Background

I was born in sunny Los Angeles, California to a Father in the Navy and a stay at home Mother. I have a brother who's only a few years older than I, and for the most part we always got along pretty well. We had mostly the same interests, which made it easy to get along. Life was great, I had plenty of great opportunities growing up due to my Father's career, and I'm thankful for the life I had growing up. Every since I was little I always had a few interests that never changed; Medical, Military, Motorcycles, and Firearms. When I was 18, my Brother and I decided to both get motorcycles so we could ride together, and man was it great. Nothing quite gets your adrenaline rushing like going 110 down the freeway. One day my Brother and I were out on a ride, and a car decided to pull out in front of my unexpectedly, sending me flying forward onto the asphalt, landing on my back. Even with full gear on, I still got tore up, I had a huge gash stretching all the way across my lower back and needless to say, my bike was ruined, that may have been the worst part.

After my accident and realizing how many motorcycle accidents there are in the world, I decided to get some basic medical knowledge should it ever happen again, so I did what I thought was best and became a part time EMT. Doing that was great, don't get me wrong but I needed something else, I needed to do something I'd always wanted to do, so I enlisted into the United States Coast Guard, and got quite a good job as an ME; Maritime Enforcement Specialist. Training was intense, but man was it thrilling. I loved it.

Unfortunately, just 2 years in while doing a "routine" boarding on a drug smuggling boat, the occupants decided decided to pull on my team of 5, and it got hairy. Shots were going off everywhere on this tiny boat, someone was bound to get hit. And of course, that someone would be me. In the midst of everything I felt the burning sensation in my lower abdomen. Once everyone was secured I look down and sure enough, a pool of blood coming out of my stomach. I was given an option after I healed; stay in, or get out with full benefits. I made the difficult decision to remain Active Duty, and continue my deployment. But before I returned, I wanted to take some leave with my brother.

In late May/early June my Brother and I decided to take a unexpected trip to this place we'd heard stories of; Chernarus. The war was over, apparently rebuilding was going well, so we thought we'd go see what it was like, maybe experience something new. We flew into Miroslavl and made the drive from there to Chernarus. Our first impressions weren't that bad. A lot of farmland, small houses and tight knit communities, only a few big cities. The rebuilding seemed to be going well, we could tell there was a lot of construction. Late one night I was making a grocery run, while doing so I got turned around at a checkpoint, which I found odd but I thought maybe it was just a curfew thing in this country. So I went home and got some sleep. When I woke up I was tagged in a video from my mother saying “Have you seen this?!?” I clicked play and it was a Russian helicopter flying into a base set up. I didn't personally think much of it and just went about my day. Nothing abnormal happened that day really, we just continued to sight-see, even saw some great mountains and cliffs that were absolutely beautiful.

When my brother and I returned home, we saw a lot of controversy on Twitter regarding that helicopter, but I still didn't feel it was a huge deal. I called my mother and told her we were gonna head off to bed, and that we'd text in the morning. We were set to fly out on the 14th, it was currently the night of the 9th, so we only had a few more days here. We quickly fell asleep, wanting to get enough rest for tomorrow. It couldn't have been much after 8am when I was awoken by a very loud explosion. I had no clue what it was, but it did not sound good and I needed to figure out what it was. So I told my brother I'd be home in a few hours, and went to see what I could figure out. I saw the smoke, you could even smell it, I wasn't breathing the same crisp air I had the night before, but rather a dense, smokey air. I could hear jets, every now and then I'd see one in the distance.

Days past and the noises continued, I couldn't figure out what was going on, but watching the news it didn't look good. There were checkpoints everywhere, the traffic was insane, we had to walk everywhere. It seemed as if the explosions, what were they, bombings? Were becoming more rapid. Was this the start of another war? We wanted to leave, we wanted to get out, but by the time we tried, all of the borders were locked up. I tried using my “I'm in the United States Military” card, but I'm not nearly a high enough rank for that. We were stuck. We called out mother one last time to let her know we were stuck here, but that we'd be safe.

And then all hell broke loose.

I came home one day from a small trip to see what was going on around out house, and my brother was gone. No note, no hints, signs, nothing. He was just gone. I noticed there were scratch marks on the door and walls surrounding it, as well as blood around the door frame. He had taken his bag, some food and water, and just left. Was he in trouble, being hunted, I had no clue. But I had to find him.
