Background
Dominic is a stranger in a strange land. He had been in Nyheim on vacation with his fiance, who wanted him to meet her Grandparents before their wedding, and before they passed. They were lucky to even make the trip. Global News spoke of outbreaks happening around the world. Dominic was positive he wouldn't be granted the time off from his job as a Deputy Sheriff in the small town of Beeville, Tx. Dominic and his fiance arrived in Nyheim on Sept. 16, greeted with open arms by her grandparents. The next several days were spent in bliss as Dominic got to know his new family. He was captivated by Nyheim's beauty. He almost wished they would not have to leave. On Sept. 21 he found out they wouldn't be allowed to.
The 4 of them did their best to survive under the new rules brought on by this pandemic. Unfortunately by December, Dominic's soon-to-be grandparents fell ill. He and his fiance did what they could to care for them. One night while the PLIKT message played over the town speakers, Dominic and his fiance heard noises coming from her grandparent's room. A thud, and then a whimpered out, muffled cry of, "NOOO!" Dominic rushed up the stairs and saw his future grandfather bent over the bed with the blood of his loving wife pouring from his lips. As Dominic called out to the bleeding woman the grandfather turned to face him, as if he had forgotten about his previous victim. He lept at Dominic and they rolled down the stairs landing in a tangled pile. Surprised by the commotion, Dominic's fiance lept up in an attempt to help her grandfather up. The moment felt like an eternity. Dominic watched as she grabbed her grandfather and helped him to his feet. The faster he tried to move the slower he felt. It was like trying to throw a punch in water. He could not will his body to act any faster, and he watched as her grandfather turned his head and sunk his teeth into the shoulder of his granddaughter. Dominic grabbed the monster as he got to his feet and began punching him. He kept swinging until he could no longer raise his arms, and the old man he was growing to love was unrecognizable beneath him. As Dominic crawled over to his fiance who was shaking and pale. She was crying and unable to force out her words. Dominic began trying to dress the wound, but in the middle of his efforts, his fiance stopped him. With her last breath, she whispered, "I love you, " touched his face, and faded away.
Before Dominic could even begin mourning the loss of his fiance, he heard a growl and saw her grandmother come shuffling from the bedroom to the top of the stairs. She descended in a full sprint for Dominic as he met her grasp. They wrestled over his fiance's body for a few seconds, then they toppled over the coffee table and landed on the floor of the living room. Dominic struggled to keep the gnashing teeth away from him as the grandmother growled and snarled on top of him. He finally managed to grab a leg of the broken table and smash the old woman across the temple. She went limp in his arms. Dominic pushed her off of him and sat up. He stood up, and as the weight of the last few minutes began to wash over him, he heard another growl coming from the stairs. Dominic turned to see his beloved staring back at him through narrowed eyes. There was something primal in her look that was unsettling. He spoke her name through the tears, not expecting a real response. When she came for him, he did not hesitate.
That night, Dominic packed a small number of supplies and started off. Being careful to avoid anyone and everyone, he made his way out of the city and onto the road. He now had no one, and nothing to rely on but himself. He doesn't know the language, he doesn't know the country. He is a stranger in a strange land.
