How much is too much? (Gear Discussion)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

Recently I've been trying to cut down on my loot hoarding instincts. With one of my current characters I am trying to play nomadic and run pretty light with a smaller backpack. Currently, I am running with a bunch food and a few random rare items that I'm aiming to trade. Along the way to this I've had to throw out a bunch of junk that I realised I didn't need or could easily find if I did.

Just wanted to see how much gear people generally run with comfortably, food/medical/ammo etc.

I tend to get paranoid that I'll start starving in the middle of some good RP, and as a result I'm dragging around enough food to keep me going for a week. Feels dumb.

TIA.

Depends on the character, I generally like to run with either a simplistic backpack / no backpack, loose clothing, no vests, shitty guns.

I don't like to run 3000 rounds for various guns, big ass backpack and military top to bottom, gives people a reason to rob you.

Usually tend to run with rp items and a few rounds of ammo. Best way I combat hording is to eat all the food I find asap so I won't starve while traveling and I don't touch any ammo or guns I know I won't use or find (unless it's trade worthy for a good price ?)

Also ^^^ what crescent said the less stuff that looks robbery worthy the less you'll care if you do happen to get robbed

How do you sustain yourself? How often do you need to hunt and scavenge?

I tend to focus more on the aesthetic than the actual carrying capacity.

If you're playing a nomadic character I can recommend any combination of civilian clothes coupled with the new Windstride Canvas Bags, they are very decent and look visually pleasing.

Also pins are nice.

As for hunting, killing a deer or two will usually net you a good backpacks worth of food, as long as you keep yourself from sprinting (AKA jogging at a regular pace) you should have no problem staying fed.

Continuous sprinting depletes your food and water levels very fast, the less you sprint the longer you can move around without having to re-energize.

Weaponwise, there are plenty of civilian weapons that will suit your style, lower caliber automatics and sporting rifles are plentiful

My character vibe is essentially a greying old somewhat senile Bear Grylls-esque SAS veteran. Green raincoat, camo BDU pants and black boots are the basic look and ideally I have a field vest and small(ish) olive backpack as well. Primary weapon I aim for is the MP5. I'm trying to go for a non PVP focused military style with lower tier kit to deter thieves a little at least.

Atm i feel like i'm carrying too much. M4 and M417, both 2 mags each w/ spare ammo. Plate carrier, simple improvised backpack, food and drinks. I'm more likely going to drop one of the guns at some point in time.

I never eat, food is for the weak.

No, fr. I kill anything I find whether it be a chicken, elk, bear, wolf etc. and the obvious of tinned food or loose fruit which I tend to eat straight away.

This is my usual load out

Courier bag - food

Combat pants - pocket MP7, some ammo

Hoodie/gorka jacket - ammo, supplies

Plate carrier, Russian plate carrier or ballistic vest

Shitty ass weapon on my back to make people think I have no REAL weapons.

If they initiate? Pocket MP7, If I die? Who cares? I had nothing really in the first place since most of the stuff I can regear in half an hour.

Depends alot on the character. I like to stick to civilian clothing when I am playing a character with no military experience. I usually carry a main weapon and a sidearm of some sort; usually an SMG. I like to have a small footprint as a character, yet make them distinguishable. I usually wear the same stuff on my character clothing wise when I have constructed a recognizable look.

The look for my main character Aslan is:
South Face Gorka jacket
Blue jeans
Green baseball cap
Green face shemag
Hunting boots

Everything else in situational. I find a consistent look helps a lot with recognizability. People are able to tell that it is me when the see me.

Lootwise, I keep plenty of food on me, and then probably 1-2 mags spare for my guns along with a bit of loose ammo. Basic tools and other necessities like duct tape or sewing kits. Other than that, I rarely trade, so I don't tend to pick up random stuff that I think might have value.

If I can get around not having to wear a backpack at all, I usually will. Belts and pouches are way more favorable to me. It limits me from carrying too much junk around.

I try to use gear that would make sense for my character. For example, as a veteran of the Soviet military, my character trained and used the Kalashnikov series as well as rifles such as the Mosin-Nagant, so I try to stick to those. Of course, there are examples of my character using western weapons; but that is usually when he feels that he likes the feel of that weapon. For example, if he had an AK-74, he would switch to an FAL (who wouldn't), but since he'd use the FAL for a while before getting a better Kalashnikov such as an AKM, he may decide to stick with the FAL.

In terms of clothing, my character hasn't been in the military for 40 years. So he wears civilian clothing. I prefer not to wear plate carriers or battle belts unless I have a lot of stuff to carry, since it makes more sense for my character to wear more civilian to police level vests.

Ultimately, as many have said before, it depends on the character.

Tip for food:

Eat everything you find. You can store a lot more food in your stomach than you think, reducing your need to eat in future.

If you want, you can keep a tin of something in your bag to give to someone else if your character is that sort of person. Besides that, eat everything you find as soon as you find it.

Gun, couple mags, melee weapon. Usually 1 backup can of food as emergency. I usually don't wear a bag so kit is limited.

If im not dual weilding M249s then wtf is the point in life.

Im joking. Usually a main gun, hidden gun (mp7 or something small in clothing), Pistol, ammo and mags, bit of food and water + medical supplies.

I mean right now, I’ve just got mostly food.  I don’t even have a rifle or anything of that size gun wise—someone gave me a Makarov a week ago and that is what I use in emergencies.  Otherwise it’s the axe or shovel on my back.  Clothing wise it’s a bomber jacket and ripped jeans, and then the sling pack I found, so storage space is limited.  I don’t feel like baiting a robbery so I probably won’t get a bigger gun.

Punching chickens is how I survive =P
or shoving an axe in a wolf’s face.  That’s always fun.

I used to carry a pocket MP7 before I never found the bloody things again.

I run around wearing standard civilian clothing and a shitty, dinky peashooter of a weapon called the MP5.

I don't get robbed, and if I do - what are they gonna find? My medical supplies?

PLEASE

My character is not a military man so he runs around in civilian clothing.
I carry just the necessities like a few cans of food, water and bandages.

I carry a shotgun and an Mp7 in my bag, a little ammo and if I get robbed so be it, I'm not loosing much and it doesn't affect anything.

I take what I own in real life and what I find practical into account while looting.

For example, I own an M65 jacket in real life, and I would probably take it with me if an outbreak were to happen in real life. Lots of pockets, mostly waterproof, plenty warm, and really comfortable, which Is why I wear it on even civilian characters. I think if you end up carrying multiple rifles, you're overlooting. If you're carrying hundreds of rounds of ammo and don't plan to trade or get rid of them in any way, you're overlooting.

Want to know the god honest truth?

All I need is a good pair of wellies, not the fake brand ones, and some capris aswell as the odd Double barrel shotgun. Anything else I carry is extra, I carry cos of convenience.

Oh and I carry a nice boiling hot bowl of stew that I get from the lovely soup kitchen.

Highly depends on your character. But do like most, carry 1 or 2 cans and a bottle of water.
You don't need 500 rounds off ammo, and 4 nades and CQB, Mid range and long range rifles.

If you're hungry you usually have a friend or two to leach from?
Stock up and continue ?

At the end of the day it's situational, depends on the environment and of course.. Your characters lifestyle/habits/personality etc....However, When the natural survival instinct kicks in you may act and do things like a different person, when you are about to go on a hunt or you are in a place that has constant danger those 500 rounds are important, even more so if you consider ammo a form of currency.... Some people hoard food, Some weapons...Some go insane and hoard skin or something....For those in poverty, excessively stockpiling possessions can act as a link to a more prosperous past or insurance for a difficult future.

perhaps look at real life people who are homeless, squatters who are living in ghost towns and abandoned buildings or countries that might as well be considered apocalypse worthy...They HOARD and LAYER gear like no tomorrow.. They have real life tent stashes in the woods and buildings with trash bags FULL of clothes, improvised weapons, tools and other crap they consider important to their survival... DayZLARP without even trying. On that note, Just about every hunter or outdoorsmen i know, see or read about love military gear, Guns, Survival gear and so forth...If shit were to really go down all the office dwellers will most likely die while those who endure a more rugged life, and i have to say...even those who read/watch/play survival media/games have a higher chance of survival... so seeing an abundance of people in military gear in game makes complete sense in my eyes.

People who go on long hiking trips or extended outdoor expeditions have packs full of survival equipment and huge hiking backs
im seeing people in my state in the US walking around with gas masks on because of whats going on in china so my view on people wearing gas masks all the time in game has def changed because your in a damn apocalypse with rotting zombies and dead bodies everywhere...the smart thing would to always have some type of face cover right? getting sick in a world gone to shit in a death sentence.... I personally never found it to be "Bad-RP" or overkill in any way to be decked out with gear or weapons because chances are if we were all in a real life dayZ....we would be killing eachother and searching for quality gear to protect us from the elements and the dangers that exist...

The way my character sees it is the people who walk around with casual clothing must be a part of a settlement where it's comfortable and safe enough to be lightly protected and those who walk around with their homes on their backs are the loners, wanderers, exiles or those who have yet to find that comfort.

[Note: sorry if this seems thrown together, It's because it was..multitaksing ATM.]

Normally I run just with the normal like guns and ammo for said guns. Also just some RP stuff for my character and of course food.

I base it of my stamina bar. If my stamina bar is below half way. I tend to get rid of things. Or else it limits your inner instincts as a monkey and makes it incredibly harder to climb things.
