Suggestions (PC UPGRADE)

I have this PC that I would like to upgrade. The only things I want to upgrade are:

- CPU

- RAM

I wanted to know what would be the best option (I mean CAP it as much as this motherboard can take with the best components on the current market) what can it take?

The Motherboard is: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A78_PLUS/specifications/

It's a 64 Bit OS (Win 7).

And here is the current hardware I want to change in this computer:

- CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 (3.4Ghz)

- RAM: 6GB DDR2 (4 sticks).

Any help would be greatly appreciated :D

I'm not an expert at all when it comes to inside the PC haha.

Can this motherboard take x6 or x8 AMD CPUs at all?

And what's the best ram I can place into this motherboard?

You might want to replace your motherboard as well. From what I can see it's an AM2+/AM3 socket which isn't really going to get you many options for a CPU. I'd say get a new motherboard with AM3+ socket and a FX-6300.

As far as RAM goes, you need to decide if you are willing to get a new motherboard and see what RAM frequency it supports. For example mine supports 1600 MHz so I bought 8 GB of DDR3 1600MHz ram.

What budged do you have anyway?

In short your current motherboard only supports the last generation of AMD CPUs so you're not going to get any upgrade at all CPU wise without replacing that to a higher tier AM3+ motherboard or moving over to Intel

Thanks for the help guys. I figured the MB would be the huge problem here. I'll look into it. Any GREAT solutions at a GREAT price out there?

Budget doesn't really matter but of course cheaper price is better hehe.

http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/ is a great resource to get some feedback about parts. I'd recommend 2x 8GB sticks and an intel CPU (runs DayZ/Arma engine the best).

Idk about compatibility - www.pcpartpicker.com can help you there (along with pricing and sourcing - it's a great site).

I use an Intel core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad Core Processor and it's pretty great performance-wise, but does get a little warm sometimes during longer sessions w/recording. I will be upgrading to some form of i7 when this one dies on me though - need something more suited for video encoding.

Good luck with the build!

Pretty simple:

Intel i5 4690k + any (cheapest) Z97 mobo + 2x8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM

Should land around ~450$

You also might want to get a new cooler for that CPU if you want to OC.

That sounds pretty decent :) thanks rolle I'll check it out!

I'd suggest this for a new motherboard/CPU:

And for RAM, get a 16GB (8x2) Corsair Pro Vengeance RAM kit. Newegg has a fairly priced one.

Just, uh, make sure your case can hold it all. Heh.
