Mickey was a dockworker in Belfast before all this. Couldn't be bothered to find a different job not because he was lazy, but rather he liked the job. Growing up in Kilkenny with his brother Murphy, Mickey never had a care for another person outside of his (blood and otherwise) family. "Keep close to your brother, and closer to yourself" is what their father always said.
At least for however long he was around. As it so happens, the McGewins had strong tie ins with the IRA as any old blood family would. As their father was nabbed up for rolling with the wrong crowd, it came down to Mickey and Murphy to provide for the family.
Of course all things need to come to an end, as the infection spread it was clear to the brothers that they would not be returning home. Catching wind of what was happening and hopping on the first boat out as stowaways seemed prudent at the time. Well, turns out not so prudent of a decision.........of course, better than staying on the docks.
