Background
John was born in Ottawa, Canada, but traveled with his parents for the majority of his life. In the early years of his life, he never felt he had a consistent place to call home, nor friends that he could hold for more than a few months. All of that changed when he lost his father, Arthur, in the Autumn of 2018 - The traveling ceased when they reached his father's hometown in Northern Ireland. For years, John along with his older brother Patrick looked after their grief-stricken mother, leaving their studies at University to start earning money sooner. They both joined a local garage working as mechanics, and things remained steady for a while.
In the summer of 2021, Northern Ireland appeared to be at a standstill. Lockdown was in full effect and the streets were empty, many places had to close down due to the virus, but the local garage was still open. Both John and Patrick continued their work, but so few people came in that it seemed redundant. Traveling through the towns of Ireland is usually quite serene thanks to the lockdown, but due to the actions of the British Government and the treatment of the Canadians, the streets became littered with picket signs, broken glass, and debris from neverending protests. Politics in Northern Ireland was delicate enough anyway, but this situation managed to reignite every past argument and conflict, turning streets into war zones and skyrocketing infection rates.
After navigating the violent streets, John and Patrick made their way back to their home, expecting to return to their mother still sitting on the sofa watching the news; She wasn't there. In this environment, even going to the shop was a dangerous venture, they had told her this before but she was a determined woman. They shouted around the house for her, but to no avail. John, with his eyes watering from nerves, grabbed his coat as Patrick grabbed their shared pistol and headed out the door, following their usual path to the local corner shop. They ran to the shop in complete silence cut by the sounds of their heavy breathing. They reached the shop and approached with caution, dawning their weapons as soon as they saw the broken glass in the door and the flickering lights inside - Something had happened here. They went inside, and there they saw in the Greeting Card aisle, their mother laying in a pool of blood beside a card reading "Happy 26th Birthday". They immediately fell to her side, inspecting her body, putting pressure on the stab wound in her abdomen, and trying their best to get her to wake. Before their tears had barely touched the ground, gunfire unleashed from outside as another riot was just beginning. John sat there motionless, covered in his mother's blood - His brother grabbed him and led him to the back exit before either of them could mourn their loss. She was dead.
Days passed and barely a word was spoken. John was numb but couldn't stop crying, while his brother was frantically pacing around the house and calling his wife, who was working at the WHO and was currently on assignment in a place called Nyheim. John stared blankly at the wall until the slam of a rucksack on his chest awakened him from his mind. "Get up, we're leaving," said Patrick. "Where are we going?" John replied with concern, "I need to find Anna, and I can't do it alone. I need you with me, John." Before he could even think or process this request, loyalty to his brother had launched him from his seat, putting on the rucksack and following his brother out the door.
It is now the present day, and it has been a while since John and Patrick landed in Nyheim. Days after arriving, they were separated when a group of bandits knocked John unconscious, waking up hours later all alone in the streets. Now, John scours the land looking for his brother, not resting until he finds where his brother is, or if he is alive at all.
