When Heavens Divide

Prologue

Part One

We've been holed up in this hotel for couple of days now and we are running low on food and water. Electricity went out as soon as we got here and water went out yesterday. You would think that the International Hotel would have it's own supply of back up power and water, well you thought wrong. In Chernarus things are different. The Soviet reign over this nation left a deep scar both economically and politically. And the fact that Chernarus hadn't recovered from the last civil war isn't helping. What the movies taught us about zombie apocalypse, well all I can say that things didn't go like we thought.

The whole mission was a mistake in first place. The intel just wasn't good enough, we were sent to escort high officials in the middle of chaos. Takistan was a mess but compared to this it was a walk in the park. When we landed here it was all out war in the streets. Police and the Military were rounding up the civilians, executions were held in back alleys for those who thought were infected. It was only the beginning. The Prime Minister himself didn't trust CDF to protect him so he contacted ION Inc. I kind of understand why he did that after I saw what went on in here. It was a six man team with two cars. Jack and Rodriquez were in my team while Göran, Jackson and Wu were in the other. Our task was to escort the PM out of Chernarus while the others were looking for scientists at Green Mountain.

It was supposed to be piece of cake, get in Elektro, make contact with the PM and escort him to Balota for his jet and get out. Getting in was easy but getting out proved to be the hard part. The CDF guarding Elektro had been notified of our arrival and the importance of our mission and we were let in without any trouble but during the five hours we spent in Elektro waiting for the PM the city was put under a total lock down. Nobody was allowed in and those seen trying to leave the city were shot on sight. We were turned back at the checkpoint leading out of Elektro and forced back to PM residence. We tried to contact the Operator and CDF HQ but we couldn't reach neither. Deadline for the mission was closing in and we had to get out of Elektro.

The situation was about to get out of hands. Rumor was that the CDF commander in Elektro was killed by his own men who were now looting the city for anything valuable. So we made a decision, we had the package and we were going to complete the mission. We packed our stuff in the SUV. The main exist from the city was heavily guarded but the industrial area wasn't. I guess we took the CDF by surprise when we drove the black SUV over the railroad track and trough their makeshift checkpoint. Once they opened fire we were already heading towards Cherno on a open highway, full of burning cars and corpses.

Part two

Chernogorsk was even worse than we had thought. There was looting everywhere, cars and buildings were on fire and what authority was left tried to keep people in order. It was chaos. The road from Prigorodky was full of cars and people trying to get in to the city, so we decided to go in from the coast. Sounded like a good idea at the moment but we soon realized that it wasn't, for once we get to the docks the streets were mostly blocked and the only road in was so tight that we barely made it in. We tried to make it trough the industrial area when we saw gun fire in a head of us and soon we came under fire our self. We tried to back out from the area but one of the tires was hit and we were forced to disembark.

We returned fire and Jack made a decision to pull back to the city square and to the International Hotel. While we retreated with the PM to the hotel we heard explosions and gun fire coming from the east. We made it to the hotel and established ourselves in the roof. Jack tried to contact the HQ and inform them of our situation. From the roof we saw how bad the situation actually was, the CDF from Elektro was rolling in to the city firing on everything that moved. We saw how people tried to make a run for it and how CDF fired on CDF. Jack finally managed to get contact with the HQ, they promised to send an EVAC chopper in 48 hours and ordered us to hold tight.

The fighting in the city calmed down and the bigger groups started to move out of the city while the zombies took over. Most of the groups headed north away from the big cities, probably hoping to get over the border and in to Russia. We established our base of operations in the top floor and gathered what ever supplies we could find but it wasn't much. During our search we found more people hiding in the hotel, civilians and couple of police officers. All who had been hiding from the military and more survivors started to flock around the hotel.

Part three

We waited for the EVAC that eventually never showed up. After a day we had lost all contact to the HQ, it almost seemed like everything had just seized to exist. The situation got worse by the moment as the hotel was slowly filling up with survivors, our supplies would only be enough to feed our team and the PM. We could survive on low rations but the civilians wouldn't be able to do that and if we would enforce it, we would have an riot on our hands in no time. So we had no choice but to venture out from the hotel. All those who could carry a weapon were instructed to form small groups that would go out to find supplies, from Chernogorsk and the nearby towns.

I stayed at the hotel and tended the wounded. It was bad, we didn't know enough about the infection. Could it transmit trough bites? Would it turn living people into these monsters? With the amount of wounded people in the hotel it's safety was compromised. Even though it was the safest place in Chernogorsk at the moment. The military had mostly looted the city before they had gone north. Our only hope to find anything was to send groups to Elektro and Zelenogorsk. Our maps were full of markings where to go, all information was used to find us the much needed supplies. Many of the teams we sent out was never heard from again, some came back with empty handed, some with more supplies and some even came back with more survivors.

It had been a week since we had lost contact with the HQ. Radio had been silent for the whole time until one night, I think it was Friday. We started to hear a weird transmission. It was mostly in morse code and much of it didn't make sense. It said "We are no longer alive STOP This message will play every hour if operators are no longer responsive STOPMESSAGE Unable to quarantine subject change STOPMESSAGE" then there was number of coordinates which gave locations to random points in the map. Did it come from the military? Some believed so and the said that it had been mistranslated. Some said that there is a big radio tower in Green Mountain up north and that they had seen people going in and out of that place frequently past year.

People were convinced that the military had set up an refugee camp up north and they were now calling for any survivors and offering them help. I wasn't so convinced that this was the case and neither was my team mates but Team Two had been sent to recover people from Green Mountain. Could the transmission come from them. We agreed to wait over the weekend to see if the transmission would continue before we would make a decision.

The tension between the survivors started to grow and three different camps formed over the weekend. There were those who wanted to go to Green Mountain and seek out the army, the second group consisted of those who wanted to go north-east along the coast and reach Berenzino and the last group was us and those who wanted to stay in Chernogorsk and wait for help. A lot of heated arguments happened and people almost started shooting at each others. The supplies were running low and now word had come from HQ so Jack decided to scrap the mission. The groups were given a choice, they either follow the orders of Jack or they will leave and do as they please but they would be on their own.

The most stubborn people decided to do as they please and a massive exodus headed towards Berenzino and Green Mountain. Fifteenth people decided to stay with us at the International Hotel. But we didn't let those people leave without radios, for we wanted them to contact us in case they would find a safe haven for survivors. Even though I considered it highly unlikely that they would find anything up there, they were probably walking in to a trap or simply chasing false hope. But they had the freedom to choose for themselves, even if the choice would turn out to be the wrong one.

Our group continued to operate from the International Hotel, we reinforced the entrance, gathered supplies and even build up an S.O.S sign on the roof in case the outside world would send recon planes to look for survivors. Probably whole Chernarus had been declared dead and a huge cover up was in place to prevent outsiders from gaining knowledge of what was really going on in here. Governments like Russia, UK, Germany, France and USA were probably in talks to send clean up units to get rid of all possible survivors and gather intel of the outbreak for future research and development. Because surely this virus or disease wasn't created by accident. There was something more behind this. Something that important people wanted to keep hidden.

Days passed slowly as we tried to survive in the Hotel. Even though we all knew that outside the death was awaiting around every corner the people we were with seemed to be at ease, almost happy. At least they were safe as long as they staid with us. But I knew that they all hoped that one of these days the cavalry would ride in and bring salvation to this land, I saw many of the standing on the roof trying to spot aircraft or ships at the sea. But nobody came until after two weeks someone saw an helicopter going towards west, possibly Balota.

Jack and Rodriquez were determined that this was our ticket out of here and they decided to form a team to go there. I was to stay behind with the Prime Minister as I was the medic and second in line of command, I didn't object for I find it hard to believe that the chopper was even real. Jack, Rodriquez and 3 other people left the Hotel to check Balota. I had a bad feeling about all this but I agreed that we couldn't stay in the Hotel for ever. Jack was to contact me in three hours and inform me of their findings. Those would be three long hours.

Central South Zagoria, Chernarus, 2230 hours

The nightmares are still there and they are getting more weirder by the day. It's like they are someone else's dreams instead of mine. I've lost count of the days I've been here, feels like eternity. I've avoided people as much as I could, for I've seen what they do to each others, there is no civilization anymore. We are killing each others like animals, hunting others for sport. Is that what we all are? Animals, deep withing our human nature we are still animals. Of course we killed each others before all this but it was different, we had our reasons, good or bad there were still valid reasons. I've seen Americans, Russians and even Chernarussians fighting each others over puny things.

Even I've killed people for reasons that are not mine but someone else's, someone above me. We all follow orders, whatever you agree or not with them you still carry them out. I've seen journals and posters about heroes. What is a hero? A knight in a shining armor riding a white steed? I doubt it. The heroes are those who have all ready died. I'm no hero, never was nor never will be. I'm just a killer hired to do someones wet work. To cover up after others, to cut off loose ends. To kill those who are responsible for all this, or at least those who could harm my employees. Yeah that is my mission. Or was. I don't know.

Little by little you start to forget who you are. Who you were before all this. What did you and where did you come from. Things that mattered before are no longer important. Here a lowlife in the past can be a king and the richest man before is the poorest. It's almost something biblical, like during the times of the Crusades. Who am I? Is Ilyich Jugasvili my real name? No but I cannot recall what is, was my real name. Where am I from, was I born in Russia? Probably not. When you are at my line of work you start to loose touch of your past, you want to forget it. Those painful memories. You just suppress them and then you find yourself in the middle of nowhere thinking about them.

Yeah, I can still remember the warm breeze of Black Sea and that night in Sochi. And the smile.

Central South Zagoria, Chernarus, Pop Ivan, 0605 hours

I heard shots coming from the direction of Stary Sobor, and it wasn't the first time. It seemed that there was something in Stary Sobor that attracted survivors and not all of them were willing to cooperate with others. Several different shots that sounded like AKs. But I couldn't stop I had my mission, my orders. Pulkovo was still several clicks away and the morning sun was all ready rising in the east. I had to hurry so I would make it in time, Chernarus was dangerous in daylight.

Usually the predators came out at sunset but in Chernarus they come out after sunrise. And these predators were after the most dangerous game.

Central South Zagoria, Chernarus, Green Mountain, 1600 hours

I made it to Green Mountain or what was left of it. The tower was still standing and it was transmitting a weird signal. It's seemed like there had been some sort of military outpost here but it had been over run by zombies, just like rest of Chernarus. I've decided to hold here and establish a base of operations there, heh operations, right I'm the only one left of my squad. Abandoned by my command, I'm used to it though, makes things easier. I've collected some supplies from Zelenogorsk, I should be okay for now as I have plenty of clean water, food and medical supplies to use. Zombies swarm the woods and the compound day and night, I try to remain as silent as I can while trying to figure out what does this transmission mean.

The instruments here seem to be somewhat old and in bad shape but I have managed to capture some transmission from all around Chernarus, radio traffic from some radio show that is being run here and lot of military traffic from several different groups. But this transmission originating here is blocking my attempts to reach the command. I don't think I wan't to contact any of these groups out here, not yet. I need to figure out their true intentions.
