John was born to a poor family in the middle of Transylvania. He wasn't particularly smart, nor had any specific skills, yet he always wanted to learn everything and anything. He learned about hunting from his grandad by going on hunting trips and learned to live off the land. From a young age, he wielded the shotgun with grace and precision. His mom, who was a nurse in the Romanian army thought him about basic medical skills, from things like suturing a wound to basic information about antibiotics. Her hope was for him to go to med school but John wasn’t a big fan of book learning. He would rather spend his time running through the woods tracking wild game and dream of all the big adventures he would take part in when he would grow up. He never met his dad, since his dad disappeared in the big war but had he met him, John would have probably learned more about the intricacies of modern combat. But alas, John had to grow up without a dad and came to deeply dislike authority figures since he blames the government for sending his dear old dad to fight in a war that didn’t solve anything. Now he is all grown up and realized he has to make it on his own, and the only way to do it is to leave his small town behind and venture off in the most dangerous wasteland know to man where perils would await at every corner, and the guarantee of tomorrow doesn’t exist. Now he is all grown up and realized he has to make it on his own, but without access to proper information he never really knew what that future might be or if the opportunity would ever present itself. That all would change when a group of strangers was passing through his small village in the middle of nowhere and stopped at the local inn where John would sometimes spend his lonely evenings. They sat down at the table across from him and immediately caught his eye. They looked like military people, tall and muscular with old scars showing under the rugged clothing. Fascinated by them, he offered to buy them a drink and something to eat as they were looking exhausted. They invited John to sit down, and started telling tells of their travels to a place he hadn’t heard of. A vicious, dangerous place where good men walk in, never to leave and the ones that do, are only but a small piece of the men they were once were. As they were talking, all that John could hear was the challenge of a lifetime, a way to make something of himself, a way to reinvent his unremarkable person into something new, someone new. Someone that would face dangers and perils with ease and wake up to new experiences every day. He left the very next morning, armed with his old double barrel and an old knife.
