David Penney was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1967. Sheltered as a child, he never got out of the city much through High School. Even in college, he opted to attend Ohio State University majoring in Professional Flight. It was during his time in college and zipping around the mid-west in a small training airplane that he was inspired to travel the world. As soon as he graduated and met the legal requirements, he started a job with a regional US airline. As so many in this profession do, he spent only 5 years with this airline as a stepping stone towards his main goal: Long-Haul routes with a "major".
David started a job with a major US airline in the spring of 2000, the year before the attacks in New York that brought the aviation industry briefly to it's knees. He spent another 5 years doing short interstate hops, but it was hard to complain. Dating had been tried a few times, but it never really worked out. When you are constantly on the road, even for short trips, relationships can be difficult to maintain. There was a 3-year on-again-off-again fling with a company Flight Attendant, but he learned his lesson with dating coworkers.
Since August 2005, First Officer David Penney has been on a variety of international routes with his company. New York to London, New York to Dublin, Austin to Cancun, Los Angeles to Sydney, and his last route was Miami to Oslo. Though he never remained on a route long enough to upgrade or have any real seniority, he enjoyed 16 off-days per month where he use his travel benefits to see other foreign locations.
He was on one such excursion when the sickness happened. Expecting three days to see the Norway for the umpteenth time, he ventured north towards Nyheim. He had only arrived in the city when news started to break of a pandemic and his airline notified him that his return flight had been grounded. He was stranded in Nyheim during the lockdown and has been in the area ever since, mostly keeping to himself.
