Born and raised in Oslo, Nikolai would spend most of his younger years in the city and the surrounding areas until the years after his high school graduation.
At the age of 19 years old he would enter his mandatory military service in the Royal Norwegian Army, Brigade Nord, 2. Bataljon, Kavaleri Eskadron (Kavesk).
His time in the service would be spent in Skjold military base in Troms and Finnmark county, spending a year in the most northern regions of Norway.
During his time with the Kavaleri Eskadron of the 2. Bataljon, he would come to learn invaluable skills in camping and survival out in the wild.

He decided to stay in the military after his mandatory service, going through NCO school where he would get the rank of Sergeant.
Eventually he would leave his service and job in the military in favour of joining with the NorthStar company that was based out of Russia, where he would spend some time there before their went on their assignment in Norway
