Jack grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland and led a simple life. Growing up, Jack made his way through school and got by. He eventually left school and wasn't sure what to do with his life. He ended up working as a miner. Physically, Jack is in good shape which helps with his work.
Although Jack wasn't overly ambitious at school, he was a hard worker and did what was required in his role as a miner. Eventually, his profession brought him to Chernarus.
Jack was sent to work in Solnichniy quarry in Chernarus. Jack had never really traveled besides the occasional holiday with his parents so the move was a little daunting. He missed home but the pay was decent so he tried not to let it bother him. Despite being foreign, Jack never had trouble socialising with the other miners. One of them in particular became a good friend, Anatoly Knyazev. Anatoly was a Chernorussian who helped Jack with the language and showed him around Chernarus.
Anatoly drove a Lada and offered to take Jack to show Jack around, including some of the major cities like Elektrozavodsk, Chernogorsk and Novodmitrovsk. He also took Jack to a few tourist destinations including castles & monuments.
During one of their trips, Jack noticed a growing military presence throughout the towns and cities including temporary camps as well as checkpoints. This concerned Jack but he tried not to dwell on it. However, Jack & Anatoly were stopped in Staroye by the police while crowds of people were running around in a panic. Before the police could explain the situation, one of the officers was attacked, Anatoly floored it but ended up crashing. Although Jack & Anatoly survived the crash, Anatoly was caught by one of the locals who was snarling & growling as well as bleeding from their eyes. The crazed local tore into Anatoly's flesh and became feeding on him. Jack's eyes went dead, he realised he had to run.
Jack managed to evade the remaining infected and retreated to the woods. He managed to make his way to the city of Elektrozavodsk... but... it was in complete chaos, buildings were burning, crowds of people were screaming and there was non stop gunfire. This was after the 11th, things had escalated quickly. Jack had enough sense to move on from Elektrozavodsk. He stuck to the trees and made his way back to the Solnichniy quarry.
When he arrived, the site was littered with corpses & blood. He walked amongst the bodies of his colleagues, his friends... then he started to think about Anatoly... his friend... a friend he let die. He was overwhelmed by his thoughts, what about home? What about his parents? Tears began to roll down his face until the sound of gunfire reminded him where he was and the situation he was in. He pulled himself together and went to his room in the mining barracks. He grabbed his backpack, some warm clothes and what little food he had and set out.
Jack wasn't really sure where to go or what to do, he stayed away from people out of fear that he wouldn't be able to save them. He couldn't lose another person. He had also witnessed bandits gunning down people for their supplies. Jack walked for miles through different hiking trails and forests, he picked apples from trees and berries from bushes to survive. If he was lucky enough, he'd manage to catch a chicken. Jack's parents had taken him camping a few times so he knew the basics when it came to sleeping outdoors. He would even go as far as tying himself to tree branches to sleep.
Jack never went near cities and rarely entered small towns or villages unless he needed something. However, Jack began to get lonely, he hated being on his own and missed the company of people... especially Anatoly. His loneliness began to outweigh his fear of losing people, in fact, he was developing a fear of being alone. Jack had enough. He decided to look for people, he started making his way through more towns. He could fight off the infected and had some weapons, he was determined to find people.
