How far can certain characters go?

     So I was watching the guide to RP video for newcomers, and I was sorta confused. In the video, there was a segment where an attacker wanted to stab his hostage. Rather than *actually* stab them, they both acted like he stabbed the hostage. No stabbing was done. 

     Where my confusion comes in is with Cannibal characters and more violent characters. Lets say, for the sake of the example, that I was a cannibal. I meat a stranger who looks mighty tasty, and I want to lure them to a building or tie them up so I can kill / eat them. Or if I was a bandit, and my hostage wasn't being cooperative, or my character is just nuts and wants to hurt the hostage. In the rules of the server, it says that the attacker (me in this case) must try to keep their hostage safe at all times. I'm sure you can see where i'm going...

     In DayZ, people do kill or harm their hostages. If I wanted to be the character who is a people eater, how could I go about this without breaking the rules? Or if my bandit character doesn't feel that their hostage should live, how would they go about this?

     Currently, I'm playing as a *Lone Wolf* style character. My character is level headed, and not one to be a cannibal or bandit. However, for future characters I may want to do, how would I go about having to kill a hostage for the sake of my character's personality? Thx in advance!

You really need to read up the rules my friend.

Read rule 4.6. This covers executing a hostage. You can not kill a hostage for any reason unless its covered under 4.6. I want to eat them is not a reason.

 

If you have a hostage, you are allowed to torture them. Some people prefer to emote stabbing/punching, because you run the risk of actually killing the person if you use a knife and attack them, which would be an invalid kill.

 

Cannibals have to rely on coming across already dead players, or finding a player that uses the //OOC option in game chat to consent to the death of their character. As a cannibal, if you wanted to eat someone, you'd need to in game say something like that.
//Permission to execute you? 
And they would need to give you some form of
//okay
Then you've covered your ass and won't get a slap for invalidly killing someone.

Tbh, that video is rather outdated and perhaps we shall get a updated guide soon ...

So right off the bat, you can use what we call Emoting.

Emoting is where you type in text chat what actions you are attempting to do. Try not to powergame though by saying *He cuts off the mans finger* and instead offer leeway, *He would ATTEMPT to cut off the mans finger with a knife.* //permission to remove a finger?"

For cannibal characters you have to be a little creative, ask to take cuts of skin or flesh or fingers or toes via emotes since you can't just kill the person while they're being compliant in order to actually eat them physically in the game. 

Also; Kill Rights are things that you really have to pay attention to when and where you gain them and can use them. If you run up to me, tell me to put my hands up and walk into a shed and I do all these things you cannot just shoot me now because you're a evil man and you want to. You have to provide me with RP and safety as per the rules. Remember, RP is a two way street. What if I don't want to die to a cannibal but you kill me anyways because you want my supple hooman flesh. Where's the fun in that for me? I don't get anything but a YOU'RE DEAD screen and all RP had ended on my side. Kinda lame...

But, let's say you ask me instead in OOC //Permission to execute you? and I say //yes, then you have rights to kill me as I have given them to you. This isn't a PERMA kill of the character but a IG kill of the player avatar. If you want to PERMA kill a character so they are never alive ever again, you have to specify that. //Permission to permakill you/this character? and I have to agree //yes.

If you have more specific questions it may be best to pop into the Help Desk in Discord and ask a Staff Member, hopefully they can walk you through some scenarios!

As far as I knew I had read the rules fairly well. I know that this is mentioned in the rules, but I became confused when I thought about characters such as cannibals. I was just curious how far that rule goes in a situation like that, which you've explained quite well. tyty

Like Rover said, best case would be to ask them

"//Permission to cut off your finger?" etc

The "//" means you are talking out of character and you must always ask permission in this way before you permanently scar another character. Whether that be dismemberment, execution, breaking bones, or cutting deep enough to leave a scar, anything under that umbrella.

Now if you gain execution rights over that hostage, you can kill them and theoretically eat them, though it can be seen as bad RP, given whoever you executed may or may not PK or permanently kill their character. That gets into a lot of theoretical so best to talk to the person OOC in Discord maybe after the execution to ensure they're going to PK.

If the story line you're going for keeps to lone wolf and you don't wanna deal with OOC and Discord, I personally would not name drop whoever you killed. That again is if you have the right to execute someone, and do so. If you eat them, don't say you ate "Character name", just say you ate a random survivor.

This all may be a lot to consider so never any shame in asking our Mentor program linked here for some guidance if you're struggling still with the rules. Feel free to stop by the Discord anytime for discussions and so forth or if you want, we can assign you your very own mentor to help you out along the way. Better to ask for help then end up in a report!

I see... This answers my question then! I'll make sure to ask someone if they want to die before I kill 'em lol. Thx for the responce!
