Characters partly ripped off of the Walking Dead series. Hope ya'll enjoy!

The Americans

Dr. Edward Jenner looked out of his office window. Since this whole ordeal had started, he and his co-workers had been mostly in the dark. But not for long, they were the CDC after all. A column of 3 U.S. army tanks rolled slowly down the street adjacent Dr. Jenner’s office. The vehicles stopped, attracting the attention of shoppers and those enjoying their day.

Suddenly, 3 trucks pulled over onto the sidewalk. A dozen soldiers jumped out of the first truck, and ran to the two rear trucks and lifted out sandbags, barbed wire, and roadblocks. The squad leader ushered the civilians out of that area of the street, and continued working. Overhead, a UH-1 Huey circled around a skyscraper, and then landed.

This was downtown Atlanta, July 29th, 2012. Dr. Jenner sighed, and then turned around, sat back down, and sent an email to the commander of the military cordon of Atlanta, asking for clarification on what was happening. The Colonel would never receive the email, and even if he did, he would certainly not have responded.

It was 4:00, time to call it a day. Jenner shut down his computer, pushed his chair under his desk, and folded his papers into the crumpled briefcase lying in the guest chair. He paused, and stopped to look at a picture on his bookshelf. It was his daughter, who was at school at Georgia Tech. For a moment, he worried about her, but then dismissed his anxiety as baseless. She was safe, with all the soldiers around? He forced the thought from his mind, turned off the lamp on the bookshelf where so many memories where held, and walked out of his office.

No staff members strolled the halls; no doctors peeked into co-workers windows, seeing if they wanted to go out for dinner. The building was unexpectedly empty, except for one person, Dr. Jenner’s wife. Jenner negotiated the stairs with great ease, opened the door to the fifth floor, and strode quickly up to his wife’s office. As he opened the door, a wave of scent, like a pasture after a storm, about knocked Jenner back, he never got used to it. However, it was a welcoming aroma. The room was very bright, but comfortable and relaxed. You could sit down in a chair in that room and never get up.

Jenner walked kindly up behind his wife, wrapped his arms around her, and kissed her on the back of her neck. She responded by standing up and giving him a warm hug. “Ready to go?” Doctor Jenner inquired. “Yes, tired of this damned job,” she responded. “Ah, don’t say that, you know that our work here is valuable,” Jenner corrected. She smiled her sweetest smile. “Will you take me home? You are my husband after all,” she replied sarcastically. “Absolutely, we can pick up something on the way home if you don’t want to cook,” Jenner offered. She grins again and responds, “That would be excellent,” she replied.

As the couple drove their way out of the parking garage, and turned onto the street next to the garage, they were shocked at what they saw.
