Can anyone give some advise on blocking off a door and making it lockable? Should I build a fence kit and make a gate?

Is there a better more compact/smaller way to achieve locking a door off?

afaik this is the best way to do it right now, we used to have moredoors mod for this exact reason but it was removed due to lag or something. big clunky gate is your best option lad

Thanks for your response. One more question, Is there a way to tell which way the gate will open and from what side before I put it down?

When you first choose placement for a fence, the inside will be facing you. Turn it 180 if you want to place it with the outside facing you
