Born one of a set of twins in 2045, Montgomery was raised in a rather hectic family. He was the second born of the twins, his sister Sierra Estella being the older twin. To add to their dynamic duo, they also had a younger brother by a few years. The Hagen’s mother was descended from British people who moved across to mainland Europe before the borders closed, and their father Norwegian by blood.
The twins had a very close bond with each other, looking out for one another when danger, or times of uncertainty, came, especially in the world they were born into.
The Hagen twins were raised in Nyheim, surrounded by the safe walls of the city, protected from the harms out of the outside world. However, Montgomery always hated being stuck in the city. He often snuck out into the woods surrounding Nyheim, against his parents' wishes once they found out.
Feeling protective over her ‘little’ twin brother, Sierra always followed suit with Montgomery when he snuck out to the forest to make sure he was safe. It was times like these where Montgomery learned to appreciate nature and what it provided to mankind, which he often thought people took for granted. Here was where his knowledge of botany and herbalism began to bud. As Montgomery snuck out so often, Sierra also began to develop an appreciation and fascination with nature.
Fascinated with nature and it’s healing abilities, Montgomery always took to reading old books about herbalism and foraging. Traditional medicine books were of his favourites, and he still carries some with him. The intensive amount of reading and studying he has done resulted in him having a very strong understanding of which plants do what, and what he could grow and breed into new plants to help people.
Growing up, Montgomery always went foraging for his family to bring back ingredients for cooking, as well as plants that had medicinal properties, such as willow bark or St. John’s Wort, his mother being able to make them into herbal remedies to help treat ailments. This helped him to develop his herbalist knowledge with a practical sense, as he actually made and used his own herbal medicines.
Montgomery spent a fair amount of time with his good friend Parker, the two often smoking herbal remedies together. The two were rather close until Parker left the city, Montgomery not seeing him for a long time.
As he grew older, he continued his development of various herbal medicines, selling them to those who needed them. Breeding hybrid species of plants that he created, he was able to market to a wider range of people with varying different ailments and illnesses. As medicines and pharmaceuticals of the old days became sparse and expired, more people began to seek herbal knowledge of people like Montgomery.
