Poor Humor?

Recommended Posts

Kat    101

At what point do we, as a community, draw the line when it comes to poor attempts at humor or making comedic comments about horrendous events? A couple of weeks ago, I had the misfortune of being in a TS room, where several people decided it would be a great idea to post jokes about the tragedy that took place on 9/11. The fact that this was 2 days after the anniversary made these remarks that much more inappropriate. I guess I could have returned the favor with snide remarks about journalists or such, but instead, I left.

I guess my concern is that we spent such a great deal of time discussing what constitutes sexual harrassment, and yet, two days later these comments were made. The harrassment issue was victimless at that point, but we spent page upon page arguing the point. This event had thousands of victims and the pain and fear is still impacting an entire country.

Honestly, I didn't know what to say at the time. I mentioned it to an Admin at the time, and it was "brought up" in admin chat, but nothing came of it. I sent a PM to Rolle, assuming that he had read the admin chat (I know what assuming does), but that wasn't the case. So here I am, asking the community's opinion. Where do we draw the line??

i saw this thing on reddit and thought it was cool

"Some people make jokes about stuff like 9/11 as they find it hard to talk about."

might come in handy :)

edit: didn't mean "cool" more just comes in handy when people make jokes about stuff like that

So.. what TS room is it? If it's one that you weren't invited too it shouldn't be a problem and they can discuss whatever they want, no?

So if we are in a clan channel talking about stuff and an admin hears it and thinks it's innapropiate. they can ban us because of them invading our space of privacy?

Yes but people will get offended because they can. That is how the internet works.

By this post I'm not trying to defend 9/11 jokes or sexual harassment, I'm simply saying what's widely regarded as a fact really.

Well there you go, staff clarified it is not allowed. Done here, right?

Well if I'm in my own locked channel with 1 other guy and I'm joking around about raping his mother then I personally wouldnt see a rulebreaking offense there, but I'm usually on the SDS teamspeak and not really on dayzrp TS so I guess that's none of my business.

You can't say or do anything you want on DayZRP TS. People have been banned for sorts of inappropriate stuff from trolling to child porn. Your 'space of privacy' is non existent. If you want complete freedom to do whatever you want, get a private TS.

If you want to make jokes that alot deem taboo/very offensive/derogatory do it in your own ts, or mine. There is no point risking a ban for a joke that someone is sensitive to.

9/11 is a tricky example. Its a huge national trauma for the US, but its often used as an example to be ridiculed because certain people think its a good example of why certain "incidents" in history has been given so much more attention then certain others. Comes along with general criticism towards modern media I guess.

This is especielly prevalent in the younger european population and US critics. So I can imagine the jokes would've been made from those people and in that context.

Does that make it okay? Absolutly not. Its a classic example of failing to keep other people's perspective in mind.

Kat brings up a legitimate problem that frankly applies to far more then just the 9/11 example. The civil war in Ukraine, in Syria, IS's rampage etc etc, too many examples to count. It would be ideal if people just tried to avoid joking about these conflicts in general because the truth of it is that there's a lot of people in the community that are directly affected by them and where inappropriate jokes are just insulting.

Saying "this is the internet" as a reply to such is not an excuse, its an explenation. And as I've said before, if we are to grow as a mature community with mature people, we should strive to maintain such a maturity.

Respect that some people dont find these kind of jokes funny, and at least avoid doing them in their presence, especielly if they ask you to.

Of course child porn is a no no. That could get DayZRP in trouble because it's against the law in most countries, yes? And of course you can't troll. But I think if you are in a locked channel just talking to your mates, you shouldn't get in trouble for just messing around

The joke mentioned 9/11 in passing. It was actually racist, directed at Muslims, and I probably had more of a "right" to be offended by it, being Pakistani and of culturally Muslim descent. A joke made by a Community Helper in the same room was also quite racist against Nigerians. I find it funny that you were willing to overlook those and focus on something that just about mentioned 9/11, especially given that you are criticising the community for holding particular issues in stark focus and holding others as "less important".

I was invited into the team speak channel.

And Major Tom, I'm not quite sure how you can say that the "jokes" were not about 9/11 as they specifically mentioned them.

But I guess my question is, is it acceptable to mock the deaths of thousnds of people so that someone from another country can get a giggle? If so, that's sad...

woah woah woah, racial comments were being made by staff? That's just sad. Racism isn't okay at all. It's almost as bad as making 911 jokes.

If you want to be honest, I pushed them all to the admin. The whole thing was offensive. I don't care if you are black, white, American, Nigerian, Australian, gay, straight, have 12 toes or what. My reference point for this thread was that, as it was the last straw. Don't try and make me seem like some higher & mighty diva. You don't know me well enough. I'm sorry that you found it acceptable.

Isn't this what this thread is about? What was literally described above too.

Why is 'almost as bad'?

Mas o menos. They are basically the same in offensiveness when it comes to making jokes about that subject

Just IMO, lots of people make racist, sexist and offensive jokes.

I admit i am one of the people.

I try to keep it at a minimum, but when nobody is offended in the room, chat or whatever i am with them in i don't care. I will just make the jokes if people giggle.

People get offended about almost anything these days.

There is been going on worse stuff now at this time then 9/11

Not saying you have to forget. (well i do, it happens and i move on that is my thing.)

But just overlook all things....

If you cant joke about 9/11 then you can't do it with aids, ebola, cancer, ww1 and 2, all things involved in war, racist jokes, religious jokes and so on.

Then the jokes will stop, most jokes are offensive for some people and for many people it won't .

depends on the joke.

let the reply's come. :)

I found it okay because I'm used to it. It's just amusing to me when people treat 9/11 like a 'last straw' for offensive jokes - post 9/11 American 'patriotism' resulted in the deaths of over 30,000 innocent Pakistanis, god knows over a million innocent Iraqis, and is probably a root cause for many deaths that still happen every year. I appreciate that 9/11 was a national tragedy but there are many, many national tragedies every year and this community would happily overlook the impact of jokes about them because it's easy to do so. And I'm used to that. I'm not painting you out to be anything.

Pretty much agree with Glenn.

Also this thing you talk about is big, but imagine in my school, stuff like this is ordinary... Hell, it might be even worse...

How does american Patriotism have to do with the death of Pakistani's and Iraqis? I don't think the US army killed civis. we went over there to kill terrorists. Not civilians

Thread has been derailed massively, I understand your frustration kat I do, I find some of the jokes people make very offence and some of the sayings very offensive but at the end of the day it's just people being narrow minded and stupid, just brush the shit away and you'll find the good people

The death of anyone is nothing to be made light of. It's great that you are used to it, but many people don't find death amusing. No where did I say that the response of the US in killing innocent Pakistani's was the correct thing to do. It should never be accepted. I'm using 9/11 as the starting point for this thread because I know how I felt that day, when I was 7 months pregnant with my daughter, worrying about the world I was subjecting her to. It would be the same feeling anywhere that a national tragedy happens. I just want to figure out why this is overlooked and accepted.
