Sari,

A colleague of mine in Chernarus wrote me today. He had a curious patient at his clinic in Zelenogorsk. He told me the man had been bitten while hunting in the woods. The description of his assailant bordered on pathological delusion. In his moments of near lucidity he would rant about dead men, broken limbs, decapitations, and all manner of illusion. Psychiatry was consulted but the poor man’s condition took a turn for the worst, requiring a second surgery on his bite wound which was decaying at an alarmingly rapid rate. The cultures are still pending, but my friend invited me to come take a look if I am free. Jerry can take over the clinic and our patient census is low so I could probably get away for a week. It helps to be married to your career. The wife says yes. I’ll email you my patient notes if you’re interested. If the patient doesn’t make it, I’ll send you Zelenogorsk ID’s findings.

Sari,

I’m here at the airport north of Zelenogorsk. I haven’t heard from my friend (sorry, he doesn’t want me to use his name, government officials have been crawling all over him since yesterday). He sent me a text before I boarded my flight this morning. He just said to hurry if I wanted to see the patient alive. He is going quickly. He sent a note in a file labeled “recipes”. They amputate one of his gangrenous limbs yesterday, but it appeared soft tissue across his body was rotting in a very odd way. It appeared dead, but pathology noted increased mitochondrial activity and cytoplasmic restructuring. I’m very interested to see them in person. Given your research into novel cell differentiation, I thought you might like to see as well. Just be ready to skype in later. Message you later, there’s a cop coming over. We’ve been stuck here for hours and I need to find a taxi.

Sari,

This shit is crazy. I didn’t even get out of the airport before they boarded us onto one of those commie b-52s or whatever. They flew us out and I had to spend 5 hours up in the air with webbed seating crawling up my ass and some weird guy’s knee between my legs because he sat literally a foot in front of me. Never fly military. I’m sure you’ve seen all the news by now. I’m OK, but ironically coming here means I’ve probably seen less than you. This girl named Natalia is going to help me by boating me onto the south coast. She was on her way home when she got turned around but her mother needs the meds she bought in Canada. Don’t worry, her whole family lives down there and she assures me we’ll be safe. They have some kind of local makeshift militia. Sounds kinda crazy but I want to see if I can help ID this infection. Maybe I can help on the ground. Stand by for some data. I gotta go now, saving my battery. Don’t know if there will be power.

Shit here’s fucked. Natalia’s dead. We landed. She was dead but ran at me whole fucking village. Hiding, prolly Cherno, but don’t know. Don’t read Russian. Check mail tonight. Gonna try for zeleno and see notes/slides. I’ll be ok. Army training, mebbe can find gun. It’s soviet after all. Haha. Saving battery. Love you.

Sari,

Please email me back if you are still out there. I found a charger hooked up to a generator in this dirty little town. I've spent the past couple weeks running mostly. My battery died three days ago. Until now I could only really use my phone to confirm my signal was still jammed. I don’t know why it works again but I can only assume the worst. With your expertise, I’m hoping the CDC has you holed up somewhere safe. I am on my last legs here, imagining you alive and well is one of the few things that keeps me going. Before the blackout I saw the infection was spreading. It must be everywhere now, but this is my site. I’m at ground zero and I’ve been trying to gather more information, but moving is hard. Surviving is hard, but I’ll manage. I thought these dead were the worst of it until I ran into a group of 3 survivors a week ago. They were hacking up a body. After what I’ve seen these first couple days it was nothing new until I saw her eyes and the fresh satin red pooling around her gaping chest wound. They sat around laughing the rest of the night. I couldn’t tell what they were saying until the youngest of them nervously removed his pants and mount her cold body to the encouraging cheers of the older two. Are we even worth saving? That kid was terrified when I saw the life leave him that night, his eyes popping out of his skull as I strangled him. But you’re a doctor not a priest. If we can figure out this damn thing maybe you can forgive me. Maybe I can too. If you’re still there, please write me. It’s getting dark here. I have to find a place to hide. This may sound weird, but it feels so evil here. Just wrong. I’ll check my messages in the morning. Please write.

Sari,

I only got a piece of your message from the 14th. It kills me to hear about Atlanta. I know it may be a long shot, but if you’re able to read this I guess you’re probably all right. I want to believe you’re reading this now. You should go find Jerry Caldwell in Savannah. He has this crazy bunker, well not so crazy now. I’m sure he’s there. I have to feel like you’re out there, too, and everything I went through to get this pc put together was worth it. Not sure who else I would talk to. I don’t even know how much longer the internet will last, there must be a slew of busy techies working nonstop to keep things going. I noticed all the porn is still around haha. Most of it anyway. At least we all have our priorities straight. I’m doing everything I can just to stay alive. I met another group about a week ago. They were more friendly. Maybe all the violent ones are killing each other off. Problem is they’re killing off everyone else, too. This group of five said they used to be fifteen. It’s better to travel alone sometimes. I helped them patch up some wounds and answered what questions I could. One of them is a type 2 diabetic, irony is the apocalypse diet has certainly helped with his blood sugar control. Isn’t that great? The cure for obesity is zombies.

That info on the virus you sent me really helped. I’ve designed an experiment to look into CD4 cell markers of immune patients. I’ll let you know if I can confirm HLAB27 on them, too. I took some samples of their blood and spent a few days making my way back to a lab I cobbled together north of the small coastal airport to the northeast. The samples were all shit by then since I had to take a detour. I have to move slowly when I do at all. It’s taken a while, but I’m starting to get the materials I need to actually get some answers. I don’t even know where I’ll find equipment to run a 2d gel. You wouldn’t believe how long it took me to find a microscope in this bleak, backwards, soviet throwback shit hole. Sorry, but I’m getting a bit tired of beans and canned pasta. I need a twinkie, a swiss roll, anything. This thing’s starting to overheat and I’m running low on gas for the generator. I’ll have to come back in a couple days if I scrounge up enough to run it.

Sari,

I will be out of contact for at least the next month. One of those zombie commies nearly ripped my arm off and it’s been hard to gather enough food let alone the fuel to run this thing. Elektrozavodsk is getting more dangerous, too. I have to time it if I want to get back here, or even get out. I’m going to make a try for the hospital for a sling and some NSAIDs. Hopefully I’ll be better in a couple weeks so I can get back to work. I haven’t been back to the lab since my last message. There are armed men still going around now. Not all in uniforms, but it’s like a warzone here sometimes. I think I understand how things went so bad so fast. We can’t help but pick the easier enemy, frail starved kids with a bag of warm pop take less bullets than the thirty tireless corpses shuffling through the aisles of the local 7-11. Please stay safe and don’t trust anyone you don’t know.

This was great, kept me entertained through the whole read.

Your use of Medicial Terminology was truly amazing, I actually understood some of it. If you do have the time, please keep writing these. You've got me hooked!

Thanks for encouragement. I'll keep adding on as I learn the story.

I like it when people incorporate real knowledge about various things, just like you did with your medical terminology. Also, I noticed you incorporated the server's canon, which was really nice IMO... keep it up!

Thanks Eluxa. One of my favorite zombie-related past times with friends is theorizing about probable disease vectors, natural history of the course of the disease, and histologic/pathologic changes.
