Question about the DayZ infection

The infection itself that the developers invented, has there ever been any specific info given as to the origins or the composition of the virus, and how it works? Or is it simply down to our imagination?

Are the infected reanimated dead, i.e Dawn of the Dead, or are they living humans completely controlled by the virus (28 Days/Weeks Later)?

Are the survivors naturally immune, and would it be possible to be an asymptomatic carrier, like those seen in 28 Weeks Later?

Does the virus eventually kill its host, could they potentially starve, or do they live indefinitely?

Anyone know anything? And if there is a source for any info, could you please direct me to it? Thanks :)

Point me to the specialist medical team working all that out for us to know, and I'll gladly hand you the report myself.

[hint, hint, high RPing potential is high.]

I am hoping to join the server, and being inspired by 28 weeks later, had the idea of being a bite victim who still retains a large amount of self control, but is not entirely asymptomatic. I am curious to know whether or not this would be considered acceptable, as I do not know the virus well.

Only scarce info from Rocket, all else is speculations. All we know is that they are "infected" not undead.

Indeed, they are 'Zed's not Zombies.

Otherwise he left it vague so people can create their own stories as far as I know.

We have a few stories already made in regards to the infection, how it spread and even a timeline. Check out the RP forum and if you have your own ideas why not put them in also. :)

Have a look at these:

This could be quite difficult to get right. I would say that maybe your character could be having a reaction from it but you certainly could bring in an immunity to the disease.

Most of our characters must be immune otherwise there would be no explanation as to way we do not contract it.

Maybe just roleplay a survivor that is having a reaction to the infection but slowly overcomes it? Even this could be tricky to get right as it opens up a lot of questions.

More power to you!

Don't be so blunt as to say it's a virus. What if it was a prion disease? That would explain the zombie gait. I like to call it "Necrotizing Rabies", because that quite perfectly summarizes it. I also think it's airborne, but the survivors have been vaccinated, which might explain the extent of the disease. But of course, this is just my idea... What we DO need though, is a unified date of events. My history book is still in beta and is only the first "candidate".
