Niko's mother, Evelyn gave birth to him in 1992, while on the run. She and her husband were fleeing from Bosnia and Herzegovina as the war started. She gave birth to Niko while crossing Livno. Through the years, the family has been moving from one place to another, one city to another. In 2001 Niko's father died from a shrapnel wound that got infected since they couldnt afford hospital treatment. He left her wife and her nine year old boy alone, without a roof over their heads. It took them a while to get back to their feet, spending most of their days on the streets. As years went by, Niko started making a wage, supporting his mother by all and any money he could earn while delivering newspapers. In 2010 his mother died by falling into an incorrectly secured manhole. He was left alone, terrified. Eventually he got tired of weeping over something that couldnt be brough back. He sold all of her belongings that he still had and took sail into an unknown direction.
