What do you look for in an RP session?

I have been white listed for about a month. In my first week I was only able to get on about an hour or two each day due to the server populations and my personal schedule. When I first logged on, I avoided an maps and just went where the road took me. I did not meet anyone for a whole week. I logged on my first time on a Sunday and met other people on the following Sunday.

When I met them I enjoyed some good RP. We talked about our backgrounds and why we were there. How we had got where we were. They RPed their skill sets. One was a soldier and RPed his skills that way. I was not and enjoyed the banter as they tried to tell me about guns and I responded in confusion not understanding ammo or weapon types. It made for good RP fun as we traveled together.

Since then I have had very little interaction. I come upon a person here and there and have about 5 minutes of RP as we seem to be going separate directions. I try to start up some longer RP but it seems those I have encountered are set on getting gear and just keep going once they have determined I am not a threat.

So recently I decided to head to the infamous Green Mountain. I have read about this area in so many reports and sought to stay away from it. Personally my character had no logical reason to head there. But after running along the coast for 3 hours and encountering NO ONE, I decided it was worth a shot.

So I arrived and immediately hear voices from over the wall. I enter the gates and am excited to share the wealth of fresh food I had recently hunted (I play a fisherman/Hunter/Cook). As I cruise in I can hear a dispute between several people and the conversation seems to be about payback for being robbed. A guy is upset that he was robbed and now wants to settle the score. Someone else suggests they hash it out with a fist fight and let it be settled afterwards. As I watched the fight I am approached by another guy (BTW I have receive no greeting or acknowledgement yet) approaches me and asks me to trade him my pants. Simply says "hey trade me those pants" and asks me to go over to the corner to do the trade. When I tell him I have no interest I watch as he goes over to another guy and asks the same. Then I got to listen as the other group that were involved in organizing and watching the fist fight now have changed the conversation to an issue with someone insulted someone else. The guys says he didn't and someone else says he did.

I don't know about you guys, but I felt like I was on an elementary school playground. It seemed like the RP was all about creating some conflict and this is not what I was looking forward to.

So tell me, when you meet some people, what do you look for in an RP session?

I like a realistic portrayal of character and subtlety, there's nothing better than sitting around a fire exchanging stories and wandering the land with genuine people. This may sound boring to those who crave action, but I just enjoy a more leisurely approach to RP. I've been a military character and done firefights which do get the blood pumping, but only if they are for good reason. As in I wouldn't go out of my way to find it.

My first experience with GM was...

walk through the gate, no one in sight... friendly walks in after me. We greet each other, find out there's a friendly in the tower looking out on the country.

Notice the jail's main doors are closed... Slowly walk up to the door and open them. To my shock I see two dead bodies on the floor but no commotion. All the sudden a crouched man in military garb tells me to get out and run as fast as I can out of GM. Then I hear him tell his conrads to check the tower, but by that time I was in full sprint heading west without looking back. Haven't been there since. Wish there was more RP going on there but glad I left with my life xD

I want to be surprised. I want to see the unique person that they are, how emotional they are, and what motivates them to wander the wastes lands. I so far have met a lot of people like this. I hardly meet the super soldier.

Gear :troll:

I usually look for down to earth characters who lead simple lives. The farmers and fishermen of Chernarus.

I just enjoy meeting fellow survivors and shooting the breeze honestly. I happily share most of what I own with people that are in need, and most people I run into do the same for me. I have to say most of my roleplay is rather specific though. I enjoy general talk about what is going on, especially theories about what the rest of the world is like from the broadcasts, but I am here to try to get mail delivered, and thats what I am traveling around for. So a lot of what I talk about is who I am trying to find, and people telling me about those people. Right now specifically Blackwood, who Yuri has been trying to find for weeks now.

I want to meet people with diverse character and story. I like to interact with others in such a way as it deepens the plot of my character and those around me so that after months RP'ing when my character dies (hopefully in a dramatic/sad/honourubru way) I and those who played with me can look back and think "wow".

*tear*

Hm, what do I personally look for? Nothing really, except interaction. If you aren't that good at RP, I still enjoy it, maybe my rp will help ya' out. If you are a god amongst rpers? You can dang well bet I will be taking notes. Either way, I enjoy the time, and hopefully they enjoyed it too.

People not on TS with each others.

This annoys the shit out of me every time, 5 people not talking that appears to have a hive mind every time they do something? Should be reportable IMO...

I like being in a group of people that arent so familiar. You never know what everyones intentions are and thats a bit a of thrill for me. Just trying to figure out where to stand and who to avoid. Lotta fun.

All very good responses. I appreciate seeing these responses. I guess I just haven't had the luck yet. If what I experienced at GM was a norm then I certainly have no desire to go there again.

Look forward to running in to some of you.

Kpop, maybe you will run into me one day. My character is a Fisherman, although I still have to figure out how to get Ashwood so I can make a darn fishing pole.

For me, even though I've been apart of this community for nearly 2 years I still feel new to RP. My best encounters have been when the other person really knows their character and has some sort of agenda. Be it to find drugs, eat people, get some crazy revenge, or just to try and force themselves to be my best friend. Other RP I have enjoyed is when people are quiet, yet speak wise words and make you want to get to know them better.

In addition to all these are characters that utilize their emotes, stances, and items to create visual conversation. Such as pointing, using certain items to mimic doing something and so on. While at times it can seem tedious while doing it, It has a huge impact on my immersion and drawing me into the conversation.

One of the ways I'm almost instantly lost from the RP is when "looting" occurs. For example, running into places doing a quick loop and leaving or standing in your inventory hoarding everything. I find it better and more enjoyable to just look and really only bother with really important things than try to grab everything for the sake of grabbing it.

Back in mod, i played a forgotten left behind machine gunner from the U.S. military, having been in the military i was able to play that character fairly well. and often times the RP was wonderful. everything from just walking the coast helping people out, to nearly getting executed for not giving up information on my group. It was hard for me to not find good RP from any group i came across. Now in standalone i find it hard to get good RP from anyone aside from my own group. Yeah there have been a few here and there where ive had about a half hour of decent RP. but thats only been while i was with my group and we were meeting up with some other group. I still have yet to just be out by myself and encounter anyone that gives me good RP for more than a few minuets befor they say something along the lines of "well uhh i really need to be going now...um good luck and all that" before they just run off and loot things. i dont need someone to sit down and tell me their whole life story, just offer to bring me along with you and adventure a little. Hell i could even get robbed and have good RP as long as it was done right.

I enjoy meeting every diffrent characters as long as RP is good. I like ppl who rp regular guys traveling from town to town and looking for a medicines, i enjoy meeting some little freaks like my favourite Tom in pink rain coat with Jeffrey (?) teddy bear. I enjoy every single character which can change few more words with you than "i'm trying to survive".

I love ppl with characteristic and intense voices.

People not on TS with each others.

You are me :3

Anoymous, I feel you there on the quick RP and go encounters. I often would try to travel with new people I meet because well Frankly it's not like I have anything else to do or a specific place to go. Most of the time I feel like the other solo person wants to be just that solo, maybe get better gear first, I dunno. I feel like having a travel partner makes it a lot more fun though.

I look for experiences that develop my character, my character goes to the prison to be free from zombies. The last time he was there he unknowingly escorted a 'trusted' cannibal through protection and to his buddy, he started a fire fight then attempted to escape in a fire fight and ran at me, out of panicked I shot, my character became broken he sobbed and just lay there shocked that this 'trustworthy person' could even commit such acts. In that session a cannibal gained my trust and abused me and also made me kill my first human. This developed my character to become distrusting and a little less friendly. It was a really fun session overall!

I'll add what I do not look for.

I DO NOT look for someone who, out of boredom, attempts to create a confrontation just to make something happen. For example... last night my friends and I make our way to Green Mountain. I didn't want to, but I was in "Along for the ride" mode, so I was expecting inane role play of the lowest order and I was not disappointed. Now let me couch this by saying some really good stuff happened while I was there in terms of most of the 20+ players in attendance at GM.

Then it happened. A dude with a skull mask rolls in with a few friends. He acts strange (no, I never saw that before ever. Please someone call the awards committee), then when that doesn't elicit any actions he starts trying to start a situation by insisting this person or that person insisted they were odd/strange/wife was crazy/etc.

So he is trying to manufacture something, out of nothing. Why, I ask? My theory is he was bored. Now, I might be tempted to rat him out to the powers that be for any number of things like baiting or plain straight up **** role play, but he was so obvious, and bad, at trying to cause something aggressive or potentially violent that he doesn't deserve that kind of attention, and here's the real punchline:

HE IS NOT ALONE! I've met scores of players who try to create a "situation" out of nothing, and it almost always is some form of trying to bait others into a violent confrontation, or some form of confrontation. I am not a KOS type, but it actually fills me with the desire to run your toon over with a truck out of disgust.

Here's an idea: if there is no situation to be had, make one that doesn't wind up with a KOS and a ban. Really, one of the biggest sandbox games in the gaming industry and all you people can come up with is baiting and violence? For realz?

I feel much better now, like I pushed a turd out sideways. :D

I love watching RP from a far with binoculors. GM is fun to see what happens, gun fights are common. It reminds me of fallout almost.

My first experience with the standalone consisted of me going onto an empty server to try and learn the game. Wish I was on a RP server at the time, had no one to help me learn how to craft a fireplace so I died from the cold.

Happy to be part of a RP community now since I'm new today to DayZ and this forum. But look forward to meeting people and working with others to survive!

I like it when I actually seem to meet people who don't run off within a minute.
