Born in May 1989 in the Norwegian city of Trondheim to a family of doctors, Hans Derringer was a man who was destined to follow in his parents footsteps. Both of his parents decided it best to move themselves and a young Hans to the tiny town of Fleseland, where they raised their son in the ways of medicine; starting with showing the boy how to use natural remedies and herbs to heal people.
After school, he left his parents to pursue medicine in Trondheim, where he finished his degree on time. However, while he was there, he picked up a nasty habit at university: that of a morphine addiction. His addiction slowed down after the death of his friend via a morphine overdose, however it escalated after his parents died in a horrific car accident shortly after he graduated.
After graduating and mourning the loss of his parents, Hans pursued further studies in medical microbiology. He decided to attend a university in Chernarus, specifically the University of Severograd. Even though the country was still coming to grips with the violence that the civil war had brought, the move and transition from Norway was pretty smooth for Hans. With him starting his new degree at the university, Hans began making some new friends. Things were going well in Severograd, he was in his third year of study and things were good. There were some border tensions between Chenarus and Russia, however this was soon to be the last of his worries.
Due to the border troubles, Severograd began getting an increase in refugees from the affected areas of the country. The city started filling up, and the police and army were struggling to maintain stability. However, a week after the disputes started, something more pressing and worrying gripped the city’s attention. Hans was out with some friends at a restaurant one night and were having an amazing time. However this was cut short by commotion on the street.
Shouting and screaming were coming from bystanders, who were all running past the restaurants window. One of Hans’ friends decided to go outside and investigate the commotion and report back the group, however as soon as he got out the door he was tackled by a horde of zombies and eaten alive in front of everyone. This set in motion a chain reaction inside the restaurant, as people began screaming and attempting to flee, which ended up allowing the bloodshed to spread inside as more people got bitten. Frightened and confused, the group of friends escaped through the kitchen and out through the back door. Fearing for their lives, they all jumped into an abandoned ambulance and rode off. After escaping the initial horror of the restaurant, they all agreed to attempt to get a hold of family members. they opted for going past each house individually
They quickly learned, however, that the city had started to become overrun by these zombies. After attempting to get to some of the families, they soon find themselves face to face with the horrors of this new world. They find one of the group’s fathers dead from suicide in their family home, while his corpse is being devoured by his mother. They dispatch of the mother and raid the place for supplies, where they head off; all agreeing to flee the country for nothing is left for them here.
They make their way towards Russia, however after a few days of helping survivors they begin to run low on supplies. This prompts the group to try a daring raid on a town store, where unfortunately three out of the five meet a violent end. Hans and the other sole survivor carry on their journey, however shortly before crossing the border into Russia the two get ambushed by a group of survivors.
After putting up a bit of a fight, the ambushers kill Hans’ friend and take him hostage. After some negotiating however, he manages to strike a deal with his kidnappers for his life. In exchange for morphine and sparing him, he would provide this new group with medical care. They agree, and this relationship lasts for a number of years while they roam around. However, shortly after the group is ambushed and killed off by a horde of zombies.
However, fortunately for Hans he picked the right moment to sneak out to steal some morphine from the supplies, as he is outside when the group is ambushed, thus allowing him for a hasty retreat into the nearby woods. After wondering around for a few hours, Hans had stumbled across an old abandoned log cabin. Once he introduced the locked door to the butt of his gun, he found himself in a full stocked log cabin with the previous occupant lying in the corner of the living room with a blown up skull and a gun next to them.
Hans camps out in the log cabin for a couple months longer without having to venture out for supplies, however supplies are soon running out. Now Hans finds himself once again having to brave this new world in the name of survival.
