Ok, the reason i want them removed is it makes the life of a dedicated sniper alot easier then it should be. In my opinion being a sniper should be hard since its a extremely effective tool to take out people from long ranges.

Without rangefinders you will actually recuire some skill to estimate the range to your target, and you will be awarded if you posses this skill.

With a rangefinder anyone could take hit the first shot which is the most important one.

Any thoughts about this?

I agree. I think every sniper should depend on either his map or his mildots to estimate range on the fly, as opposed to easily bringing out rangefinders and zeroing the sniper for a really easy shot. Such a powerful skill should be a bit more difficult.

Disagree. Reason being is that they are extremely rare and well sought after pieces of kit. When using mil dots to get the target distance over 900M away is a real challenge.

I have only ever found them once since playing on this server the rest we have acquired from fights/robbery's.

I think they should be left; reason being that they are well sought after peices of equipment and people who find them can use them for bargaining chips, or trading. and it does make me feel warm and fuzzy that when the shit hits the fan my over watch will actually be able to kill someone instead of missing and watching his whole group go down in a blaze of glory. Think about it. If you remove them and they arent there and you go into town but station a sniper in the hills to be your over watch and let's say you are being robbed. this guy robs you gets away and you all find him. Problem is the scum who robbed you isnt alone and bullets get traded back and forth. Lets say these guys outnumber you 2 to 1. That sniper in the hills keeps missing cus these guys keep moving about and he cant get the range right ,and YOU ALL die. The sniper is now the only one left(probably getting shit on by his teamates in skype or teamspeak) and you have now lost your gear. Now if this said sniper had range finders he could have taken a few out. Either forcing them to run and hide to escape or make the 15 minutes go down for a re encounter, or you could have killed them all thus ending the threat. there's a reason the make put rangefinders in ,and there's a reason why they are a rare item. Removing them would cause more problems than it's worth if you ask me. But what does everyone else think?

TLDR

I have only ever found them once since playing on this server the rest we have acquired from fights/robbery's.

Every time I've killed you guys while you had it up north, everyone of you have them.

That in itself is not true we hardly ever have them.

Thats because your lot don't go further north than Staroye!

Anyway, I fully agree with their removal as any sniper worth his salt should be able to zero without them. Plus, SVD's and KSVK's are going to be the weapon of choice now for cowardly sharpshooters and since they have build in rangefinders, you won't be needing laser pointed ones.

Remove 'em please!

I think that ragefinders are so rare that them being a little bit OP can be justified.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but in the new mod NVGs and Rangefinders are being added to barn loot tables (or at-least they were in an earlier build) making them slightly more common.

And sadly, this being dayZ, there will always be duping. After the last server wipe me and my clan didn't see rangefinder's for a very long time and then suddenly we started looting multiple corpses with rangefinder's on them, and suddenly they became a lot more common. This was around the same time as the massive influx of M107s.

I think the rangefinder's should be removed, as sniping should be a skill that you should have to practice. You should have to learn the formulas to calculate ranges and do them yourself, and if you calculations are wrong you are going to miss the shot. Anybody can pull out rangefinders and see the exact distance to their target and zero to that distance/ line up the mil dots. Its alot harder to calculate the range accurately yourself in the middle of a firefight, when the target could be crouched, prone or standing which will require you to adjust your calculations.

And with the KSVK being introduced, with rangefinders it could basically be the replacement of the m107, which will probably result in the same result as we have currently on the server, all major firefights are sniper wars. Whoever has the more m107s wins. Without rangefinders, it will require a quite skilled sniper to be able to calculate ranges at 1km accurately, practically impossible to calculate it to the accuracy of a rangefinder, meaning that to be really effective with a KSVK, you will have to be a KSVK specialist.

This madness got edited few builds back :)At the moment, NVGs can be found only at crashsites and barracks. Rangefinders can be found only in barracks.

I think rangefinders should stay, but testing will show if there needs to be a balancing tweak implemented (we can always lower their spawn rates if needed).

Duping always will be an issue and deleting items is not the way to solve it.

Possible, but like you wrote. Those guys would need rangefinders AND KSVK which will be harder to get as it spawns only in barracks. This should cut down on amount of such combination.

Thank god, when I first read that change I was like:

Now it should theoretically, but still one of the challenges is making sure the server doesn't get overpopulated with rangefinders (as with other rare items), within a reasonable amount of time. Obviously there will be a point where KVSKs and Rangefinders will be as common on the server as M107s and rangefinders are today. But the longer you can delay that, the longer the re-playability of the server for big clans who often take part in fire-fights.

But the main point of my post was that sniping should be skill based. At the moment it is too easy for snipers to sit 1-1.5km away with their m107s and rangefinders and pick people off. If you don't have m107s you are basically screwed against any opposition who have that set up, its quite hard to spot a prone target 1.5km away and then move up on them without being spotted.

if we want to look at the realism, a sniper usually has a spotter with him, who calibrates he wind, checks the distance, radios in actions ETC ETC. a sniper by himself is usually a dead man, i feel that if your holding a sniper rifle, you shouldnt be allowed to use range finders.

or im totally wrong.

*shrug*

inb4 shitstorm.
