..

A few days later I'm told to hold up a group in a clinic in Gorka. I do as I'm told, making my request very clear for them to drop weapons and put there hands on their head. Some didn't comply and were shot down, I didn't dare watch the slaughter, I looked away to the hills in the distance before moving into the building. That's when I saw him, this guy holding his gun up at me from one of the back rooms, I thought this is it, but no he just dropped the gun. Some Americans that were planning some meeting, I don't know the full story but I don't think they were expecting us there.

We took the two captives away one ending up with a bullet in him after he mouthed off at one of my group. The other, well we took him to a location and tortured him. I have to say I enjoyed it, holding the man down as his feet were burned by a flare. just looking at the man all I could see was that American UN Private that was at the accident site so many months ago. That man that Sarah cheated on me for, I still see her laying still after I gave her that lethal dose of morphine to ease that pain for the bite. I also still see that Private begging me to do the same for him as he clutched the bite on his arm, of course I refused, he ruined my life, everything was going so good until that night at the crash site.

Sarah was a good surgeon, I still miss her alot and I doubt I will ever get over her. I still carry around a picture of her in my pocket, I think its the only thing that helps me get my sanity back.

Back to the group I'm with I guess, as much as they torture and kill I know that with them I'm safe, we have each others backs and were a good unit.

Paula and Conor are the individuals that stand out most for me, I don't know what it is but although I don't talk to them much when I have or when I have heard them talking they seem like me in a way, like they have lost something and they want to forget some of the past.

Dr. Harper slammed shut the door to his locker and looked into the small rectangular mirror attached to the outside of the door. It had been three weeks since the incident out in the field and a week since the split from Sarah.

His eyes looking tired and his hair scruffy he turned and walked to the door of the staff room. He took a deep breath as he looked through the glass window in the door to see the workplace. He pushed open the door and walked out to the sound of crying babies, telephones and shouting. Most of the patients had basic wounds such as cuts or bruises from the riots or just from escaping their home town, many would be here just running up and down the corridor looking for loved ones.

Harper walked to the front bench dodging grieving families and individuals holding out their hands to grab him to see them first. He reached the desk and looked to the back wall to see two boards covered with names. This job was non stop, Harper felt like a med student again living on two hours of sleep and a coffee to keep him going. "

Harper you look like shit" a voice said from behind. Harper turned to see Dr. Rostov holding a cup of coffee out to him, without hesitation he took it and started to drink. "I see were jammed with patients like always, when are the UN getting them out of this country?" Harper said turning to the boards, "Their not, the countries in quarantine, we've been told to stick it out and wait for a cure" Dr. Rostov said as he took a patients folder and walked away.

Harper stood there in shock, did he really just hear that? Suddenly the doors smash open and the paramedics bring in a bed. Harper puts down the coffee and runs over to assess what is happening and escort the paramedics to a trauma room.

Harper pulls out his hands from the mans chest, pulls off his blood soaked gloves and throws them into the bin. The patient was dead, too much damage was done by the six bullets that penetrated his chest and stomach. "Another day in paradise" Harper mutters to himself as the nurses begin to cover the body.

It was now eleven hours since Harper started his shift. He still had one more hour to go before enjoying the boring office work of completing patient notes. Tiredness had kicked in and he was running on autopilot, he opened the cupboard with his keys and took out a small bottle of pills, without thinking he put two in his mouth and swallowed them down. "Harper!" shouted a voice from the other room. The doctor shook his head, placed the bottle back in the cupboard and walked to the next room.

As he entered things seemed odd, his sight slowly went abit blurry and sound seemed muffled. In the room he saw a nurse with a man holding a young girl who had a small cut on her head. Harper quickly raised his hand to stop the nurse from speaking, he didn't know what she was saying all he could see was her mouth moving. "Clean up the wound ill be back in a second" Harper said as he walked out of the room and down the corridor.

He slammed open the door to the bathroom and rushed into a cubicle locking it behind him. Quickly he got onto his knees infront of the toilet and pushed his fingers down his throat. he gagged but nothing, slamming his hand into the cubicle wall in frustration he tried again. Finally the tablets were brought up and landed in the toilet, this wasn't the first time Harper had taken drugs without thinking since his break up with Sarah.

Harper sat in the cubicle, tears slowly started to run down his cheeks. He knew he had a drug problem and with the shit that was going on he had nowhere to go to seek help.

Well, where to start?

The last few days have had a lot happening. I've managed to keep myself away from the drugs, although it has been tempting when opening up the backpack to see the morphine injections.

We had a wedding the other day.  Nothing traditional just a hill with our leader being the priest and a few beers. I'm sure Paula and Conor enjoyed it. We also found a few locals, I've forgotten what they call themselves because I mainly stayed away from any torture that may have occurred but it seems we keep having a run in with this girl that talks to teddy bears. I've met her about three times now, turns out she also drinks blood for some kind of blood god. Poor girl seems to have lost her mind. We held her up just the other day with some guy, he said he was forced to drink blood then out of nowhere he was given permission to carve a B into her head. Once everyone walked away to deal with the guy who apparently had human meat (we couldn't tell what type it was) I patched her up, although I saved most supplies for the group. I just hope she takes my advice and keeps that wound clean and dressed.

After all this we decided to move towards Dolina where I met a woman called Amy who was travelling with some guy. We then met another guy who, of course, we held up to get information. I was more concerned with the woman wearing black that seemed to be staying in the area. Finally we caught up with her and held her up aswell, as you do, and found out she was travelling with some kids or something. I think her name was Alek, she gave some of the guys a mouthful and I had to laugh at her bravery, or stupidity, but we let her go.

I guess writing this is helping with keeping me off the drugs, although I doubt anyone will be around to read it. Amy seemed pretty hot though, maybe ill see her again.

Oh also whilst searching a house I found a tape, hopefully ill be able to find something that's still working to play it on. Ive been missing the sound of music to chill out to, and a comfy bed of course.

Chaos Theory - Part 1

The infected woman runs at Harper with her jaws snapping in rage, her appearance much like Sarah with the addition of blood streaming from her eyes and the sides of her mouth. Harper raises his arms over his face and pulls his head to the side looking away from the attack and feels the teeth sink deep into one of his protective arms. Harper jumps up from his pillow, his neck and face damp with sweat, another dream. He sits up on the bed looking around his apartment, it was the third time he had a dream of a friend as an infected running at him and sinking in their teeth, was it a sign of things to come?

Harper gets out of the sweat soaked bed and walks to the next door bathroom. Only the sound of the continuous stream of piss into the toilet could be heard in the quiet bathroom as Harper relieved himself and yawned. Finishing up and flushing the toilet he walked to the shower, turned the taps and proceeded to get in to enjoy the warm water hitting his skin. Harper stood under the stream of water, his eyes closed for what seemed like hours, as he opened his eyes he looked down to the small needle marks on his wrists and felt the need to get some more drugs in his veins.

Throwing on some light green scrubs he walked out of his apartment and down the stairs. His hair still wet from the shower and his breath smelling like peppermint from the toothpaste he opened the door and walked out into the sunlight. It was a cool day and the sight of the giant white medical tent could be seen down the street. Harper walked towards it looking around at all the refugees going about their lives, focused on watching the people setting up stalls to sell valuables he failed to spot the military vehicles driving down the road he was about to cross. A loud horn from the lorry woke Harper up from his daydream and made him jump backwards onto the pavement, "Get out the fucking way!" shouted the UN soldier from the passenger window of the lorry as it past by with speed. Harper shook his head and waited for the convoy to pass before finally crossing the street.

As Harper walked to the front of the medical tent he noticed a young boy standing in the queue, his back facing in Harpers direction and small drops of blood could be seen hitting the floor. Harper walked over to check on the boy to see him holding his nose, as Harper got close the boy looked to him, his nose had a trickle of blood, his skin pale and his eyes were bloodshot. Harper had not seen the boy before in the town and without thinking instantly grabbed the boy into his arms and rushed him into the hospital tent, the boy burning up with a fever. Kicking open a door to a room he rushed in and placed the boy gently on the bed, the infection was here.

Harper grabbed a mask and put it over the face of the boy covering his nose and mouth. Grabbing the nearby phone Harper called the reception area of the hospital tent, instantly there was an answer from Dr. Rostov. "I need you to quarantine room one, the infection has made it here. I've already been exposed if it is airborne so I'm staying in the room" Harper yelled before slamming down the phone and looking behind him to the boy, the boys eyes now showing fear.

Harper tried to act calm, he set up a saline IV and injects some antibiotics into the bag. Mixing the bag he hooks it up and inserts the IV needle into the boys arm. The needle goes where it is needed and Harper tapes it down and sets the IV to administer a few drips every ten seconds. This was the first time he had seen someone infected since the incident on the road and this time he had no gun to defend himself.

Its been a while since I wrote in this book about current events and so much has happened. To get straight to the point I have left the group I was with, things were getting out of hand and it started to feel like there was a target on my back. Infact it still feels like I have one on me just for being affiliated to them. I've noticed that in the last few nights I'm constantly checking over my shoulder and have the feeling I'm being followed. I haven't had a decent bit of sleep and I can already feel fatigue setting in.

The group.. them so called Chedaki, helped me with everything but it seems their past actions on this land just cannot be forgotten by certain people, especially the locals. So now I'm alone again having to scavenge for supplies and watch my own back from the infected... or them locals that could easily recognise me, maybe they are following me?

I don't know what to do anymore, recent events have left me both shocked and in fear, the last few nights I've been just looking at the morphine injector in my bag. Its so tempting after being clean for so long to just take a hit and enjoy the effects, couldn't hurt right? Its not like I have anyone that may need treatment now..

I just hope Conor and Paula are alright..
