Fast Travel Suggestion

Ever wanted to just meet up with your friends in-game, without having to sprint one direction for 45 minutes before you finally encounter them, just for them to logoff when you get there?

Have you just spent several days traveling around the map, to finally find a car, but lose it shortly after when you crash due to desync; how about after you log off for the night and wake up the next day to see it have been stolen, or perhaps an unannounced map wipe that caused it to be gone from your grasp?

We've all been there, and I am here today to suggest a mod that may solve some of those issues, and possibly more!

How It Works

image.png.d6762e61bf779c409ec5c725f9f97eeb.png

It's simple really, it takes three steps:

Step 1: You purchase a Fast Travel ticket.

Step 2: You find one of the six Fast Travel locations (map billboard) that are found at the train stations (shown above).

Step 3: You search for the place on the map billboard you'd like to travel to, and click the action key. Upon this action, it remove one Fast Travel ticket from your inventory. Then you're teleported.

My Suggested Location Placement

"Hey I know! Let's use the railroads and it's train stations as a method of travel!"

image.png.4543ed67858d599b060b85f030822929.png

Roleplay-wise (Reasoning)

I personally think using the railroads and it's train station locations to be a great way to provide a method of fast travel. Why?

* You'd expect despite all infrastructure failing, the railroads would still be accessible and used by survivors and groups.

* Using the Train Stations is a perfect roleplay explanation for in-character purposes as to how an individual got to another location, especially so quickly.

* It gives players an excuse to use their Rubles, instead of using them at Traders causing a massive amount of items to be spawned in and stashed away.

Locations and Why I Chose Them

* We currently have three traders on each corner of the map, along with an ATM.  In order to prevent people fast traveling to the traders easily I suggested the particular X locations to be at least 1KM away from any trader. This being said, the large train station in Svetlojarsk was bypassed as well any further railroad station that would eventually lead up to the ATM for easy access.

* I decided it'd be best if we stuck to the railroads that are parallel to the coast and outer cities. This forces players to stay near these areas to where player population are usually located. It also prevents players from easy access to military loot and private encampments, or nomadic introductions with those who prefer to solo out in the woods. That all being said, I would use the to place prefabs that show that the railroad is blocked off by debris (roleplay purposes) to prevent any further advancement to the railroads that are on that side of the map.

* Why did you skip Solnichniy? It's a small train station, that has a factory around it. There's no point of interests near it that'd you'd expect roleplayers to stick around for. Can any of us honestly say we stick around in the area near Solnichniy for more than a few minutes? Most go north to Berezino. It's a dead area of the map.

* Why did you keep Komorovo as a choice, it's a small train station? I chose it because it's a nice stop between the four nearby towns (Kamenka, Komorovo, Balota, Bor), and also 3.5KM away from the nearest trader. Of course, that being said, perhaps it should just end at western-tip of Chernogorsk like it originally was (caused by derailed train/destroyed vehicles, etc).

* Why not continue to Zelenogorsk from the south, and make that the end-of-the-line; it's a player spawnpoint afterall? I feel like Zelenogorsk, 'Green Mountain', 'Myshkino Tents',  'The Dam', 'Pavlovo Military' tends to be an area where a lot of conflict occurs, and I don't think it's a good idea to allow easy access to such an area to players. I also am not in favor of the fact that it's close to three military locations, and so happens to be near the western section (woods) of the map, where most nomadic players prefer to travel around.

Price for a Ticket

image.png.eddc33d39d95767e5acb5ccbcc80ff5b.png

So what is the right price for a ticket to get to the city you need to fast travel to? That's a good question, I will leave it up to our developers to find the right balance. I personally would like to see it to be between 100 to 250 rubles; this can be seen as the cost of a gun, a kit of medical supplies, etc. It's also what I'd expect the average player to carry, about 50 to 200 rubles.

In regards to obtaining the tickets, I am not entirely certain how the mod works exactly, but I was thinking if the Fast Travel Ticket is an item, it could be sold at every trader, or perhaps somehow at the train stations themselves. Another thought I had is you could loot them from Infected, like you can Rubles.

Rules

Of course, there's always some cons and/or complications to suggesting such a method of travel in our server. The combat rules specifically.

I would suggest an addition/amendment to Rule 4.5. That would state something that wouldn't allow Fast Traveling to occur for 30 minutes after a combat situation. If a group suspects an individual has broken this rule, they can have a game master pull up the logs to confirm it in a report.

Very well thought out and presented suggestion.

Idk if railroads would work still or not but this being a game, fun is #1 and running for an hour to meet your friends is not my kind of fun.

Suggested several times and shot down several times, it is not roleplay friendly to fast travel (railroad or not) For travel faster than legs I suggest a vehicle

-2 (just to beat Misho)

+1 for presentation though. So... -1 net. ?

I would love to use vehicles, but they're hard to come by, difficult to maintenance, and they aren't easy to keep ahold of (stash from view of players). Don't forget about the other little bugs and annoyances that occur because DayZ likes to be DayZ... It's just not worth the time or effort for a group, let alone a solo player.

For example as of recent:

  • Saturday - I had a UAZ truck, I stashed it out in the middle of nowhere and I logged out to find it gone the next morning.
  • Sunday - I had a gray Olga, I stashed it in a building in plain sight, it remained the next morning but someone ripped a wheel out. Living me stranded.
  • Today - I had a burgundy Olga, I drove it from the Civvy trader to Pavolovo, to have it instantly get destroyed when I was driving downhill. I guess the bottom fender of the front of the Olga caused it to collide with the incline of the ground.

Exactly. Quick travel shouldn't be guaranteed, you should have to work to keep + maintain the ability to travel the map very quickly (with the exception of bugs, which ofc. shouldn't happen) in my view

Yes, but they stopped. A new (one-man) team is working on it, so stay tuned... Q2 2021?

-1 I read your thread and I'll be honest, I'd vote in favor of it but we are literally a week or so away from switching to Namalsk ? Kind of pointless suggestion when you think about it BUT like I said, it's a well presented thread, interesting mod, I'd vote for it if not for us changing map soon for the winter. My advice? Keep that thread somewhere saved, at least the contents of it! Come back with it if we switch back to Chernarus after a while. ?

Nope it's time to switch to a smaller map and avoid this bad idea ?

For several reasons, I do vote yes on this one would be the locomotives are diesel-electric and should still work and two yes fun first, and I hate running.

I most admit that you are presenting the idea in a well thought through way. If we ever implement this, I think we should definetely look at this suggestion. The points you bring up, like for example the one where you cannot use the fast traveling while in a pvp situation, seem very good. Also having the fast travel network follow the railway system, makes a lot of sense in character.

However, I do not see the use for this mod right now and therefore voted no. This because we wil swap to Namalsk in about a week and this map is so small that fast traveling is not usefull there. If we swap back to Chernarus and numbers are low, we could reconsider adding this mod.

I personally would rather see more vehicles. People moan about how large the map is and elss interaction but if more cars were in place you still have that immersion of breaking down in the middle of nowhere and the realism of going to somewhere you need to be

There's a few problems with vehicles, OP addressed some of them but there's one major issue with it that's forgotten.

Even if there were 200 cars on the server, someone or some group would make it their mission to hoard all of them, just like everything else.

Anyway, Namalsk coming up next week so this probably wont be an issue for a few months at least.

Theres plenty of vehicles on the server, the issue is one or two people have like 20 cars and 6 choppers.

Would be a great idea tbh. Makes it easier to find the other 20 people on the server :trolle:

Jokes aside, add this pls.

Don't get me wrong, I love the presentation for this idea but no. While I love the rule you had suggested if this were to be added, what about if it was abused during a fight? Also not to mention what about those who fast travel accidently into a firefight? -1

Ehh. While I like the idea of fast traveling, I don't think it just quite fits here. Really wish that train mod was finished up, that would be a cool addition. But for now, this is a -1 for me.

I'd rather switch to a smaller map like namalsk.

I also think this could be abused by someone in a chase.

I can see a gear hoarder seeing a group of hostile players and immediately teleports to avoid their interaction because they're afraid of losing their gear.

As many have expressed I think this is an amazing idea, but too many things will need to be put in place for this to work on the server and no doubt the abuse it will receive by players in game. We just have to take into account, the amount of stress this will cause for the staff team, as in if they couldn’t see logs for people teleporting around the map. Also not to mention (again) the abuse it will receive with the gun fight situations and also running away from RP. As I stated at the start I love the idea and I think it’s a cool mod to say the least but I don’t think it has a place here.

+1 on the mod, but sadly we can’t use it here, but wouldn’t turn the idea down or feel some time of negative way if I saw it on the mod list.
