Born into a strict Catholic family in Northern Ireland from a young age he felt the aftermath of the Troubles as rivalled communities tried to bridge the gap and rebuild from the ashes of the conflict. His father, a strong critic of the British government used every opportunity he could to rant about their failings, praying for unification. Rumours of his involvement within the IRA during the Troubles were never confirmed but highly believed within their larger Protestant community, leading to them being outcasted by the majority of the community, resulting in undying loyalty to those few he could consider friends within their own Catholic community repeating the divisions seen before the Troubles. After he and his friends barely managed to graduate from secondary school the virus reached British shores. With the internet down and their only source being from a government they didn't trust to have their interest at heart riots once more took place within Northern Ireland with Alex and his friends at the forefront of most rallies, only resulting in a rather loss of life for as the virus spread through Northern Ireland at an alarming rate. The news of British treatment towards Canada's aid led to further escalation in rioting against what they saw as a tyrannical government.
