John's parents fled Chernarus as refugees late into the cold war, eventually settling in West Texas to work the oil fields. John's dad always was working, usually about 100 hours a week to support John and his sister. His mother was a saint. She was the type of mother who would dote over the smallest of injuries, which considering John's sister and he were always out exploring was quite often.
She would always tell John the most fantastical stories about their homeland, always painting it in such a heavenly light that John never understood why they left.
Everything changed when John was in 8th grade. With the events of 9/11 his sister was quick to sign up for the army. His family was assured that, because she was a woman, she wouldn't be on the front lines. So at first they were all fine with it, then they got news a couple years later that one of the Afghani guards at her base went rogue, killing her and a few of her squad mates while they were sleeping.
His mother took the news hard... she took up drinking and constantly berated his Father for not being around enough... until one night she went to the bar and came back in a casket, having driven off the road on the way back, going through a barrier and over a cliff.
As can be expected John's Dad didn't take it well. He quit his jobs and moved the two of them to Lubbock so John could finish college, focusing entirely on John's education as he took on more jobs than his health could afford. About half way through college John's father had a stroke, and John had to drop his classes to take care of him. A couple years later John had to move his father to an assisted living home as he degraded too much for John to realistically take care of him, so John went back to school while working what jobs he could to pay for the bills for his father's care.
John eventually had a couple relatives reach out to him concerned, or so he thought, and invited John to visit Chernarus so that, hopefully, John would not suffer what he knew was coming. that he'd have friends around to comfort him. Turns out the truth was his father had, while still lucid, contacted a lawyer and made him executor of his will, which included a clause that his brother be contacted to bring John to Chernarus in the event he became brain dead, and the plug pulled while John was away.
John was, naturally, devastated when he heard the news, however he wasn't told until after the funeral at his father's instructions. His Uncle and cousins did they best to console him, showing him around the country and taking him on the various hiking trails throughout the Summer. As the summer slowly drew to a close, they invited John back to visit once more during the winter to enjoy deer hunting with them, to which John eagerly accepted. However, unfortunately for John, he wouldn't ever get to return home, chaos quickly unraveling along the Northern border of the country, and before he knew it, John was stuck in Chernarus long term.
