Jacob is a young Pathologist of the Cambridge University Hospital in the United Kingdom. Much of his life prior to Nyheim was spent studying various diseases as part of a research collective. Though he could hardly be called a top expert, his abilities were nonetheless impressive given his relatively young age. He stood out amongst his peers as a dogged researcher who sacrificed his personal life in favour of his work life; naturally this resulted in an almost complete lack of personal relationships outside of his close family.

This is perhaps the primary reason that it was easy for him to make the decision to fly to Nyheim in the days prior to the air traffic shutdown.

Jacob informed his family on the day he left, handing in his resignation at CUH and paying out the remainder of his student debt with what money he had left. He packed light for his trip, focusing mainly on materials that could assist him in his work. Whether that would ultimately be a good decision or a bad one, time would ultimately leans towards the former.

What he found in Nyheim was beyond even what he had expected, and it became abundantly clear to Jacob that he lacked many of the skills required to survive amidst the ever changing world around him. Though he had a passing familiarity with the operation of weapons and some general survival skills from his time in the Boy Scouts, he had to recognise the fact that caution and a heavy dose of luck would be the only thing between him and death.

Nonetheless, he was and remains determined to research the virus and to ascertain whether a cure is possible.
