Born and raised in the Netherlands, Mark van Dijk had an average childhood. While born in the city, he moved to the hinterland at a young age for his father's work. He had no brothers and sisters and was raised in a relatively liveral fashion, enjoying a lot of freedom with a lot of responsibility. School was alright for Mark. His grades were okay, despite the unholy mix of traits he possessed in the form of lazyness and ambition. The latter drove him to study politicology after high school, chasing his childhood dream to become a politician.

As the years of his university education came and go, life started to feel empty and meaningless however. The study lost its edge and sooner rather than later, his usual hobby's couldn't fill the endless void of boredom any longer. This made him to decide to leave it all behind for a while and go backpacking in Eastern Europe. Hungary, Czechia, Slowakia, Romania, Ukraine and finally Chernarus. The serene forests and rolling hills of the country did exactly what they were supposed to: Make him forget the outside world. With his phone left behind and his head in the clouds, he did not even realise what was happening in the world: The outbreak...

By the time he was making his way back to the airfield, civilization in Chernarus had all but collapsed. There were no planes anymore, no public transport, nothing. Mortified by the news that the undead had become the new masters of the land, Mark kept moving along the coast in an effort to find a ship that could bring him home. But with the days passing, this became increasingly unlikely. That is where he finds himself now. Tired, alone and with nothing but the clothes on his back, ready to fight for survival. Whatever that might mean...
