Enlisted in the U.S. Army at 18, and quickly found himself stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina after Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training for the Signal Corps (25U). As a specialist in the 82nd Airborne, his Company was pulled for special assignment at the start of the outbreak to provide security for the local United Nations humanitarian aid in Chernarus.
As time went by, supplies ran thin, and when communication to higher echelons became unreliable, many thought the states to have abandoned them. Infighting and unrest within the UN post led to a security breech with the infected. As the base fell to the infection, Johansson , the sole survivor, panicked and ran into the wild in an attempt to flee the chaos.
He now scavenges to survive and attempts still to find a way to contact the United States to let them know he is still alive, with the faint hope of being evacuated from the ruined country.
Being in a foreign country, Nick is wary to trust others and because of his confinement to the UN post, he is unfamiliar with the landscape and is not well oriented to the country. He avoids group as a reaction to the insubordination and infighting that he saw his unit turn to before his post was overrun, however this is something that could change with time and exposure to others.
Despite being a Soldier, Nick is quick to avoid conflict and will do everything short of throwing aside his honor to avoid a shootout; his main goal is eventually to return home, and sees any unnecessary conflict as being detrimental to that goal. Being a true member of the soldier profession, he is an honest man and does not wish to rob/steal from others, nor take advantage of them, however he will do what is necessary/what he believes will help himself to get back home and protect those he may become close to. Being of a good nature, he will not stand by while others are abused if he has the capabilities to help, however is hesitant to place his own self at risk due to lack of any true combat experience.
