Dean White is a 20 year old British royal engineer or "sapper" stationed in Hannover, German when news of an outbreak had occurred in Chernarus had hit the mainstream media. The German and British army were concerned of the unidentified plague reaching Germany and stationed troops along the German-Czech-Poland border to prevent contaminated people from fleeing the country.
Dean was a part of this military movement and was stationed along the border and ordered to build defenses in preparation for angered civilians who were denied refuge in Germany. Months passed and eventually the Czech government reached out for assistance in containing the civilians migrating from Ukraine, and as such, Dean was yet again moved to the Czech-Ukraine border.
The border was overrun despite the precautions and defenses made by Dean and his platoon, they were forced to flee into Ukraine as the hordes of people and people who looked like they were decaying forced their way into the neighboring countries. The platoon moved further and further into Ukraine looking for any reminisce of military of civilian activity, but all they found was more bodies.
The platoon found an abandoned set of open back truck and used them to travel south towards the Black Sea. Upon reaching the sea, the now small band of men (as many of the platoon succumbed to the sickness and had perished) attempted to sail a small fishing boat away from Ukraine and towards a safer country. The plan was to sail across the Black Sea and attempt to reach Turkey to seek refuge and travel to Ankara to the British Embassy to figure out what has gone wrong. However as none of the men have ever sailed before, let alone with a boat made for fishing and with way too many people on board, the small boat capsized just as the men see what they think is Turkey.
Dean wakes up on the coast with his army fatigues completely ruined and with no knowledge of where he could be, all he knows is that the Black Sea is fatal to the untrained so he must travel north in search of any kind of refuge or traces of civilization and attempt to gain knowledge on where he is.
As Dean was in the British Army before he was stranded, he is able to use most firearms and wield a knife with great skill, however he may still need help identifying and operating unfamiliar firearms. As he was a Sapper, he's also able to build makeshift shelters and have basic survival understanding. Dean is a rational thinker and prefers to have a plan for most situations, he believes that there is safety in numbers and will attempt to locate people with the same moral standing as himself.
