Son of a railway worker and homemaker, Jiri was born in Chernogorsk's city hospital in 1985. Spent most of his childhood living in Dolina with his parents, after leaving high school he joined his father and worked at the local rail depot before he was called up for his national service in the CDF. Shortly after completing his training, the civil war that would ravage the country broke out and Jiri spent the best part of two years fighting in the Black Mountains with his unit, the 34th (Mountain) Infantry Battalion. When the war came to the end Jiri had risen to the ranks of Sergeant, he had intended on leaving the military after his term of service had ended, but seeing the state his country was in after the war he decided to sign on for several more tours to do his part in rebuilding Chernarus. Years later when the infection gripped the country Novak was by now a Staff Sergeant (Nadrotmistr) and had been patrolling the Chernarus/Russian border with his unit. They were initially ordered to secure the border to prevent potentially infected refugees from escaping the province, but it was soon prove to be a futile objective and Jiri and his men were forced to withdraw and fight for their own survival. Novak has now been on his own for several months and has had little contact with the outside world.
