Eric Layton was the eldest of three siblings. On weekends when his siblings would watch cartoons, Eric would turn on the QRTS News Channel 8 in his bedroom and take in all that was going on in the world that would be shown on the TV screen. At school, Eric would walk around with a pen and paper document how his classmates and teachers felt that day and their opinions on school and local community events. The girls in his class enjoyed the attention, but every now and then a group of guys from the sports teams would attempt to snatch Eric’s treasured note pad. Eric figured he could connect with the bullies by going to the games and recording stats for the teams that were playing that season and talk “sports” with the guys.

While studying Journalism in college, he met his future girlfriend Sonia, the student bookstore attendant. They became close and upon graduating college moved in together. Eric had a job lined up at the local radio station as a news editor. He spent countless hours refining his research habits and writing skills. The time came when Eric’s wife was going into labor to have their first child. She fell ill in a freak accident and lost too much blood during the birth. She and her unnamed child both died. Eric was devastated. For months he didn’t know what to do with himself except show up for work edit news articles and go home. His coworker Jodi a rough and tough female body builder took Eric to a shooting range as a surprise for Eric’s birthday. He was very hesitant at first, never firing a gun before; but Jodi was able to get Eric in a stable position to get his shots on target.

Throughout the years Eric’s love for journalism had not faded. He wanted to travel and see the world and all of the new fascinating events and locations and separate himself from the place where his girlfriend and unborn child had both died. He had a decent amount of money saved up for a trip and knew he had one uncle in Charnaus who was dying to see him. This would be a great opportunity to get a first hand account on the rumors of an infection that was starting in that part of the world. He got on a plane to Moscow then took a bus to Chenarus. His uncle Nikola had been a bear hunter for the last 40 years. Eric hoped to impress his uncle with what little shooting experience he picked up in the states. Needless to say his uncle Nikola was not impressed. Not one day into Erics visit, Nikola had given Eric a rifle to handle to see if he’d be interested in going hunting. Nikola went to put another log in the oven when the rifle that Eric was inspecting discharged right into Nikola’s back. Eric had unintentionally shot his uncle in the ass. A few days later when Nikola came back from town, Eric noticed Nikola not looking so well. Eric turned to his uncle and saw in his eyes what could only be the infection of legends. Eric without hesitation took his uncles rifle from the door post aiming it at his uncle then firing into his chest. Nikola bled out on the floor in the middle of a hunting cabin with no hospital or phone service for miles. Eric wept. He pondered his life. After several days of eating canned beans and running out of wood, Eric pulled out a shovel and dug his uncles grave. That would be the last time Eric would be so careless with a weapon. He began chopping his own wood, became familiar with the weapon he killed his uncle with and began hunting rabbits and deer, living off the land.
