He flipped the page in his grandfather’s book, his eyes were wide with interest as his grandfather pulled it out of his hands.
His grandfather would wave the plate of food in front of him, this was a common occurance, Kai didn’t eat much, mostly because of his intense, hour-long, reading sessions he would have.
He enjoyed living with his grandfather, he took good care of him and fed him well, he would help him with his homework and watch TV with him.
When Kai grew older he would still read often, quickly picking up an interest for medicine and biology. His true interest for medicine was ignited when his grandfather had a seizure on a dark November night, Kai desperately tried to help him before the ambulance could arrive. Kai lived in the hospital for the next few days, trying to see his grandfather as often as possible.
One day, Kai was awoken by a continuous, low tone, before he knew it, he was rushed out as nurses and doctors swarmed around his grandfather. He sat down in the waiting room and after a few hours, a nurse and a man in a lab coat sat down beside him and the female nurse put her arm around him as the doctor spoke “Kai… Your grandfather has passed away.” The man let out a sigh and awaited Kai’s response, Kai said nothing, still in shock.
Kai didn’t utter a single word that night, his appetite was gone for the next few days as he would simply sleep on the couches in the hospital, waiting to be sent to an orphanage.
He was sent to an orphanage after a week and still hadn’t uttered a word, he had started reading books again, as it was now his only escape from life. Kai was fortunate enough to have a room of his own, and would be home-schooled by a teacher he bonded very well with. That same teacher managed to get Kai to speak again, but he would only speak to his teacher and no one else. The next five years went by quickly as Kai kept studying medicine and biology, he wanted no one else to go through what he did, and dedicated his life to help people like him and his grandfather. When Kai graduated from Gävle University with a degree in Medicine and Biology, for the first time in his life, he felt accomplished, he wouldn’t party that night at his graduation, instead he kept working at a hospital that he had gotten an internship at, simply stating “Health comes before all, why celebrate while people are suffering?”
Kai had moved out from the orphanage and tried now to seek meaning in his life, at which point, he started meeting someone from Chernarus, Lisa, was her name. Kai and Lisa quickly got into a close relationship and Kai decided that he wanted to move back to Chernarus with her for a culture change. He managed to get an internship at a hospital in Berezino. The couple moved into a farmhouse by the outskirts of Berezino and lived there happily for a year, but it all started with a simple cold.
His partner Lisa had gotten a seemingly worsening cold, but Kai tried not to worry and stayed home to take care of her, it was then when they found out about the virus. Lisa showed all the signs of being infected, and Kai tried desperately to save her, remembering his grandfather, he would not give up.
Lisa’s condition worsened until she could barely speak, she gave Kai a soft final kiss before succumbing to the illness
He was alone again.
He buried his wife on a rainy wednesday. He tried to stay strong, and for the second time was reminded that no one should suffer like this. He would not give up, he would save people, he would help people and he would save this godforsaken place.
