Robert worked at a metalworking factory, managed orders of parts and screws for the assembly. He liked his work, it wasn't too stressful and he didn't have too much responsibility. He hated being responsible for things or others, he would never be able to be someones boss, the pressure was just too much and he screwed up way too often to be reliable enough.
He didn't think that the doomsday would come so suddenly. In the previous years he saw the media scare created around various diseases and viruses like bird flue or H1N1 virus, he didn't care much about that. He had no close family left after his mother died a few years earlier. The cousins and other distant relatives living on the other side of the country didn't really matter to him. He had a girlfriend he cared about a lot, but she cheated on him and left him for some other asshole a few months back.
Robert was then a loner, living all by himself with no pets, having a boring but steadfast job where he didn't have to interact with too many people and he had no close relationships whatsoever. Robert liked that though, the sense of freedom and being able to leave a whims notice, being able to do anything you want at any time. It was probably this fact that saved his life.
When the disease really broke out in Poland it was mass panic. While others tried to save their families, burdened by their loved ones, trying to get them into the cars and being stuck in endless traffic jams, Robert had a getaway kit ready, jumped on his bicycle, left his apartment and didn't look back despite the screams and shots. For weeks he escaped the infected, evading them through forests and by camping. He lived off what he could find in abandoned houses and fruits or vegetables he stumbled upon.
He travelled east. He knew that the west part of Europe has such a large population density, he was much better off heading towards the vast and open plains and tundra of Russia. To avoid confrontations, he wanted to travel through Ukraine and Kazakhstan, as that route seemed to be least popular in his mind. The travel through Ukraine and Russia was hell, constant criminal, mafia and bandit groups hunted down travellers. He evaded them as long as he could and it all worked according to plan for quite some time, until he got ambushed by a criminal group south of Volgograd. They attacked him while camping and took all of his belongings and injured him in the process.
Lying on the forest floor looking up, beaten and resigned he just wanted to die. He had enough of constant fear of being found by criminals or bandits, having to evade the infected and their deadly grip every second he was scavenging for food, being constantly hungry and fighting for survival. He didn't have to protect anyone or fight for any cause, why was he doing all this? He needed a change of plans. He is never going to make thousands of kilometres through Kazakhstan like this. What's the closest and least popular place he could settle down, where nobody would try to hunt him down? Ukraine and Russia were full of hostile people, who were more of a threat to an individual than clumsy and slow infected.
The source. Of course, why would anyone go to the source of the infection. The country of Chernarus has been completely devastated by the Russians and civil war, surely there can't be anything good to be found there. But it also had low population, maybe the infected won't be that big of a problem as they were in other countries? First, he had to get away from where he currently was, there were far too many bandits around. He headed south-east, towards the northern border of Chernarus, hoping to settle down in a cabin in a forest somewhere. The plan was short: get out of here.
After a long and difficult journey he arrived in Chernarus and settled in a cabin near Grozovoy pass. For 2 years he lived there, learning to hunt and shoot, watching from a far the increased amount of people roaming the area. He came to accept that all these people who came from all over the world had the same idea as him. He came to accept it that there was no escape from the apocalypse. To this day he continues to roam the northern part of Chernarus, avoiding confrontations by all means necessary.
He continues to survive.
