They had bunkered up in the house. No one knew what was happening, only that they had gone from being just them to multiple families hiding out in their house. Many of them had lost loved ones. There were kids crying all the time. Some of Alina's school friends were there as well. It was extremely frustrating for her, as she barely understood the language.
Alina knew that if it came to it, she would have to be prepared to leave in a flash. She packed the most important things she could need in her bag, but kept her little tin box with information of her biological dad, copies of letters and some pictures of her family close.
With many people hidin out in their home, it was hard to keep up with those being uncareful. Those who lied about wounds and so on. One night Alina had stayed outside until the sun had gone down. She spotted one of the younger children run out of the house into a field, and she quickly ran after. After catching her, she heard screams coming from the house. Asking the child to wait, and hide in a bush, she ran back.
The images from inside the house had burnt itself into Alina's memory. Upstairs she had seen her mother and aunt dead and motionless on the floor. Some of the people were screaming in pain, others were bleeding out. But she quickly took note of the loud screetching noises coming from downstairs. It didn't take long before she spotted her uncle's bloody face, digging into someone at the bottom of the stairs. As soon as he saw her, he chased after her.
Alina managed to lock herself into her room. Grabbed her backpack and jumped out of the window. She injured her right foot in the fall, but kept going regardless. There was nothing left in that house. She quickly located the child she left earlier and they both went on their way. Alina carried the child through half the night until they found a place to hide out in. They both cried themselves to sleep.
About a week later, the child was killed by an infected as they were scavenging through a dead town. Alina blamed herself for that. She knew she couldn't stay, and when the infected had moved on, she ran and made her way towards the only family she hoped was still alive. Her biological grandparents.
Alina had gotten lost, but unknowingly had made her way into South Zagoria. She met a few people on the way, but she tried staying on her own for the most part, not wanting to watch someone slip through her fingers again.
