Upon the integration of the Chernarussian Socialist Republic into the Russian Federation in 2018, the newly found oblast was taken under the 150th Rifle Division of the Russian Ground Forces. The oblast of Chernarus, under Russian control, sent enough soldiers to the military installations to have a rather full garrison of the installations in the area. With the potential unrest, and known recent history of the region led the Russian military to send three separate battalions in the previous country of Chernarus, the 320th Motor Rifle Battalion being stationed in the immediate area of previous South Zagoria due to the higher chance of unrest in the province.

    The region of South Zagoria specifically was under the protection of the newly founded 320th Motor Rifle Battalion. A battalion of approximately 840 active military personnel and another 480 reserve personnel assigned to defend the military installations of the region. Each military installation in the region was assigned by a company that fell under the battalion, having been roughly 80 upwards of 120 men depending on the size and capacity of the installation.

    The newly founded Battalion were given a handful of veterans of prior occupied territories, as well as a majority of any Chernarussian nationals now serving in the military in hopes of deterring any national uprisings against the troops in the region. The top brass were very stuck on the idea of not wanting a repeat of the 2009 conflict.
 

    The local militants, as well as the Russian Ground Forces in the area, were occupied during the quarantine of the third wave of the infection, prior to the viral mutation that led to the zombification of those infected were in charge of handling checkpoints throughout the region. The country, as most in the world at the time, was under full lockdown. No one was allowed to enter or leave the oblast - and the military was in charge of making sure that happened.

By May 10th martial law was instituted, shutting down and forcefully removing and relocating citizens to government mandated evacuation and relocation camps set up around and near major areas of population. The use of lethal force was also authorized which was liberally applied to those deemed a risk to the public's safety, those who presented symptoms and those who posed a threat to the authority and sanctity of the armed forces.

On the 31st of May, the 320th Battalion, under command of battalion commander Major Arkadiy Fyodorov Ignatev, was given a distressed call to arms. An all-hands order was given, initially being told that all active and reserve personnel to report to their assigned garrison. The order quickly changed after the news of these bases being overrun by the infected got to the Major, in which Novodmitrovsk has deemed the new rally point for all units in the area.

A mix of unrest, confusion, and hysteria caused by the new outbreak of an unknown infection led to many soldiers to either die or go AWOL and defy orders to protect their loved ones. The order got out; those remaining in the battalion were to fortify the city centre of Novodmitrovsk and await further orders. Taking what supply they had at the closest establishment, they did what they could to contain the outbreak in the centre.

The survivors were mustered and assigned to their positions within the quarantine zone. They were establishing a safe haven for the survivors of the region to seek shelter. Prior to the rage mutation of the virus, the region - as well as most regions of the Russian Federation received an excess of viral test kits. They were not allowing anyone into the quarantine if there was any doubt of them being infected with the new virus.

    They awaited further command from the Kremlin and up the chain of command. Waiting day by day in hope of news of relief or vaccines; but neither was ever received.  Days went by, and the hopes and morale of the troops declined every day that passed.
